AbstractThe adsorption process of the industrialized dye Isolan Dark Blue 2SGL-01 (IDB) onto (Mg-Zn)/(Al-Fe)-(CO3)/Cl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) coded LDH21 and LDH22 and its calcined products CLDHs (CLDH21 and CLDH22), respectively, was investigated. The characterization of LDHs and CLDHs before and after loading with IDB by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope and surface area measurements showed a typical hydrotalcite structure and confirmed the loading of IDB. The adsorption parameters; initial pH, shaking time, adsorbent dose, initial concentration of IDB dye and temperature were studied. The optimum conditions for IDB adsorption were pH 4.3 and shaking time 3 h. A complete removal of IDB (> 99%) was achieved using a dosage of 2.0 g L− 1 CLDHs or LDH22, and 3.0 g L− 1 of LDH21. The adsorption processes were suggested to be best described by the pseudo-second order kinetics and Langmuir-type adsorption isotherm with monolayer capacities of 75, 91, 427 and 530 mg g− 1, onto LDH21, LDH22, CLDH21 and CLDH22, respectively. The loaded IDB was recovered from LDHs and CLDHs adsorbent using Na2CO3. CLDH22 showed best adsorption capacity of 530 mg g− 1. Its adsorption thermodynamic parameters ∆Gadsorption, ∆Hadsorption and ∆Sadsorption indicated that the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic in nature. CLDH22 was successfully applied for the removal of IDB from simulated dyeing process with removal efficiency 97%.

In this work, two synthetic layered double hydroxides (LDH) consists of Zn2+ as M2+ cation with different M3+ cation, i.e., Al3+ and Cr3+ were used as an adsorbent for Congo Red removal aqueous solution. Both Zn-Al and Zn-Cr LDH were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and BET surface area analyzer. The effect of contact time, initial dye concentration, and temperature were evaluated in a batch technique in order to investigate the characteristic of Congo Red adsorption onto both adsorbents. The experimental data were assessed according to the parameter of adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics. The results of LDH characterization showed that Zn-Al LDH has a higher interlayer distance than Zn-Cr LDH, although Zn-Cr LDH has a higher surface area. The FT-IR analysis indicated the interlayer space of both Zn-Cr and Zn-Al LDH was dominated by CO32- as the interlayer anion species. The adsorption kinetics study of Congo Red on both LDH revealed that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. For the adsorption isotherm, the experimental data fit well with the Freundlich model rather than the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process that occurred on both adsorbents was spontaneous with exothermic nature.

Abstract Ly @ FeZn layered double hydroxides (LDHs) controllable fabrication based on Box-Behnken Design (BBD) model was fabricated, and presented stable and efficient removal performance for Ciprofloxacin (CIP), Norfloxacin (NOR) and Ofloxacin (OFL) removal. It should be noted that Ly @ FeZn had different adsorption behavior towards CIP, NOR and OFL. Furthermore, the Ly @ FeZn was characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. Results revealed the optimized fabrication condition (temperature of 60 °C, Fe / Zn molar ratio of 0.5 and the lysine dosage of 5.8 mmol) for the removing efficient. The highest adsorption capacity of CIP, NOR and OFL were 193.83, 190.20 and 62.12 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption kinetics of both CIP and NOR were well simulated with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, while that of OFL was well-described by the pseudo-second-order. Moreover, the adsorption thermodynamics of CIP and NOR on Ly @ FeZn indicated that the adsorption processes were exothermal, feasible and spontaneous. It was worth noting that the adsorption mechanism of Ly @ FeZn for CIP and NOR were the synergistic reaction of electrostatic attraction, chemical bonding and flocculation. On the other side, the adsorption behavior of OFL was relatively low, and the adsorption mechanism was only electrostatic attraction.

A novel natural honey hydrothermal biochar (HHTB) was prepared using natural honey as raw material. The as-prepared adsorbent was applied to adsorb Pb2+ from aqueous solution and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the structure and morphology change of the adsorbent before and after Pb2+ adsorption. The influence of the pH, initial Pb2+ concentration, temperature, and contact time on the adsorption of Pb2+ was systematically investigated. The results revealed that the adsorption capacity for Pb2+ is up to 133.2 mg·g−1 at initial pH of 5.0 and adsorption temperature of 298 K. Meanwhile, the adsorption of Pb2+ on HHTB can be well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorbent had great selectivity for Pb2+ from the aqueous solution containing coexisting ions including Cd2+, Co2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+. Furthermore, the adsorption of Pb2+ on HHTB was attributed to complexation coordination, where it involved hydroxyl and carboxylic groups on HHTB in the process of adsorption of Pb2+.

This study describes the behavior of potential slow-release fertilizers (SRF), prepared by the mechanochemical activation of calcined Mg2Al-CO3 or Mg2Fe-CO3 layered double hydroxides (LDH) mixed with dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (K2HPO4). The effects of LDH thermal treatment on P/K release behavior were investigated. Characterizations of the inorganic composites before and after release experiments combined X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The best release profile (<75% in 28 days and at least 75% release) was obtained for MgAl/K2HPO4 (9 h milling, 2:1 molar ratio, MR). Compared to readily used K2HPO4, milling orthophosphate into LDH matrices decreases its solubility and slows down its release, with 60% and 5.4% release after 168 h for MgAl/K2HPO4 and MgFe/K2HPO4 composites, respectively. Mechanochemical addition of carboxymethylcellulose to the LDH/K2HPO4 composites leads to a noticeable improvement of P release properties.

Zn/Al and Zn/Fe layered double hydroxides has successfully synthesized by co-precipitation methods with molar ration 3:1. The samples were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Surface Area using BET method. In this study, Zn/Al and Zn/Fe layered double hydroxides were used to remove direct yellow dye in aqueous solution. The experiments were carried out time variations with the aim of observing the kinetic studies. The results showed that the adsorption of direct yellow onto Zn/Al and Zn/Fe layered double hydroxides based on co-efficient correlation kinetic models more fit using pseudo-second-order than pseudo-first-order.

Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) adsorbent was synthesized in situ on γ-Al2O3 for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy and thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. Compared to the LDHs powder, the calcined LDHs sorbent prepared in situ on γ-Al2O3 had higher specific surface area and was easy to recover and reuse. The adsorptive capacity for removing Cr(VI) from aqueous solution was resulting from the memory effect of LDHs based on the XRD results. Both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model fit the experimental data well. Furthermore, the adsorbent exhibits excellent sorption–regeneration performances.

Natural organic matter such as guar and humus are recalcitrant to conventional pretreatment technologies and can potentially foul processes such as membranes during water treatment. An innovative method of using synthetic layered double hydroxides (LDH) was investigated for removing common natural organic matter in the form of guar gum (GG) and humic acid (HA) from water. Adsorption isotherms were evaluated with Langmuir and Freundlich models. Results show the affinity of GG and HA to LDH to be 11.31 and 9.33 mg g−1 LDH, respectively. Kinetic isotherms indicate that the sorbing rates of LDH to GG and HA increase with initial GG and HA concentrations, fitting a pseudo-second order model. This study demonstrate that LDH may be an effective material in removing GG and HA from waters and offer an alternative to conventional pretreatment technologies for the mitigation fouling of membrane and other systems in water treatment.

Cedar sawdust (Cedrus deodara), an agricultural by-product abundant in China, was used as an adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The extent of adsorption was investigated as a function of pH, contact time, adsorbate concentration and reaction temperature. The Cu(II) removal was pH-dependent, reaching a maximum at pH 5. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and equilibrium was reached at 60 min. The rate constantly increased with the increase of temperature, indicating the endothermic nature of adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of Cu(II) determined from the Langmuir equation was 64.52 mg/g at 25°C. The equilibrium data fitted very well to the Freundlich isotherm model as compared to the Langmuir isotherm. The negative ΔGo values at various temperatures confirm that the adsorption processes are spontaneous. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis of cedar sawdust, before and after adsorption of Cu(II), suggested that the main mechanisms involved in the removal of Cu(II) might be the ionic exchange and complexation.
