Abstract Background Essential to the professional development of mentors is making explicit and critically challenging the knowledge and beliefs underpinning their mentoring practice. This paper reports on the development of a survey instrument called MERIT, MEntor Reflection InstrumenT, which was designed to support mentors’ systematic reflection on the how, what and why of their practice. Methods In 2019, a twenty-item survey instrument was developed and piloted. Initial validation data (N = 228) were collected by distributing the survey through the authors’ network. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted and internal consistency reliability coefficients were calculated. Results The Principal Axis EFA with Direct Oblimin rotation (Delta = 0) resulted in four factors: 1) supporting personal development, 2) modelling professional development, 3) fostering autonomy, and 4) monitoring performance. The four factors explained 43% of the total variance of item scores. The Cronbach’s alphas for the subscale scores were between .42 and .75. Conclusions The MERIT can help mentors reflect on their beliefs and professional knowhow. These reflections can serve as input for the faculty development initiatives mentors undertake, which may ultimately improve their knowledge and skills as a mentor.

The current research investigates the HEC based training for the University teachers in Pakistan and its impact on the performance on University teachers. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan seeks to improve the quality of teaching by University teachers. The Commission has initiated different forms of training according to the areas of expertise in order to improve skills and impact on the performance of University teachers. HEC based training plays a crucial role in the personal development among the University Teachers in Pakistan. Survey was conducted from 200 University teachers who have recently got training from HEC skill development or professional development training from HEC from all provinces. Structural questionnaire was design for reliability and accuracy the data. Analysis and evaluation was done by using GENSTAT statistical software. Major findings of the study showed that training should be provided according to discipline and more interactive training should be design for the University teachers. It was revealed that HEC based training not only equipped with knowledge but also improving the confidence level of the University teacher. Moreover due to the government policies, rules and regulations, such as introduction of the Tenure Track System, the and hiring the foreign faculty in various all Public sector universities it also has impact on the performance of students in job market. It revealed that teacher training was beneficial for professional development as well as for teaching performance. It also suggested that improved knowledge, skills and attitudes was necessary for the teacher aides to support the teaching program and facilitate learning and communication. It was further revealed that effective teacher aides required competencies in broad areas of human relations, instructional activities, non-instructional activities, and basic skills. The study concluded that basic and advanced level training is necessary for future training programs in Pakistan and 190 respondents responded to the questionnaires, by producing 95.0% response rate. Among which 70 % were male respondents and 30% were female respondents

The article presents the results of the intermediate stage of the research conducted within the framework of the project of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research No. 19-29-14030 ”Cognitive models and algorithms for the formation of digital competence of a teacher in the conditions of digitalization of general education”. The project is aimed at improving the effectiveness of the teacher’s activities in the context of digitalization of education by developing the digital competence of the teacher through the introduction of cognitive models and algorithms for evaluating the digital competencies of teachers and making decisions on the design or adjustment of professional development programs. The current state of the problem of professional and personal development of teachers in the context of digitalization of education, their digital competence, approaches to the identification of digital competencies and their assessment is studied, conceptual approaches to the identification of digital competencies of teachers are defined and the main indicators of their assessment are developed. At the second stage (2021), a structural model of the organization of professional development of teachers is being developed, taking into account the requirements of digitalization of general education on the basis of a competence-based approach. There is also the task of developing a cognitive model of the advanced training program (ATP), which allows us to take into account the strength of the links between the studied modules and digital competencies based on the application of an algorithm for assessing the significance of disciplines. The results of this work are proposed for discussion in this article.

This paper explains that FMEA analysis of students social and professional competence may become an essential component of psychological and pedagogical monitoring, and shows its performance as related to social and pedagogical follow-up of personal and professional development. It is proved that FMEA analysis allows to determine critical points of students social and professional competence development, i.e. to identify, diagnose and forecast the risks of his or her personal and professional development. The relationship between the FMEA analysis of social and professional competence and other components of psychological and pedagogical monitoring is detected (including SWOT analysis of competences and personal and professional qualities). The theoretical relevance of the research results is in the possibility of further scientific reasoning for the issue of personal development in the system of ongoing education, while the practical relevance is in the possibility of the development of innovative systems and techniques for psychological and pedagogical monitoring.

The study sought the perceptions of university academics on the use of IT tools for the formative assessment (FA) of students’ learning outcomes. This study adopted a quantitative research approach and descriptive survey research design using a sample of 180 university academics. Academics’ perception questionnaire was used for data collection. The instrument with two clusters was properly validated, and its internal consistency reliability indies found to be 0.79 and 0.85 for clusters A and B using the Cronbach alpha method. The obtained data were analysed using mean and t-test of independent samples. The results revealed that university academics perceived the use of information technology tools as veritable tools for effective implementation of FA. Further analysis revealed that the perceptions of the academics differed significantly by gender and qualification. IT tools are indispensable in the effective implementation of formative assessment practices in institutions of higher learning. This finding implies that quality assessment can be achieved using IT tools, but there is a need for professional development of the lecturers. It was therefore recommended that efforts should be made by the Nigerian Education stakeholders in making adequate provisions for the effective implementation of quality assessment using IT tools.

The article addresses what seems to be the critical aspects related to the most important competence of a human being in the 21st century – the competence to manage oneself. Nowadays, when life and civilization and technological development have accelerated unbelievably, people find it increasingly challenging to fulfill the social roles entrusted to them. That applies to everyone, but especially to those who have to manage (lead) other people or even entire teams, often forgetting about themselves, their needs, life priorities, and personal development. One should be able to wisely and rationally plan professional development in his/her personal life so as not to lose himself/herself entirely in the surrounding reality, being absorbed only in professional matters and others’ problems. This article indicates the most critical aspects that should be taken into account when planning personal and socio-professional development since only in this way can one feel the fulfillment of both in personal (family) and social and professional life.

The aim of the study was to find out the perception of teachers towards enhancing their professional and human developments through mentoring using Owerri Educational zone. The result of the study would be significant as it would provide a basis for incorporating the mentoring system into teachers' development programmes. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study. A simple random sampling technique with non-replacement balloting was used to sample hundred (900) teachers in the area of study. Data for the study were collected using a structured questionnaire relating to the topic and analysed with simple percentages The result of the analysis showed those primary school teachers were not aware of the benefits of enhancing their profession and personal development through mentoring. Teachers in the area of study had a negative perception towards enhancing their personal and professional development through mentoring by years of experience. The levels o f education, sex are not determining factors in the teacher's perception o f their professional development through mentoring. Based on the result some recommendations were made which include a review of the current development programmes of teachers to incorporate the mentoring system, and team teaching should be encouraged to facilitate networking and sharing of best practices among teachers among others.

The effectiveness of penitentiary activities, assuming the authoritarianism of the management system, is largely determined by the individual and personal characteristics of unit heads of the penal system, who need to show their managerial abilities as fully as possible, but not every leader has a sufficient amount of such abilities. If he/she does, he/she cannot always demonstrate them to the fullest extent. In this case, there can be serious miscalculations, leading to certain socio-psychological and criminological consequences. Among them, the instability of the socio-psychological climate in a team, provoking a high employee turnover, which does not allow forming the key personnel of a unit, as well as a high risk that subordinate employees, projecting the style, manner of communication and affects of the management, begin to show socially disapproving and even self-destructive forms of behavior, such as various forms of aggression towards oneself and others, neglect of safety requirements at work and in everyday life, unlawful actions against convicts, etc. One of the most important factors in the prevention of these phenomena is the system of work with a personnel reserve for managerial positions. The arsenal of diagnostic tools for the study of 65 employees working in the penal system, who are middle managers in the personnel reserve, included a set of methods: a) analysis of documents; b) expert assessment of the employee’s personality; c) psychological testing, which allows obtaining a generalized psychological profile of a personality according to the estimates of five “traits of an adequate personality”, motivators of socio-psychological activity, the style of behavior self-regulation, levels of legal consciousness and faith in people, as well as self-assessment of professional development opportunities and career prospects. The generalized characteristics of the respondents show that 88% of them meet the requirements for penitentiary activities. The respondents have an average level of emotional intelligence development with a tendency to lower; their style of behavior self-regulation is accentuated due to their relatively poorly developed independence; 95% of respondents have a high and medium level of legal consciousness development; 70% of them are distinguished by their distrust of people; the leading motivator of their socio-psychological activity is success achievement. All surveyed employees see opportunities for their professional development, although about 30% of them have concerns about promotion opportunities in this system. Based on the results obtained, the resources of success and the four most important areas of work with the personnel reserve were identified.

The purpose of this study is to investigate computing professionals’ perspectives on services offered by a professional association. A conceptual framework was developed based on a review of relevant literatures to explore the motivations of professionals to join and maintain professional association membership. A survey instrument was developed based on the conceptual framework, and was subsequently deployed within the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). The analyses (N = 220) include descriptive analyses, exploratory factor analysis, and internal consistency reliability analyses. The results suggest that members’ needs and motivations are multidimensional, involving ten distinct and internally consistent underlying constructs. This paper contributes by providing a reliable measurement system for computing professional association leadership to make informed decisions and provides substantive recommendations for offering targeted services. The findings suggest that important aspects of computing professional membership are networking with local professionals, professional development programs, and promoting their concerns.

In April 2001 the College introduced personal development plans (PDPs) as the mechanism for achieving continuing professional development (CPD) objectives. We moved from an individual, retrospective points counting exercise to a prospective peer-group based activity centring on individuals' learning objectives (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2001). The current CPD policy is due for review in 2005. It is largely in line with General Medical Council guidance, Continuing Professional Development (April 2004) and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, CPD: The Ten Principles. A Framework for Continuing Professional Development (February 2002), and major revision will not be necessary. Two significant changes will be incorporated in the new policy. The first is an audit procedure whereby a random 5% of returns will be subject to further scrutiny. This is a process audit and necessary for the quality assurance of the system as a whole (Bouch & Jackson, 2004). The second will allow us to complete up to 10 h of our 50-h minimum requirement for attending meetings, by engaging in online CPD activities.

Abstract Objectives The purpose of this exploratory study was to develop a survey to estimate college students’ attitudes towards dietary protein. This analysis explored the dimensionality of the attitude constructs in the Dietary Protein Assessment Survey Instrument. Methods The survey consisted of 64 questions, including 8 demographic questions, 24 knowledge questions, 14 attitude questions, and 18 behavior questions. The attitude questions included a 5-point Likert scale ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree” with a neutral midpoint. The dimensionality of the attitude constructs was explored by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using principal axis factoring and a promax rotation. Internal consistency reliability was examined using Cronbach's alpha. Results Two hundred twenty-five subjects (91.1% female) provided responses; mean age was 27.8 + 11.7y. After removing items that did not factor, the EFA retained three factors which explained 70.2% of the variance. Factor 1 consisted of 6 items, factor 2 and 3 consisted of 2 items each. Factor 1 included 6 items related to animal versus plant sources and their relationship with human and environmental health; factor 2 included 2 items pertaining to the healthfulness of organic protein sources; and factor 2 included 2 items describing the adequacy of the RDA for protein with respect to weight loss and adherence to a vegetarian diet. Factor 1 shared a moderate, positive relationship with factor 2 (r = 0.48) and a weak, inverse relationship with factor 3 (r = −0.33). Factor 2 shared a weak, inverse relationship with factor 3 (r = −0.30). The Kaiser-Meyer-Oklin test (0.817) and Bartlett's test of sphericity (P < 0.001) indicated that the data were appropriate for EFA. There was no evidence of multicollinearity (determinant = 0.01). Conclusions Attitudes towards protein appear to be multi-dimensional and correlated. Further testing is needed to confirm the hypothesized 3-factor model and to estimate test-retest reliability of this survey. Funding Sources Dymatize.
