The quality and the variability of the chemical composition and antimicrobial properties of essentials oils isolated from Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) leaves, which were studied from two different regions that are ecologically various. The average yield of essential oil is 0,56 % for the Ras Elma Tazekka region (mountain) and 0,36% for the Debdou region (plain). An analysis made by GC and GC/ MS identified 22 components in Tetraclinis articulata leaves essential oil in the mountain area and 29 components in the plain area. These major components represent the variability of quantity. The percentages following respectively by the two areas are: Bornyl acetate (34,84%; 32,55%), α-Pinene (11,41%; 18,83%), Camphor (11,24 %; 11,31%), Limonene (11,94 %; 8%) and Borneol (8,35%; 7,79%). The antimicrobial activity of T. articulata essential oil was tested against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli which has been inhibited from the 50μg / mL concentration for the Debdou region (Plain) and 25μg / mL for that of the Ras Elma Tazekka region (Mountain).

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oil isolated from Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) leaves, Masters originating in Morocco (Benslimane Region, Atlantic-influenced plain). The analysis of the major compounds of essential oil was performed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and this oil is dominated by bornyl acetate (35.05%), camphor (11.17%), and α-pinene (10.84%). The antioxidant properties were evaluated by the test of the radical trap 2,2-diphényl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and the antimicrobial activity of T. articulata essential oil was tested against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli which have been inhibited from the 25 μg/mL.

Endophytic and rhizosphere fungi are understood to be aiding the host plant to overcome a range of biotic and abiotic stresses (nutrition depletion, droughts, etc.) hence, they remain to be reservoirs of plethora of natural products with immense use. Consequently, this investigation of endophytic and rhizosphere fungi isolated from Mikania cordata (a perennial vine that is well established in Sri Lanka) for their antimicrobial properties was performed with the aim of future derivation of potential beneficial pharmaceutical products. Leaves, twigs, and roots of M. cordata were utilized to isolate a total of 9 endophytic fungi out of which the highest amount (44%) accounted was from the twigs. A sample of the immediate layer of soil adhering to the root of M. cordata was utilized to isolate 15 rhizosphere fungi. Fusarium equiseti and Phoma medicaginis were endophytes that were identified based on colony and molecular characteristics. The broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity depicted by F. equiseti (MK517551) was found to be significantly greater (p≤0.05, inhibitory against Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 25853) than P. medicaginis (MK517550) (inhibitory against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 25853) as assessed using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Trichoderma virens and Trichoderma asperellum were rhizospere fungi that exhibited remarkable antimicrobial properties against the test pathogens chosen for the study. T. asperellum indicated significantly greater bioactivity against all four bacterial pathogens and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 under study. The ranges of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the fungi depicting antimicrobial properties were determined. The results obtained suggest that F. equiseti, P. medicaginis, T. asperellum, and T. virens of M. cordata harness bioprospective values as natural drug candidates. This is the first report on isolation and evaluation of the antimicrobial properties of endophytic and rhizosphere fungi of Mikania cordata.

The essential oil of Achillea distans W. et K. flower heads was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Altogether 43 components in concentrations more than 0.1% were identified representing 93.5% of the oil composition. The main constituents were 1,8-cineole (16.8%), trans-thujone (9.8%), sabinene (8.2%), borneol (7.5%), β-pinene (6.5%), and camphor (5.8%). The oil showed moderate activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, and weak activity against Salmonella typhimurium, Proteus vulgaris, and Escherichia coli.

This is the first report about the composition of the essential oil of Salvia x jamensis. The major compounds identified by GC-MS were β-caryophyllene (14.8 %), β-pinene (6.8 %), caryophyllene oxide (6.0 %), δ-cadinene (5.5 %), α-pinene (5.2 %) and spatulenol (5.2 %). The oil showed antimicrobial activity against three Gram (+) bacteria: Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and S. epidermidis, and three Candida strains: C. albicans, C. glabrata and C. tropicalis, while it was inactive against three Gram (-) bacteria: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Enterobacter cloacae.

Three fruit oil samples of Ammodaucus leucotrichus Cosson & Durieu from Algerian Sahara were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC(RI), GC-MS and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The main compounds were perillaldehyde (87.0-87.9%) and limonene (7.4-8.2%). The antimicrobial effect of the essential oil was evaluated against bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi. High antibacterial activity was observed against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter cloaceae, Bacillus cereus and Salmonella typhimurium, with MIC values between 0.5-1.0 μL/mL. Fungal strains were also sensitive to the essential oil (MIC values: 0.25-0.75 μL/mL). The most potent activity was observed against the filamentous fungi, Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus flavus (0.25-0.50 μL/mL).

<p>The paper studies antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of <em>Tanacetum balsamita</em> L. from the family Asteraceae, tribus Anthemideae, the plant being medicinally and pharmaceutically promising. Antimicrobial properties of <em>Tanacetum balsamita</em> were studied on test-cultures, collected from the Ukrainian Collection of Microorganisms (UCM, Institute of microbiology and virology SAS Ukraine), the test-cultures being of <em>Escherichia coli </em>(coliform bacillius) UCM B-906 (ATCC 25922); <em>Staphilococcus aureus</em> (golden staphylococcus) UCM B-904 (ATCC 25923); <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em> (blue pus bacillus) UCM B-900 (ATCC 9027); <em>Candida albicans</em> UCM Y-1918 (ATCC 885-653). The above microorganisms are test strains used to determine antimicrobial properties of medicines. The antimicrobial effect of the investigated substances was studied by the method of successive dilutions which determines minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC). The extract has demonstrated selective antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria strains of <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. In comparison with the solvent, MIC and MBC values showed an 8-times increase. <em>T.</em><em> </em><em>balsamita</em> extract revealed no bacteriostatic, bacteriocidal/fugicidal effect against gram-negative bacteria stains of <em>Escherichia coli, P. aeruginosa</em> and fungus <em>C. albicans</em>. The antimicrobial activity of the extract against <em>S. aureus</em> may be attributed to the presence of essential oil and phenolic compounds. The major compounds in the essential oil are epoxylynaloolacetate (60.13 %) and b-thujone (29.7 %). The following phenolic compounds have been determined with the high-performance liquid chromatography method: flavonoids – luteolin, apigenin, diosmetin, acacetin, apigenin-7-bioside, acacetin-7-bioside, apigenin-7-glycoside, luteolin-7-glycoside, diosmetin-7-bioside, diosmetin-7-glycoside, diosmetin-7-rhamnoside, and hydroxycinnamic acids – n-coumaric, caffeic, chlorogenic, isochlorogenic. The dominant compound is isochlorogenic acid (35 % of the total phenolic compounds detected). The experimental data obtained gives evidence that further research and application of <em>T. balsamita</em> is promising for creation of new anti-staphylococcus drugs.</p>

By the method of exhaustive hydroponically obtained essential oil from beans of Heracleum dissectum Ledeb., growing in the Krasnoyarsk region. Separate fractions of oil were obtained: the first after 45 minutes from the beginning of distillation, the second – after 2 hours, the third-after 5 hours, the fourth fraction was collected after the end of hydro-distillation. The component composition of both whole essential oil and its separate fractions was studied. The main components are octyl acetate (60.0%), octyl-2-methylpropanoate (10.2%), n-hexyl-2-methylbutanoate (9.0%). The main amount of octyl acetate (64.7%) is concentrated in the first fraction of the oil. The antimicrobial activity of various fractions of essential oil of borscht dissected against strains of opportunistic microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus 209p, MRSA, Proteus vulgaris. It was found that, depending on the duration of isolation, the antimicrobial activity of essential oil fractions in relation to Staphylococcus aureus 209p, MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa decreases, and in relation to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus vulgaris increases. The most pronounced inhibitory effect of the third and fourth fractions of essential oil against Klebsiella pneumonia. The antiradical activity of all studied samples of borscht essential oil dissected in reaction with stable free 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical was established. The first fraction showed minimal antiradical activity (15.1%), the fourth – maximum (49.2%).
