Seeing no net loss: Making nature offset-able

Policies for biodiversity no net loss and net gain underwrite narratives for green growth through advancing reparative logics to ongoing habitat impacts. By enabling offsetting practices that risk accommodating rather than averting land change developments, net principles are said to resemble modes of ‘accumulation by environmental restoration’. Biodiversity net principles are frequently depicted visually as a diagram of the mitigation hierarchy for communicational ease and have proliferated over recent decades despite little evidence for their ecological effectiveness. This paper combines economic sociology, visual media analysis of the net diagram and political ecology to account for the stabilisation of net principles in policy frameworks. It highlights the upstream imaginative work that this visual tool and its wider assemblages perform to support offsetting and habitat banking practices on the ground. The paper positions the NNL diagram as a conceptual and ideational technology. It traces the practices through which biodiversity is rationalised by the Cartesian coordinates of an XY schematic, and en-framed as a measure of numerical value on a vertical scale. The effect is to engender coherence to the idea of netting out differences in aggregate sums of biodiversity unit value, making nature conceptually offset-able. I develop this account through a history of the diagram as well as the broader processes that have shaped the policy and its arrival in English planning frameworks. Observers increasingly question how biodiversity offsetting and no net loss/ net gain have become so popular when their empirical foundations are so weak. This paper proposes that within the wider assemblages of actors, one answer is located in the potency and mobility of conceptual technologies such as diagrams of no net loss or net gain of biodiversity and the logic of balance-sheet accounting that is imbricated within the visual design.

Biodiversity offsets are applied in many countries to compensate for impacts on the environment, but research on regulatory frameworks and implementation enabling effective offsets is lacking. This paper reviews research on biodiversity offsets, providing a framework for the analysis of program design (no net loss goal, uncertainty and ratios, equivalence and accounting, site selection, landscape-scale mitigation planning, timing) and implementation (compliance, adherence to the mitigation hierarchy, leakage and trade-offs, oversight, transparency and monitoring). Some more challenging aspects concern the proper metrics and accounting allowing for program evaluation, as well as the consideration of trade-offs when regulations focus only on the biodiversity aspect of ecosystems. Results can be used to assess offsets anywhere and support the creation of programs that balance development and conservation.

Through considering a "Geo Archive" as a tool of history, this paper explores several conundrums concerning environmental migration in social sciences. It demonstrates how historical perspectives can problematize and unsettle various automatisms that are widely present in journalistic, public, and policy discourses. Through examples from the Geo Archive, the article illustrates how unavoidable historical dimensions can enrich our understandings on the interaction between environmental issues and migration flows. This paper engages with an open access "archive in-the-making". This Geo Archive includes case studies of migration flows and puts those flows in conversation with environmental transformations and climatic changes. The analysed collection presents high-profile stories which are representative samples of different approaches, temporalities, geographies, sources of information, narratives, and scales. This endeavour encompasses different disciplines and fields of expertise: environmental humanities, IT and communication experts, and political ecology. The archive places itself within the realms of public history, environmental history, and history of the present and aims to reach out to wider audiences. This digital humanities project stemmed from a support action funded by the EU initiative Horizon 2020 titled CLISEL whose overarching goal was to analyse and better inform institutional responses and policies addressing climate refugees and migrants.

This project is intended to teach students to apply the material covered in their first graduate accounting course. This is accomplished by applying the material to an actual company selected by each team. The project is described as follows: The project includes a computerized spreadsheet preparation of a master budget forecast for an actual publicly traded company for one year into the future. . The dates depend upon when the annual reports are prepared for your company. The forecast begins the day following the last available published annual report. The forecast does not comprise any actual numbers regardless of when the actual annual or quarterly statements are prepared for the company selected. The actual balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flow from the preceding year are included with the forecasted balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flow. The company must have a physical inventory, and accounts receivable from sales. The company may not be one in which any team member(s) are employed. The forecast will include the following items:1. Introduction, including the history of the company and a description of the company plan and policies as given in the project2. Sales budget (twelve months).3. Schedule of purchases (twelve months).4. Schedule of collection of credit sales (accounts receivable) and cash sales (twelve months).5. Cash budget (twelve months).6. An Income statement (for the current year and the projected year).7. A Balance sheet (for the current year and the projected year).8. A Statement of cash flow (for the current year and the projected year).9. Cost-profit-volume analysis (twelve months).10. Conclusion and recommendations

The goal of the present study is to demonstrate the media-aesthetic potential of infographic messages on particular cases. This can be done due to an integrated approach to the analysis of the visual content of media content. That indicates the case study method implementation as well as description and generalization. The theoretical basis of the research is represented by scientific studies of various directions. That includes the history of media and visual media culture; features of the concepts of media culture and media language, media aesthetics; infographics as a tool of media language. The empirical basis of the study is journalistic materials containing infographic content of such publications as by RIA Novosti (ria.ru), TASS (tass.ru). The examples of visual image implementation in the transmission of information — media content containing infographics — are given and analyzed. Considering media aesthetics as the formation of a sensory perception of the proposed media content, the author turns to the philosophical and aesthetic foundations of visual practices in the media and post-humanistic trends in journalism. As a result of the analysis of the theoretical and practical basis of the research, the author comes to the conclusion that today the role of the media aesthetic component of messages is most relevant. And infographics, as the connecting link of language and consciousness, is its most striking tool.

Abstract Background: Despite increasing evidence impulsive traits play a role in bulimia nervosa, the latest version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders does not include impulsivity as part of the criteria for this eating disorder. Method:Using Q sort, a methodology specifically well suited to the expression of individual viewpoints, twenty-six undergraduate women split into two categories - women with bulimia nervosa; women without bulimia nervosa - ranked a total of forty-four statements that were reflective of impulsivity. These statements were derived from a multitude of sources to ensure proper representativeness: academic literature, the popular press, various audio-visual media outlets, focus groups and social media sites. Results:A factor analysis was performed that generated two distinct factors that essentially split participants along the lines of a presence or absence of bulimia nervosa. Factor A, called Thinking Through, was characterized by a methodical and carefully processed approach around decision-making, thinking through consequences of actions, and a general tendency towards planning and organization. With the exception of one participant, this factor was represented by participants with no history of bulimia nervosa thus indicating individuals with this eating disorder did not endorse this factor. Factor B, called Negative Urgency and Obsessive Thinking, was characterized by an urge for pleasure-seeking, quick action, a lack of self-control and difficulty postponing reward. Endorsers of this factor often regret decisions made rashly yet tend to repeat actions that feel urgent, despite negative consequences. This factor, with the exception of one participant, consisted of individuals with a history of bulimia nervosa. Conclusion:Such finding provides additional evidence for a pattern of impulsivity in women with bulimia nervosa that is not found in their healthy counterparts. In addition, it provides clinicians treating this disorder a guidepost for a more targeted treatment of bulimia and further enhances the need for impulsivity to be included as one of its diagnostic criteria.

This chapter examines the history of Southern Gothic through three recent media whose original visual imaginary delineates gothic aberrance. In the broad reach of visual media the Southern Gothic finds its most potent images and narratives. The film Trash Humpers (2009) demonstrates how the Southern Gothic story could not be told anywhere else; the TV series True Blood (2008-14) emphasizes sexuality and difference via its contemporary take on the regional genre; and the film Black Snake Moan (2006) ties these threads together through its long-standing gothic narrative of racial and sexual mores.

This chapter discusses the power of the medium of comics to shed light on discussions of race, racism, and the act of passing. Glaser moves from a close reading of Mat Johnson and Warren Pleece’s recent neo-passing narrative, the graphic novel Incognegro (2008), to a wider look at the history of visual media in representing racial violence during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This chapter makes the argument that comics provide an arena for thinking both about how we see and interpret race and how visual depictions of racial violence—from photographs of lynchings to recordings of police shootings of unarmed African American men—force us to grapple with complex ethical questions.
