The transnationalization of television production has been examined by studies on formats and multinational media companies, which have often highlighted the resilience of the local in the global. This article investigates transnationalization on the micro level of television production, drawing on participant observations in a Dutch production company that is partly owned by an American conglomerate. It explores the deep entanglement of the local with the global in different facets of production – including legal, organizational and market aspects – as manifested in daily practices and decision-making in television production. Our analysis reveals an industrial logic of formatting that is not only induced by transnational ownership structures and business models but also deeply ingrained in production routines and programme conventions. Through this logic, transnationalization shapes media professionals’ daily work, the selection of programme ideas and the process of content development.

The present study investigates the factors that positively influence the efficacy of e-media business models. Taking into consideration the extant literature that mentions the ineffectiveness of the subscription model, we try to investigate new factors that contribute to the success of e-media business models. Based on previous research, we examine the following five factors: specific content, innovation, multiple revenue sources, interactivity and media brand communities. In-depth case study analysis of three successful e-media companies is conducted in order to define whether each of the factors is considerable for e-media business models or not. Our results indicate that specific content, innovation, interactivity and media brand communities constitute significant features for e-media models while multiple source revenues are not a necessary factor for success. Finally, based on our results, various suggestions are proposed for entrepreneurial companies.

Online television services are changing the way television is funded, produced and experienced by its national and global audiences, with profound cultural implications. The case study presented here of Australian production company Ludo Studio and the animated series Bluey provides valuable insights into the increasingly complex interactions between the local and the global in television production, and the cultural counterflows they can engender. Television made for online distribution can encompass national policy settlements, funding bodies and public service media as well as globally oriented distribution arrangements on SVODs such as Disney +, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Drawing on interview material with Bluey’s key creatives, this research identifies how globalising influences are both shaping and amplifying the local in children’s television production cultures.

From 1948–1952, Rudy Vallée, a successful performer whose career spanned radio, film, recorded music and stage entertainment, expanded his operations into the burgeoning US television market with the launch of his independent production company, Vallée Video. One of hundreds of forgotten companies that arose during this period to meet growing demand for programming content, Vallée Video offers an important case study for understanding animation workers’ role in postwar television production. Drawing on corporate records and films preserved in the Rudy Vallée Papers at California’s Thousand Oaks Library and the UCLA Film and Television Archive, the authors’ analysis documents Vallée’s use of freelance artists and external animation houses for work ranging from camera effects for illustrated musical shorts to animated commercials and original cartoon series. These productions demonstrate the fluid movement of animation labor from theatrical film to small screen markets and participated in larger aesthetic shifts toward minimalist drawing styles and limited character animation that would soon dominate mid-20th century US television.

Media companies worldwide are trying to adapt to the new challenges brought about by the economic crisis and technological revolution. However, some of these efforts are doomed to fail because media tends to concentrate on adapting particular elements of their business models, instead of changing the entire business model logic. This work proposes an innovative business model typology and is based on the hypothesis that if a company could re-arrange its structural elements around this typology, it could have much better chances in its fight to overcome the challenges posed by the ever changing and competitive digital ecosystem. To test this typology the authors used case study methodology and drew from evidence collected from in-depth interviews with journalists from two Greek websites. Ultimately, the article provides the basis for generating new theories about business models and finds that even in times of crisis and transformational change, media companies can survive as long as they perceive crisis -and any other kind of challenge for that matter- as an opportunity for creative change.

Business models like product-service systems (PSSs) often recognise different sustainability goals and are seen as solutions for the impacts of consumption and fast fashion, but there is a lack of evidence supporting the environmental claims of such business models for clothing. The research aimed to understand if rental clothing business models such as PSSs have the environmental benefits often purported by quantifying the environmental impacts of rental formal dresses in a life-cycle assessment (LCA) in a case study in Stockholm, Sweden. The effects of varying consumer behaviour on the potential impact of a PSS vs. linear business model are explored through three functional units and 14 consumption scenarios. How users decide to engage with clothing PSSs dictates the environmental savings potential that a PSS can have, as shown in how many times consumers wear garments, how they use rental to substitute their purchasing or use needs, as well as how consumers travel to rental store locations.

The paper responds to research problems related to the implementation of large-scale investment projects in waterways in Europe. As part of design and construction works, it is necessary to indicate river ports that play a major role within the European transport network as intermodal nodes. This entails a number of challenges, the cardinal one being the optimal selection of port locations, taking into account the new transport, economic, and geopolitical situation that will be brought about by modernized waterways. The aim of the paper was to present an original methodology for determining port locations for modernized waterways based on non-cost criteria, as an extended multicriteria decision-making method (MCDM) and employing GIS (Geographic Information System)-based tools for spatial analysis. The methodology was designed to be applicable to the varying conditions of a river’s hydroengineering structures (free-flowing river, canalized river, and canals) and adjustable to the requirements posed by intermodal supply chains. The method was applied to study the Odra River Waterway, which allowed the formulation of recommendations regarding the application of the method in the case of different river sections at every stage of the research process.
