Aluminium based composites exhibit many attractive material properties such as increased stiffness, wear resistance, specific strength and vibration damping and decreased co-efficient of thermal expansion compared with the conventional aluminium alloys. Aluminium Matrix Composites consist of non-metallic reinforcement which offers advantageous properties over base material. Reinforcements like SiC, B4C and Al2O3 are normally preferred to improve the mechanical properties. Here Aluminum LM25 is selected as matrix material while Silicon carbide and Boron carbide are selected as reinforcement material. The fabrication of aluminium matrix was done by stir casting method. In the present study an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of three major stir casting parameters (stir speed, stir duration and preheated temperature of reinforcement material) on stir casting of Aluminium LM25 - SiC - B4C composite. Experiments were conducted based on Taguchi methodology. Taguchi quality design concepts of L9 orthogonal array has been used to determine S/N ratio and through S/N ratio a set of optimum stir casting parameters were obtained. The experimental results confirmed the validity of Taguchi method for enhancing tensile strength of castings.

Abstract In this paper it is stated, that a set of quality features of metal matrix composite castings differs from the same set for castings of classic materials, although some features are common for both of these material groups. These features (pertaining to a set of quality characteristics of composite castings) have been named as specific, they have not been determined yet and a description of material quality should be performed (according to the qualitology) on a principle of description of quality characteristics of this product. Therefore, this set of features has been determined. It was proposed to add the following characteristics to the set of specific features of composite castings quality: matrix material, reinforcement material, binding between components and porosity of the composite casting. In this set a sub-set of quality characteristics of composite castings was also determined.

Residual hemicellulose could enhance cellulose nanofiber (CNF) processing as it impedes the agglomeration of the nanocellulose fibrils and contributes to complete nanofibrillation within a shorter period of time. Its effect on CNF performance as a reinforcement material is unclear, and hence this study seeks to evaluate the performance of CNF in the presence of amorphous hemicellulose as a reinforcement material in a polypropylene (PP) nanocomposite. Two types of CNF were prepared: SHS-CNF, which contained about 11% hemicellulose, and KOH-CNF, with complete hemicellulose removal. Mechanical properties of the PP/SHS-CNF and PP/KOH-CNF showed an almost similar increment in tensile strength (31% and 32%) and flexural strength (28% and 29%) when 3 wt.% of CNF was incorporated in PP, indicating that hemicellulose in SHS-CNF did not affect the mechanical properties of the PP nanocomposite. The crystallinity of both PP/SHS-CNF and PP/KOH-CNF nanocomposites showed an almost similar value at 55–56%. A slight decrement in thermal stability was seen, whereby the decomposition temperature at 10% weight loss (Td10%) of PP/SHS-CNF was 6 °C lower at 381 °C compared to 387 °C for PP/KOH-CNF, which can be explained by the degradation of thermally unstable hemicellulose. The results from this study showed that the presence of some portion of hemicellulose in CNF did not affect the CNF properties, suggesting that complete hemicellulose removal may not be necessary for the preparation of CNF to be used as a reinforcement material in nanocomposites. This will lead to less harsh pretreatment for CNF preparation and, hence, a more sustainable nanocomposite can be produced.

Basalt fiber is a novel high-performance inorganic material, recently has been well received as a reinforcement in China. However, the applications in civil engineering have been rather limited. The chemical compositions, the characteristics of basalt fibers, and the typical products of basalt, including chopped yarn of basalt fiber, basalt fiber geo-textiles and basalt fiber reinforced polymer, were introduced.The advantages of basalt fibers as a reinforcement of concrete were explored in comparison with the commonly used reinforcing fibers, which indicates that basalt fiber is the most promising reinforcement material for concrete and will significantly benefit civil construction industries in the future.

Metal matrix composites (MMC's) have attracted the attention of researchers for quite some time. In the last 15 years, many studies have been reported in this field of MMC production through various routes. The most commonly used process for producing MMC is stir casting process whereby the reinforcement material is incorporated into the molten metal by stirring. It is a relatively low cost manufacturing process that is capable of producing high quality MMC. However, the process is associated with issues such as attaining uniform distribution of particles, wettability between particles and porosity in the MMCs. Because of these challenges, there has been continuous improvement in the process as well as the design of the furnace. In this research, an innovatively designed bottom tapping furnace has been used to produce the MMCs and the produced sample is characterized.

Over many years, asbestos has been used as reinforcement material in the production of brake pads production but it has lost favour due to its carcinogenic nature, as a result, there is need to investigate other possible substitute which can offer similar tribological properties as the carcinogenic material (asbestos). Several works has been carried out using different reinforcement material with the aim of finding a possible replacement for asbestos. In this work, Rule of mixture (ROM) was ustlised for sample formulation and the tribological properties of natural based material (coconut shell and seashell) were investigated using experimental design (response surface methodology) and multi-response optimisation technique (Grey relational analysis). The multi-response performance of the formulated brake pads samples was compared with a commercial brake pad sample. The research findings revealed that sample can be produced using 52% reinforcement, 35% binder, 8% abrasive and 5% friction modifier while the Grey relational analysis (GRA) showed that optimum multi-response performance of the developed coconut shell based sample can be achieved using MP, MT and CT and HTT of 12MPa, 100 oC, 6mins and 2hrs respectively while that of the developed seashell based brake pad can be achieved using MP, MT and CT and HTT of 10MPa, 160 oC, 12mins and 2hrs respectively. Also, the Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results show a percentage error of less than 5% indicating minima noise effect. In addition, the optimized coconut shell-based brake pads falls within the category of class H (µ >0.55) type of brake pads while seashell based sample falls within the class G (µ: 0.45-0.55) type of brake pads. It therefore concluded that the use of coconut shell can serve as a better substitute for asbestos-based brake pads.
