Aging face recognition poses as a key difficulty in facial recognition. It refers to identification of a person face over varied ages. It includes issues like age estimation, progression and verification. Non-availability of facial aging databases make it harder for any system to achieve good accuracy as there are no good training sets available. Age estimation when done correctly has a varied number of real life applications like age detailed vending machines, age specific access control and finding missing children. This paper implements age estimation using Park Aging Mind laboratory - Face database that contains metadata and 293 unique images of 293 individuals. Ages range from 19 to 45 with a median age of 32. Race is classified into two categories : African-American and Caucasian giving an accuracy of 98%. Sobel edge detection and Orthogonal locality preservation projection were used as the dominant features for the training and testing of age estimation. A Multi-stage binary classification using support vector machine was used to classify images into an age group thereafter predicting an individual’s age. The effectiveness of this method can be increased by using a large dataset with a wider age range.

Age changes cause major variations in the appearance of human faces. Due to many lifestyle factors, it is difficult to precisely predict how individuals may look with advancing years or how they looked with "retreating" years. This paper is a review of age variation methods and techniques, which is useful to capture wanted fugitives, finding missing children, updating employee databases, enhance powerful visual effect in film, television, gaming field. Currently there are many different methods available for age variation. Each has their own advantages and purpose. Because of its real life applications, researchers have shown great interest in automatic facial age estimation. In this paper, different age variation methods with their prospects are reviewed. This paper highlights latest methodologies and feature extraction methods used by researchers to estimate age. Different types of classifiers used in this domain have also been discussed.

The Mahalanobis Taguchi System (MTS) is considered one of the most promising binary classification algorithms to handle imbalance data. Unfortunately, MTS lacks a method for determining an efficient threshold for the binary classification. In this paper, a nonlinear optimization model is formulated based on minimizing the distance between MTS Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curve and the theoretical optimal point named Modified Mahalanobis Taguchi System (MMTS). To validate the MMTS classification efficacy, it has been benchmarked with Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Naive Bayes (NB), Probabilistic Mahalanobis Taguchi Systems (PTM), Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE), Adaptive Conformal Transformation (ACT), Kernel Boundary Alignment (KBA), Hidden Naive Bayes (HNB), and other improved Naive Bayes algorithms. MMTS outperforms the benchmarked algorithms especially when the imbalance ratio is greater than 400. A real life case study on manufacturing sector is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and to compare its performance with Mahalanobis Genetic Algorithm (MGA).

Cancer incidence is rising, and accurate prediction of incident cancers could be relevant to understanding and reducing cancer incidence. The aim of this study was to develop machine learning (ML) models that could predict an incident diagnosis of cancer. Participants without any history of cancer within the Lifelines population-based cohort were followed for a median of 7 years. Data were available for 116,188 cancer-free participants and 4232 incident cancer cases. At baseline, socioeconomic, lifestyle, and clinical variables were assessed. The main outcome was an incident cancer during follow-up (excluding skin cancer), based on linkage with the national pathology registry. The performance of three ML algorithms was evaluated using supervised binary classification to identify incident cancers among participants. Elastic net regularization and Gini index were used for variables selection. An overall area under the receiver operator curve (AUC) <0.75 was obtained, the highest AUC value was for prostate cancer (random forest AUC = 0.82 (95% CI 0.77–0.87), logistic regression AUC = 0.81 (95% CI 0.76–0.86), and support vector machines AUC = 0.83 (95% CI 0.78–0.88), respectively); age was the most important predictor in these models. Linear and non-linear ML algorithms including socioeconomic, lifestyle, and clinical variables produced a moderate predictive performance of incident cancers in the Lifelines cohort.

Multi-view classification aims at designing a multi-view learning strategy to train a classifier from multi-view data, which are easily collected in practice. Most of the existing works focus on multi-view classification by assuming the multi-view data are collected with precise information. However, we always collect the uncertain multi-view data due to the collection process is corrupted with noise in real-life application. In this case, this article proposes a novel approach, called uncertain multi-view learning with support vector machine (UMV-SVM) to cope with the problem of multi-view learning with uncertain data. The method first enforces the agreement among all the views to seek complementary information of multi-view data and takes the uncertainty of the multi-view data into consideration by modeling reachability area of the noise. Then it proposes an iterative framework to solve the proposed UMV-SVM model such that we can obtain the multi-view classifier for prediction. Extensive experiments on real-life datasets have shown that the proposed UMV-SVM can achieve a better performance for uncertain multi-view classification in comparison to the state-of-the-art multi-view classification methods.

There are several environmental factors such as temperature differential, moisture, oxidation, etc. that affect the extended life of the modified asphalt influencing its desired adhesive properties. Knowledge of the properties of asphalt adhesives can help to provide a more resilient and durable asphalt surface. In this study, a hybrid of Bayesian optimization algorithm and support vector regression approach is recommended to predict the adhesion force of asphalt. The effects of three important variables viz., conditions (fresh, wet and aged), binder types (base, 4% SB, 5% SB, 4% SBS and 5% SBS), and Carbon Nano Tube doses (0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%) on adhesive force are taken into consideration. Real-life experimental data (405 specimens) are considered for model development. Using atomic force microscopy, the adhesive strength of nanoscales of test specimens is determined according to functional groups on the asphalt. It is found that the model predictions overlap with the experimental data with a high R2 of 90.5% and relative deviation are scattered around zero line. Besides, the mean, median and standard deviations of experimental and the predicted values are very close. In addition, the mean absolute Error, root mean square error and fractional bias values were found to be low, indicating the high performance of the developed model.

We derive a mean-field algorithm for binary classification with gaussian processes that is based on the TAP approach originally proposed in statistical physics of disordered systems. The theory also yields an approximate leave-one-out estimator for the generalization error, which is computed with no extra computational cost. We show that from the TAP approach, it is possible to derive both a simpler “naive” mean-field theory and support vector machines (SVMs) as limiting cases. For both mean-field algorithms and support vector machines, simulation results for three small benchmark data sets are presented. They show that one may get state-of-the-art performance by using the leave-one-out estimator for model selection and the built-in leave-one-out estimators are extremely precise when compared to the exact leave-one-out estimate. The second result is taken as strong support for the internal consistency of the mean-field approach.


The increased usage of the Internet and social networks allowed and enabled people to express their views, which have generated an increasing attention lately. Sentiment Analysis (SA) techniques are used to determine the polarity of information, either positive or negative, toward a given topic, including opinions. In this research, we have introduced a machine learning approach based on Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naïve Bayes (NB) and Random Forest (RF) classifiers, to find and classify extreme opinions in Arabic reviews. To achieve this, a dataset of 1500 Arabic reviews was collected from Google Play Store. In addition, a two-stage Classification process was applied to classify the reviews. In the first stage, we built a binary classifier to sort out positive from negative reviews. In the second stage, however we applied a binary classification mechanism based on a set of proposed rules that distinguishes extreme positive from positive reviews, and extreme negative from negative reviews. Four major experiments were conducted with a total of 10 different sub experiments to fulfill the two-stage process using different X-validation schemas and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency feature selection method. Obtained results have indicated that SVM was the best during the first stage classification with 30% testing data, and NB was the best with 20% testing data. The results of the second stage classification indicated that SVM has scored better results in identifying extreme positive reviews when dealing with the positive dataset with an overall accuracy of 68.7% and NB showed better accuracy results in identifying extreme negative reviews when dealing with the negative dataset, with an overall accuracy of 72.8%.

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) associated with our series of patients with vein of Galen malformations (VOGM) are analyzed and discussed. We retrospectively analyzed 87 consecutive cases of VOGM treated between May 2002 and December 2011 and identified 26 patients with DAVF. We gathered information from the clinical case records, angiographic images, MRI on presentation and during follow-up. The findings were analyzed to aid discussion. Among 87 patients treated by multi-stage endovascular embolization, age range from newborn to 19 years, 26 (30%) had DAVF. In seven patients (8%), DAVF were found on initial angiogram and were all into the VOGM. Nineteen (21%) DAVF found on follow-up angiograms were all into the VOGM and distant locations. Sprouting and non-sprouting angiogenesis resulted in the formation of a network of vessels around partially thrombosed VOGM, recruiting blood from the surrounding dura mater resulting in a secondary network on the dura mater supplied by the blood vessels of dura mater in the region or from its natural collaterals. Embolization targeting DAVFs was done in 13 (52%) with complete cure in eight (32%) and recurrence in five (20%). Among 12 non-embolized patients (48%), eight (32%) had spontaneous regression with continued treatment of VOGM. In others, the DAVF either remained stable or progressed. DAVF associated with VOGM represent the dural response to angiogenic stimuli. They are observed to regress spontaneously or mature while continuing to treat the primary feeders of VOGM. It is important to include the external carotid system during angiograms. Persistent DAVF with residual VOGM that do not have access though the pial vessels are used as a conduit to treat the dural shunt and to achieve obliteration of residual VOGM at later stages of treatment.
