Cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) was a protective factor in the cardiovascular system. Previous studies showed that hypoxia led to decreased COMP in rat models of pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, the expression pattern of COMP in the PH population was unclear. A total of 35 patients newly diagnosed with PH and 70 controls were enrolled in the study. Circulating COMP concentrations of serum samples were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and were analyzed the association with multiple clinical variables. Serum COMP concentrations in the PH group were significantly declined in comparison with age- and sex-matched normal controls, especially in the female subgroup. No significant difference of COMP concentrations was observed in the etiological classification, heart function classification and risk stratification. Major hemodynamic parameters, six-minute walk distance, N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide and short-term prognosis were not statistically associated with COMP. However, some echocardiography parameters, like tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion and mean right atrial pressure, were found the negative relation to COMP concentrations. In conclusion, serum COMP levels were decreased in the patients with PH, which was in accordance with its known biological effects. Its association with long-term prognosis was worth further exploring.

Peste des petits ruminant (PPR) is an economically important disease of small ruminants with a rapidly expanding geographical distribution. There are fragmented reports to the occurrence and distribution of the disease in Ethiopia. A total of 700 serum samples were collected from goats and sheep to detect the presence of antibody against PPR virus using Competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (C-ELISA). An overall PPR seropositivity was reported to be 48.43% in the area. There is no statistically significant difference in the seroprevalence of the disease between sheep and goats (50.85% and 46.68%), respectively. However, there was statistically significant variation (P<0.05) in the seroprevalence of the disease in young (33.9%) and adult (55.8%) age categories. The seroprevalence in male and female was 42.07% and 50.09%, respectively, where the variation was statistically not significant (P>0.05). High seroprevalence of Peste des petites ruminants in the study area indicated the virus circulation and endemicity of the disease. The disease causes substantial economic losses by affecting the livelihood of the farmers. Therefore, control measures should be put in place to minimize the loss associated with the disease.

Objective To evaluate the utility of entheseal ultrasonography and serum COMP in the preclinical diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis. Methods 60 psoriatic patients were divided into: 30 patients with psoriasis (group I) and 30 patients with psoriatic arthritis as control (group II). They underwent independent clinical and ultrasonographic examination of both lower limbs at the calcaneal insertions of Achilles tendons. Psoriatic arthritis disease activity and severity was assessed by modified DAS28 and Steinbrockers scores. Serum levels of COMP were measured for all patients by ELISA. Results On clinical examination, no entheseal abnormalities were detected in group I while they were present in 23.3% of group II with statistically significant difference between them ( P < 0.001). Ultrasonographic entheseal abnormalities were detected in 33.3% of group I and in 46.7% of group II with no significant difference between them ( P > 0.05). Serum COMP were significantly elevated in group I and II with no statistically significant difference between them (mean ± SD 5.9 ± 3 and 6.8 ± 12 respectively, P > 0.05). Entheseal ultrasound was more specific (67%) while serum COMP was more sensitive (87%) in the preclinical diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis. Serum COMP levels were significantly correlated with CRP in both groups and with DAS28 and Steinbrockers scores in group II ( P < 0.01). Conclusion Entheseal ultrasonography and serum COMP levels may be used complementary to each other for preclinical diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis. Serum COMP seems to be promising prognostic marker for psoriatic arthritis patients.

  Objective: This study was designed is to determine the correlation between serum calcium level and serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) level in Indonesian patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Subjects and Methods: The subjects are patients who visit the rheumatology clinic at a government hospital in Bandung, Indonesia. Serum calcium level was determined by a complexometric method, and the serum COMP level was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Statistical analysis was performed with R software.Results: The serum calcium level was 82.24±44.82 mg/mL in RA patients and 99.04±60.56 mg/mL in normal controls. The serum COMP level was 843.80±35.79 ng/ml in RA patients and 830.00±48.92 ng/ml in normal controls.Conclusion: There is no correlation between serum calcium level and serum COMP levels in RA patients (p=0.967 and rho=0.006).

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to investigate gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum folate-receptor 1 (FOLR1) levels in subjects with different periodontal status. Methods The study consists of three groups: Healthy group (n = 15), gingivitis group (n = 15) and chronic periodontitis group (n = 15). Clinical periodontal parameters including probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival index (GI) and bleeding on probing (BOP) were assessed. GCF and serum samples were collected from each patient and were analyzed FOLR1 levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The values of FOLR1 in GCF were higher in gingivitis and periodontitis groups than among patient in control group (p < 0.016). Serum FOLR1 levels showed no significant difference between the groups. A significant correlation was observed between FOLR1 levels of GCF and BOP (p < 0.05). Conclusions Our preliminary data suggest that FOLR1 is not useful in monitoring the periodontal disease. Further studies are necessary to clarify the role, regulation and function of folate and it’s receptors in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.

Abstract Introduction Preeclampsia (PE) is a multisystem disease affecting 2–8% of all pregnancies. Recently we found that the prevalence of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) in PE patients at 13.9%. APS can be the cause of thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. However, data on heart function and pulmonary pressure in PE and in PE with APS are sparse. Purpose We sought to investigate cardiac hemodynamics in this population. Method Between July 2016 and December 2018, we performed echocardiography in patients who had suffered from PE alone (n=102, age=32.6±4.8 y) or PE with APS (n=21, age=32.1±4.2 y) 3 months after delivery. APS was diagnosed according to the Sapporo criteria. Results The overall prevalence of APS was 17%. Right ventricular to right atrial pressure (RV/RA) gradient was significantly higher in PE + APS patients than in patients who had PE only (21.1±3.8 vs. 17.9±4.6mmHg, p=0.04, PE+APS vs. PE). The indexed volume of the left atrium (LA: 20.3±4.4 vs 23.5±5.5ml/m2, p=0.01, PE+APS vs. PE) and the birthweight of the newborn (1379.8±759.1 vs 1848.1±879.6.1g, p=0.02, PE+APS vs. PE) were lower in APS patients. Conclusion In patients with preeclampsia and APS, three month after delivery, pulmonary artery pressure was higher and the left atrium size smaller than in patients who had PE only. Conceivably this may reflects multiple subclinical clots in the pulmonary vessels in APS patients and may put these patients at an elevated risk of pulmonary hypertension later in life.

Aim. Out study aimed to assess the serum levels of adipokines in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) caused by atherosclerosis.Methods. Serum samples were obtained from 221 patients. One hundred and forty patients, (26 females and 114 males) met the inclusion criteria and were assigned into the case group. Eighty one patients (17 females and 64 males), were included in the control group. Circulating plasma levels of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, and TNF-αwere measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method.Results. Significant lower levels of adiponectin were present () in PAOD patients ( pg/mL) compared to the control group ( pg/mL). The mean value of leptin ( pg/mL) and resistin (2047.81±3301.08 pg/mL) patients included in the PAOD group was higher, as compared to the control group. Statistically significant difference was found between the two groups for leptin () and for resistin (). No statistically significant difference for TNF-αwas found between the two groups ().Conclusion. The markers of inflammation secreted by the adipose tissue (adiponectin, leptin, resistin) showed significant differences in patients from the case group (with PAOD) compared to the control group.

Background Diastolic pressure gradient (DPG) of ≥7 mmHg has been proposed to distinguish mixed pulmonary hypertension from isolated post-capillary pulmonary hypertension in heart failure (HF). We evaluated the changes in pulmonary hemodynamics with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) in patients with DPG of ≥7 or <7 mmHg, and effects on peak oxygen uptake (VO2) in patients with advanced HF. Methods Pre- and post-LVAD implant pulmonary hemodynamics (including right atrial (RA) pressures, DPG, pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), pulmonary capacitance (PCap) and cardiac output), echocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise test were measured in 38 consecutive patients. Results Ten of 38 patients had baseline DPG ≥7 mmHg. There were no significant difference in baseline characteristics, peak VO2 and ventilation slope, but PVR were higher, and PCap lower in patients with DPG ≥7 mmHg. Pulmonary artery pressures improved in all patients, but PVR and DPG remained higher and PCap lower in patients with baseline DPG ≥7 mmHg after a median follow-up of 181 (IQR 153–193) days. Peak VO2 increased and ventilation slope reduced post-LVAD, and these improvements were comparable between groups. Only RA pressure reduction and exercise increase in heart rate were significant predictors of peak VO2 increase on multivariate analysis. Conclusions Baseline DPG of ≥7 mmHg compared to DPG <7 mmHg have persistently lower PCap and higher PVR post-LVAD, but the increase in peak VO2 was comparable despite these residual pulmonary vascular abnormalities. The improvement in peak VO2 was related to reduction in right atrial pressure and exercise increase in heart rate.

Background and Aim: Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is one of the main causes of severe pneumonia, interstitial edema, and emphysema in cattle. The current study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of BRSV in cattle in the Nineveh Province, Iraq. Materials and Methods: Between September 2017 and September 2018, 450 serum samples were collected from non-vaccinated cattle of different ages and breeds for BRSV testing. The epidemiological information of the animals was recorded. The prevalence of the disease was determined using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results: The prevalence of BRSV was 83.11%, and it was significantly (p<0.05) higher in cattle aged greater than 7 months-1.5 years than in older animals; in imported cattle than in Native animals; and in animals originating from large herds (100 animals) than in those from smaller herds (40 animals). There was no significant difference between BRSV prevalence in male and female animals. When samples from different regions of the Nineveh Governorate were compared, the northern region was associated with the highest prevalence of the disease. Samples harvested in the winter displayed the highest BRSV titer, compared to those collected during the other seasons. Conclusion: BRSV is prevalent in cattle from the Nineveh Governorate. Risk factors such as animal age, origin, herd size, and the herd's geographical location are associated with an increased prevalence of the disease in this region. Routine vaccination programs should be adopted to reduce the prevalence of BRSV.

Abstract We describe a measles outbreak in migrant laborers working in a carpet factory in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The outbreak occurred during the nationwide lockdown enforced to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and 2 weeks after the Supplmentary Immunization Activities done for measles elimination. We included all the patients from the factory presenting to Mulpani Primary Health Centre, Kathmandu, Nepal with acute febrile rash illness. Recovered patients with history of fever and rash within the defined outbreak period with a clear epidemiological linkage were also included. Laboratory confirmation was done by detection of immunoglobulin M (IgM) in serum samples against the measles virus via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We compared attack rates (ARs) between those less than 5 years and 5 years or older. We identified 11 case patients ranging from 7 months to 27 years of age (3 below 5years of age); rash onsets were from 28 March-20 April 2020. All case-patients were laborers who had immigrated to Kathmandu from rural parts of the country. We sent serum samples of 7 patients for laboratory confirmation; 5 patients tested positive. The remaining four patients had a clear epidemiological linkage. The average attack rate was 30.5% with no significant difference between attack rates among the <5 years and the ≥5 years reported as 37.5 and 28.5 respectively. Migrant population from rural regions with poor outreach of essential health services like vaccination can act as pockets of measles susceptible individuals if not measles reservoirs. The squalid conditions in which the migrant laborers live-in can also compound the risk of outbreak in such populations. It is prudent to address the vaccination status of such population and timely correct their vaccine status if unvaccinated in order to meet the goal of measles elimination by 2023.

A study was conducted in the Luwero and Nakasongola districts in central Uganda to determine and compare the prevalence and distribution of antibodies against Brucella abortus in cattle under contrasting husbandry practices, using two serological tests. Three hundred and fifteen serum samples were systematically sampled from 29 farms and subsequently tested using the Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) and Indirect Antibody Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (I-ELISA). The overall prevalence of antibodies against Brucella abortus in the Nakasongola and Luwero districts was 2.4% and 4.7% on RBPT, compared with 1.2% and 3.34 % on I-ELISA. There was no significant difference between the results obtained by RBPT and indirect antibody ELISA (p > 0.05). It was noted that antibodies against Brucella abortus were widely spread over different farms regardless of the cattle grazing system (p > 0.05). Based on the findings, it is feasible to use RBPT as a cheaper screening alternative for brucellosis. A comprehensive national brucellosis study should be undertaken to study the epidemiology and prevalence of brucellosis in Uganda.
