Abstract The paper analyses the geological conditions of study area, rock mass strength parameters with suitable support structure propositions for the under construction Nahakki tunnel in Mohmand Agency. Geology of study area varies from mica schist to graphitic marble/phyllite to schist. The tunnel ground is classified and divided by the empisical classification systems like Rock mass rating (RMR), Q system (Q), and Geological strength index (GSI). Tunnel support measures are selected based on RMR and Q classification systems. Computer based finite element analysis (FEM) has given yet another dimension to design approach. FEM software Phase2 version 7.017 is used to calculate and compare deformations and stress concentrations around the tunnel, analyze interaction of support systems with excavated rock masses and verify and check the validity of empirically determined excavation and support systems.

Research on the classification of rock mass quality in the intake tunnel Jlantah dam has not been carried out in detail because the research focuses on the location of the main dam so that empirical excavation methods and support systems have not been carried out. The rock mass quality will be used as a parameter in determining the excavation method and tunnel support system that will be used in the Jlantah Dam intake tunnel. The investigation was carried out through engineering geological mapping, core drill evaluation, and supported by laboratory test data based on the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Q-system rock mass classification. The rock mass at the research location based on the RMR classification is in class IV (poor rock). Based on the Q-system method, a very poor rock class is obtained. Based on the analysis of the RMR and Q-system methods, the suitable support system for engineering geological conditions such as the intake tunnel of the Jlantah Dam is shotcrete 10 cm thick, steel set with a distance of 1.5 m and rockbolt length of 1.6 m with a distance of 1.5 m. The proper excavation method for the tunnel intake is top heading and bench.

AbstractDesigning a suitable support system is of great importance in longwall mining to ensure the safe and stable working conditions over the entire life of the mine. In high-speed mechanized longwall mining, the most vulnerable zones to failure are roof strata in the vicinity of the tailgate roadway and T-junctions. Severe roof displacements are occurred in the tailgate roadway due to the high-stress concentrations around the exposed roof span. In this respect, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize tailgate support systems in the Tabas longwall coal mine, northeast of Iran. The nine geomechanical parameters were obtained through the field and laboratory studies including density, uniaxial compressive strength, angle of internal friction, cohesion, shear strength, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, slake durability index, and rock mass rating. A design of experiment was developed through considering a Central Composite Design (CCD) on the independent variables. The 149 experiments are resulted based on the output of CCD, and were introduced to a software package of finite difference numerical method to calculate the maximum roof displacements (dmax) in each experiment as the response of design. Therefore, the geomechanical variables are merged and consolidated into a modified quadratic equation for prediction of the dmax. The proposed model was executed in four approaches of linear, two-factor interaction, quadratic, and cubic. The best squared correlation coefficient was obtained as 0.96. The prediction capability of the model was examined by testing on some unseen real data that were monitored at the mine. The proposed model appears to give a high goodness of fit with the accuracy of 0.90. These results indicate the accuracy and reliability of the developed model, which may be considered as a reliable tool for optimizing or redesigning the support systems in longwall tailgates. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to identify the key variables affecting the dmax, and to recognize their pairwise interaction effects. The key parameters influencing the dmax are respectively found to be slake durability index, Young’s modulus, uniaxial compressive strength, and rock mass rating.

In order to study the deformation mechanism of soft rock roadway in underground mines, it is necessary not only to study the influence of the dynamic disturbance caused by the cyclic mining blasting vibration on the stability of the soft rock roadway but also to study the degradation of the roadway surrounding rock itself and other factors. The paper presented a synthetic research system to investigate the factors that influence roadway rock structure deterioration in Baoguo Iron Mine. Firstly, the stability of rock mass was analyzed from the perspective of the physical and structural characteristics of the rock mass. Afterwards, according to monitoring data of mining blasting vibration, a suitable safety blasting prediction model for Baoguo Iron Mine was determined. And then, combining the results of mining blasting vibration monitoring and deformation monitoring, the effect of cyclic mining blasting on the stability of the soft rock roadway was obtained. By systematically studying the intrinsic factors of rock quality degradation and external environmental disturbances and their interactions, this paper comprehensively explores the deformation mechanism of soft rock roadway and provides the support for fundamentally solving the large deformation problems of soft rock roadway in underground mines.

In this study, the deformation characteristics and mechanical properties of coal and rock mass in the S2N5 working face of the Xiaokang coal mine are analyzed to address the problem of large deformation of soft rocks with high in situ stress surrounding roadways. Through a newly developed grouting pipe, a double-shell grouting technology, consisting of low-pressure grouting and high-pressure split grouting, is proposed for the Xiaokang coal mine. In addition, the effect of grouting is evaluated by borehole peeping and deformation monitoring. The results show that the double-shell grouting technology can effectively improve the overall mechanical properties of the surrounding coal and rock mass, preventing the large deformation and failure of the roadway. This technology can be useful when analyzing and preventing large deformation of soft rock roadways.

Before taking any measures to build a tunnel, the rock (soil) is in a primary stress state, which means that the stress state is a function of the thickness of the overburden. At the moment when the measures necessary to excavate a tunnel are taken, the rock state changes from primary to secondary, leading to stress concentration, especially in the tunnel abutments. If the rock is capable of accepting these stresses, a state of equilibrium is reached after certain deformations. Plastic deformations can occur if the stresses are larger than the strength of the rock mass. To avoid excessive deformations or collapse of the rock and the tunnel excavation, it is necessary to place a support. The achieved factor of safety is a function of both the support type and the time when the support is installed. This paper shall present a numerical example of different pressures considered in order to obtain the rock’s reaction curve.
