An Empirical Study in the Influence of Human Capital of Higher Education and Secondary Education on the Development of Tourism Industry Based on Panel Data

The academic year 2019/20 is marked by the arrival at university of students born in the new millennium. When this generation of students began to ‘learn grammar’ at school, teachers and other specialists were debating the terminology for basic and secondary education and the place of grammar in the curriculum was changing. In this article, we propose to contribute to a description of the knowledge about language to which millennials had access, more than a decade after the Terminological Dictionary (DT) became official (DGE, 2008). Assuming that there is a prescribed curriculum and a real curriculum, we start from the question what is the place of grammar in the curriculum to offer a comparative analysis of the discourse prescribed for the teaching of grammar in official curricular documents approved between 2000/01 and 2019/20. From this analysis, we present an empirical study assessing the grammatical knowledge in European Portuguese of 65 students entering higher education in 2019/20. For this study, we used a diagnostic instrument, assessing knowledge of different grammatical topics, mainly in the domains of morphology and syntax. The results obtained, which update data from previous studies on students’ difficulties in grammar learning, suggest that terminological standardization and changes in the prescribed curriculum have not solved all the problems in the teaching of grammar.

The state of Slovak education is influenced by several negative factors. In terms of human capital, we have seen the decline of pupils for demographic reasons and lack of interest in the work of teachers. This paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of secondary education on the example of selected secondary schools. The main method of the paper is multicriteria analysis. The subject of research is the efficiency of selected secondary schools. The 10 Business Academies attended by pupils aged 15-19 years and established in the Banská Bystrica and Žilina self-governing regions will be the subject of research. For the analysis we use panel data collected for the school years 2013/2014 - 2017/2018. The contribution of the paper is to create an evaluation of the efficiency of the surveyed schools and to propose solutions for schools that achieved below-average results. The findings may serve as a basis for assessing the efficiency of the Business Academies for comparison with competitors, as well as for the founders of these secondary schools.

When the literature of tourism higher education is concerned, Scholars from China and abroad have had a relatively deep and broad research in the field of the characteristics of tourism theory, according to which the curriculum system and teaching methods are designed, while at the same time, there is research vacancy when we look into the field of the practical ways of successful cultivating of tourism bachelor’s theory system. Thus, the article first proves the necessity of reading guidance to classics in professional curriculum of tourism higher education through theoretical analyzing of the interdisciplinary characteristics of tourism major and the human resource demands of tourism industry in China; then the empirical study and quantitative analysis of the effects and influential factors of classics reading guidance in tourism academic classes are made, according to these analysis, the article draws an conclusion that during the teaching of professional courses, the initiatives of the under-graduates to take part in the reading of classics should be attached full importance to in the syllabus; the effects of classics reading should try to be improved through the organization of specialized courses teaching; the input of students’ classics reading should be strengthened by the design of the cultivating methods; and the teaching resources should be optimized to provide better environment for classics reading. Besides these suggestions, four implementation methods are also provided as the conclusion.

A brief historical overview of the evolution of the public discourse of the purpose of higher education is undertaken to provide context for current debates over investment in, and reform of, post-secondary education. Four separate discourses are identified: higher education for enlightenment, to develop human capital, as manpower management, and as consumerism. The dominant discourse of the purpose of higher education is shown to have changed from learning for its own sake to an emphasis on manpower planning and consumerism. The separate assumptions and implications of these distinct discourses are often confabulated with little apparent awareness of the contradictory nature of rhetoric drawn from more than one discourse at a time. The authors provide a simple analytical framework to cut through the confusion.

Students' Independent Professional Activity in Pedagogical PracticeThe topicality of the research is determined by the need for changes in higher education concerned with implementing the principles of sustainable education. The article focuses on teacher training, highlighting the teacher's profession as an attractive choice of one's career that permits to ensure the development of general and professional skills and an opportunity for new specialists to align with the labour market. The empirical study of students' understanding of their professional activity and of the conditions for its formation is conducted by applying structured interviews (of practice supervisors, students, academic staff); students and experts' questionnaire. Comparative analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and triangulation were used in case studies. As a result, a framework of pedagogical practice organisation has been created in order to form students' independent professional activity. The criteria and indicators of independent professional activity have been formulated and suggestions for designers of study programmes and organisers of the study process have been provided.

The author considers the questions relating to the formation of lawyers’ professional traits from the point of view of the significance which human capital and investment in this capital hold in contemporary times. It follows from the analyses, which were carried out, that the dire need for taking up actions with the aim to shape lawyers appears one of the most vital tasks. This requires taking into account visible trends in the changing job market. Another aspect results from the need for multilevel qualifications and conditions behind lawyers’ actions and their decisions. Thus, colleges of higher education which educate prospective lawyers, as well as lawyers’ corporations, are confronted by challenges of forming, in young people, features that are indispensable for them to be valuable lawyers and not only executors of simple activities. The author points to the fact that lawyers need shaping because, among others, during their whole social lives and realization of professional tasks their personality traits and potential related to communication will constantly manifest through accepting and following or rejecting and opposing values, principles, reflexions, empathy, sensitivity, the farthest-fetched imagination, objectivism, cooperation, dialogue, distancing themselves from political disputes, etc. Students of the art of law should be characterized by a changed mentality, new vision of law – service to man, and realization of standards of law, as well as perception of the importance of knowledge, skills, attitudes and competences.

In this study, an attempt has been made to estimate the incidences of job mismatch in Pakistan. The study has divided the job mismatch into three categories; education-job mismatch, qualification mismatch and field of study and job mismatch. Both the primary and secondary datasets have been used in which the formal sector employed graduates have been targeted. This study has measured the education-job mismatch by three approaches and found that about one-third of the graduates are facing education-job mismatch. In similar, more than one-fourth of the graduates are mismatched in qualification, about half of them are over-qualified and the half are under-qualified. The analysis also shows that 11.3 percent of the graduates have irrelevant and 13.8 percent have slightly relevant jobs to their studied field of disciplines. Our analysis shows that women are more likely than men to be mismatched in field of study.
