A qualitative study was conducted to examine Chinese advertising practitioners’ perception and interpretation of advertising creativity and strategy in the digital age. Twenty three face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data. Findings revealed Chinese advertising practitioners’ definitions of creativity and strategy, perceived criteria of creativity and strategy, perceptions of strategy typology, and how creative person, process, and press shape their perceptions of creativity. Theoretical and practical implications were offered.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer an employer perceptive on the employability of self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) by contrasting SIEs with other identified staffing groups available for the staffing of MNC subsidiaries in China. Design/methodology/approach – This qualitative study is based on in-depth interviews with 24 Westerners with direct staffing responsibilities in subsidiaries of western MNCs located in China. The employability of each identified staffing group was assessed using the person-to-environment fit approach from four-fit perspectives (person-to-job and to-group, organisation and cultural context). Findings – The study revealed how from the employer perspective SIEs do not form a heterogeneous group, but instead there are two groups with different fit profiles. The study illustrates how western SIEs are an uncommon and under-used staffing group in cross-cultural staffing settings in China due to their low employability in comparison to alternative staffing groups. The study also revealed the prevalent bipolarity (the Westerners vs the Chinese) and heterogeneity within the identified staffing groups. Research limitations/implications – The study recognises the lack of employer perspective in SIE literature and also that SIEs are an under-represented group in the staffing literature. Practical implications – The findings help explain how MNC staffing is culturally bound and how the staffing process should incorporate more than just an assessment of job-related qualifications. The findings also help explain the challenges SIEs can experience in cross-cultural career settings. Originality/value – The study is one of the first to provide an employer perspective on SIE careers and contrast SIEs to the other alternative staffing groups available to MNC subsidiaries in China.

Abstract Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) quickly developed into a global pandemic and affected patients’ mental health. However, little is known about psychological experience of patients with COVID-19. The aim was to elucidate the psychological experience of patients with confirmed COVID-19 in Wuhan, at the initial stage of the pandemic. Methods This study was conducted using a phenomenological approach in a qualitative study. Thirteen patients with confirmed COVID-19 from a COVID-19-designated hospital in Wuhan, were recruited between March 15th and April 20th, 2020 via purposive sampling. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted face-to-face. The interview data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results The psychological experience of patients was summarized into three themes: mental distress related to COVID-19, expectations of life scenarios after discharge, and making sense of the experience. These themes were classified into 10 sub-themes. Patients experienced confusion, uncertainty, worry, guilt and concern. Both positive and negative expectations of life scenarios after discharge were reported, manifested as expectations about making up for lost time with family, anxiety about social discrimination and feelings of helplessness about poor financial security. Moreover, patients perceived strength of abundant social support and awareness of social responsibility from their unique experience to cope with their condition. Conclusions This study demonstrated that patients with confirmed COVID-19 in Wuhan underwent complex psychological experience, both positive and negative at the initial stage of the pandemic. These findings will contribute to the delivery of effective mental health care to safeguard patients’ wellbeing.

Transferring the form of face-to-face learning in conventional classes to online learning is not only as simple as changing learning materials into all-digitalization as not all teachers try to make a proper and organized preparation before starting the online teaching process. With the limited time to practice speaking skills at the National Institute of Technology Malang, the teachers are expected to have the right planning and strategies for their classes. Therefore, this paper reports on the the use of ASSURE model in teaching speaking online from the perspective of two English teachers in the National Institute of Technology Malang. This qualitative study relied primarily on in-depth interviews of the two teachers to gather the information. This research’s findings and recommendations are expected to help provide insights in preparing and developing other online speaking classes to achieve better outcomes.

A qualitative study was conducted to explore Chinese advertising practitioners’ perceptions and interpretations of engagement in the digital era. Twenty-three in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data. Findings revealed that Chinese advertising practitioners emphasize interactive experience in defining engagement, which acknowledges multiple dimensions of engagement; they believe that the execution of engagement should emphasize content creation, media selection, and proper interaction; they tend to discuss engagement in a very holistic way, while they consider the effort versus effect dual-approach as an appropriate criterion to measure engagement, confusions, and discrepancies exist surrounding the engagement measurement among Chinese advertising practitioners. The current study offers insightful implications for the conceptualization of engagement in different cultural contexts as well as on how to bridge the perceptional gap between academia and industry regarding the execution of engagement.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses who served as frontline healthcare providers are experiencing issues with extreme workload demand and under-provision of protective resources. This study aims to understand nurse readiness for the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The study uses a qualitative phenomenology approach with purposive sampling. Participants were recruited from the regional hospital in East Java, Indonesia. The criteria of participants were nurses who worked face-to-face with Covid-19 patients from various wards. The total sample size is 20 participants. In-depth interviews were conducted to gather the data, which was analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. Five themes emerged: (1) fear of getting infected; (2) PPE adequacy supply; (3) unclear patient distribution flow; (4) nurse supporting ecosystem; (5) education and training in infectious diseases. The evaluation of nurses’ readiness concerned their knowledge, the supply of safety equipment, and support from various ecosystems. Nurses were concerned about various elements including catching the disease themselves, adjusting to the environment and new work procedures, physical discomfort due to special protective equipment, witnessing the suffering and death of patients, and long-term separation from family members. They need an integrated support system to help them fighting Covid-19. Attention from fellow nurses who help each other in crises, family support, and institution support are the support systems that determine the readiness of nurses.   Keywords: covid-19, nurse readiness, pandemic, qualitative study

ObjectivesTo explore care experiences in multidisciplinary primary healthcare centres from the patients, carers and healthcare professionals perspectives.DesignThis qualitative study used face-to-face, in-depth interviews and focus groups. Patients with multimorbidity monitored by a General Practitioner (GP) and another professional from the health centre were recruited through purposive sampling and included with their carer. They were interviewed together while professionals were interviewed separately. Verbatims were coded with subsequent blind analysis, using an inductive approach, to find aspects and features. The constant comparative method highlighted data consistencies and variations.ParticipantsTwenty-six patients, 23 family carers and 57 healthcare professionals.SettingFive multidisciplinary primary healthcare centres, in France, between March 2017 and December 2018.ResultsThis unique study grouped perspectives into nine core quality of primary care aspects: having accessible, available, and varied care; feeling welcome and enjoying comfortable, well-equipped, and clean premises; having quality medicotechnical care (medical knowledge and technical skills); having a reliable GP; receiving appropriate care from healthcare professionals other than the GP; maintaining an efficient relationship with healthcare professionals; benefiting from organised and coordinated care; being an informed, supported and involved patient; having an informed, supported and involved carer. New areas of interest include the multidisciplinary nature of the centres, appreciation of other professionals within the centre, medicotechnical dimensions of care and the carer’s role in maintaining patient autonomy.ConclusionsThis is the first study to interview patients and carers alongside healthcare professionals. This enhanced knowledge improves understanding of these aspects and can guide implementation of evaluation tools that truly reflect patient and carer needs and enable an efficient experience in terms of quality. To address deficiencies in existing questionnaires, the new perspectives found will be added to former aspects to create a comprehensive quality of primary care evaluation tool.Trial registration numberNCT02934711, Results.

The number of female drug users has been on the rise in South Africa, with statistics reflecting a rise in the number of women who attend treatment centres annually. This article presents empirical data from a broader qualitative study which aimed to explore perceptions concerning the effectiveness of aftercare programmes for female recovering drug users. The main data source was transcripts of in-depth interviews and focus groups with both service users and service providers from a designated rehabilitation centre in Gauteng, South Africa. Framed within a biopsychosocial-spiritual model, this article explores the perceptions and meanings which the female recovering drug users and the service providers attach to aftercare programmes. The findings of the research outlined the range of factors promoting recovery, alongside noteworthy suggestions for improvement in aftercare services. While acknowledging multiple influences on behaviour, this article highlights the significance of these findings in planning and implementing holistic aftercare programmes.

As soon as decision makers are expected to make differences towards sustainable future, young adults’ ability to make informed and sound decisions is considered essential towards securing our planet. This study provides an insight into young adults’ knowledge of key environment and sustainability issues. To answer the key research questions, data were obtained using a qualitative phenomenographic research approach and collected through 18 face-to-face in-depth interviews with research participants. The findings of this study suggest that young adults lived experiences that play a huge role in their level of awareness of topical environmental and sustainability issues critical to humanity’s future on earth.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand in-depth how consumers create value in their lives using WhatsApp, the leading mobile instant messaging (MIM) application. Design/methodology/approach The study adopts the perspective of customer-dominant logic (CDL) and uses a qualitative multimethod design involving 3 focus groups and 25 subsequent in-depth interviews. The research setting was Ecuador, a Latin American country. Findings Analysis and interpretation of the participants’ stories made it possible to identify and understand the creation of four types of value: maintaining and strengthening relationships; improving role performance; emotional support; and entertainment and fun. In addition, the present study proposes a conceptual model of consumer value creation as it applies to MIM. Practical implications Understanding the way consumers create value in their lives using MIM is important not only for organizations that offer MIM applications, but also for those companies that develop other applications for mobile phones or for those who wish to use MIM as an electronic word-of-mouth vehicle. Originality/value The current study is one of the first to address the topic of consumer behavior in the use of technologies from the perspective of CDL; this perspective enables an integrated qualitative vision of value creation in which the consumer is the protagonist.

Purpose Dave Snowden has been an important voice in knowledge management over the years. As the founder and chief scientific officer of Cognitive Edge, a company focused on the development of the theory and practice of social complexity, he offers informative views on the relationship between big data/analytics and KM. Design/methodology/approach A face-to-face interview was held with Dave Snowden in May 2015 in Auckland, New Zealand. Findings According to Snowden, analytics in the form of algorithms are imperfect and can only to a small extent capture the reasoning and analytical capabilities of people. For this reason, while big data/analytics can be useful, they are limited and must be used in conjunction with human knowledge and reasoning. Practical implications Snowden offers his views on big data/analytics and how they can be used effectively in real world situations in combination with human reasoning and input, for example in fields from resource management to individual health care. Originality/value Snowden is an innovative thinker. He combines knowledge and experience from many fields and offers original views and understanding of big data/analytics, knowledge and management.
