Delignification of the flax shive (wastes of oakum and heat insulation production) was studied. Chemical composition of the work material (mass parts in percents from the bone-dry material): cellulose 30,7, lignin 33,1, pentosans 28,0, extractable by organic solvent 4,3, extractable by hot water 5,4, ash 1,7. The flax shive was delignificated in laboratory condition by means of peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide and sulfate cooking solution. The conditions of peracetic pulping: initial mass part of the «icy» acetic acid in cooking solution 0,65, perhydrol 0,35, the catalyst concentration (sodium tungstate) 0,03 g-mol/dm3, liquid module 6, temperature 92 °C; pulp yield 46,1% without of undercooked pulp. The conditions of peroxide pulping: initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide 17%, liquid module 6, complex catalyst concentration 0,1 g-mol/dm3 (molar parts of the Na2WO4, Na2MoO4 and H2SO4 in catalyst composition are 0,3 : 0,3 : 0,4 accordingly), temperature 98 °C; pulp yield 45,8% without undercooked pulp. The conditions of sulfate pulping: initial concentration of active alkali 55 g/dm3 (in Na2O unit), degree of sulfidity 18%, liquid module 4, temperature 170 °C; pulp yield 32,3% without undercooked pulp. Samples of the technical cellulose, received by oxidizing methods, excel sulphate cellulose in relation to yield, ability for milling, whiteness and mechanical properties (except for tear). On the set of normalized properties they approach to characteristic of kraft bleached pulp from deciduous woods and can be considered as perspective stringy half-finished for production of the paper sanitary-household and hygienic purpose.

We studied three process modifications to investigate their effects on the property and yield recovery capabilities of kraft pulping integrated with hemicellulose pre-extraction of southern pine. Loblolly pine chips were pre-extracted with hot water until the sugar extraction yield reached the targeted value of 10% and then subjected to conventional and modified kraft pulping. Modification included polysulfide pretreatment; polysulfide-sodium borohydride dual pretreatment, and polysulfide followed by polysulfide-sodium borohydride dual pretreatment two-stage pretreatments prior to kraft pulping. In the first modification, about 5% of the lost pulp yield (total 7%) caused by hemicellulose pre-extraction could be recovered with 15%-20% polysulfide pretreatment. Complete recovery (7%) was achieved with simultaneous pretreatment using 15% polysulfide and 0.5% sodium borohydride with 0.1% anthraquinone in polysulfide-sodium borohydride dual pretreatment. Two-stage pretreatment using recycled 15% polysulfide followed by simultaneous treatment of 6% polysulfide and 0.4%–0.5% sodium borohydride with 0.1% anthraquinone also achieved 100% yield recovery. Continuous recycling of 15% polysulfide employed in the two-stage process modification maintained its yield protection efficiency in a repeated recycling cycle. No significant changes in paper strength were found in handsheets prepared from the three process modifications, except for a minor reduction in tear strength.

This study selects titanium dioxide (TiO2) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as far-infrared materials (FIRMs), and further adds water-based acrylic coatings to prepare far-infrared coatings (FIRCs). FIRCs are uniformly coated on #304 stainless steel sheets to make the test samples, which are then installed between the shell and insulation material of the hot water heater to measure the influences of various FIRCs on the performance of the hot water heater. The research results show no significant difference in the heating rate or heat insulation performance of the hot water heater with or without FIRCs coating. However, the uniformity of the water temperatures of the test samples is significantly improved with FIRCs. Considering that the uniformity of water temperature will inhibit the heating rate and heat insulation performance of the hot water heater, TiO2-FIRC should provide better performance improvement when applied to the hot water heater in this study. The application of TiO2-FIRC to large-scale hot water heaters with a high aspect ratio will effectively improve the quality of hot water supply in the future.

Extracting indium from water quenching slag, which contains poor indium, by two process of leaching, the effect of different oxidants and dosages on the leaching rate of indium in water quenching slag were studied. The leaching conditions: temperature 80 °C, leaching time 2 h, the liquid to solid ratio of neutral leaching 8︰1, the liquid to solid ratio of acid leaching 2︰1, initial concentration of sulfuric acid 500 g·L-1, adding different oxidants, the concentration was detected by crystal violet spectrophotometry. Test results showed that the leaching rate of indium was significantly improved by adding hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate. Compared with the effect of different oxidants, the effect of potassium permanganate was significantly higher than that of hydrogen peroxide on the leaching rate of indium.

Tung oil with an iodine value (IV) of 99.63 g I2/100 g was epoxidized in-situ with glacial acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), in the presence sulfuric acid as catalyst. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of mole ratio of H2O2 to unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), reaction time and catalyst concentration in Tung oil epoxidation. The reaction kinetics were also studied. Epoxidation was carried out for 4 h. The reaction rates and side reactions were evaluated based on the IV and the conversion of the epoxidized Tung oil to oxirane. Catalytic reactions resulted in higher reaction rate than did non-catalytic reactions. Increasing the catalyst concentration resulted in a large decrease in the IV and an increase in the conversion to oxirane at the initial reaction stage. However, higher catalyst concentration in the epoxidation reaction caused to a decrease in reaction selectivity. The mole ratio of H2O2 to UFA had an influence identical to the catalyst concentration. The recommended optimum mole ratio and catalyst concentration in this study were 1.6 and 1.5%, respectively. The highest conversion was 48.94% for a mole ratio of 1.6. The proposed kinetic model provided good results and was suitable for all variations in reaction temperature. The activation energy (Ea) values were around 5.7663 to 76.2442 kcal/mol. Copyright © 2020 BCREC Group. All rights reserved

The oxidation of diphenyl sulfide (Ph2S) by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium metavanadate (NaVO3) has been studied kinetically by means of iodometry of hydrogen peroxide. The reaction rate is expressed as: v = k[NaVO3]st[Ph2S]2, when the concentration of catalyst is very low and [Ph2S]0/[H2O2]0 > 2, where []st and []0 mean stoichiometric and initial concentration, respectively. The effective oxidant may consist of polymeric as well as monomeric peroxyvanadate in view of the effect of concentration of catalyst on the rate. The main oxidizing species at low concentration of catalyst seems to be diperoxyvanadate VO5−. The rate constant k2 in v = k2[Ph2S]2 tends to decrease with initial concentration of H2O2, which is present in excess of the catalyst. A probable mechanism for the oxidation is discussed.

Tomatoes are among the most important horticultural crops; however, it is estimated that 30% of tomato yield is lost due to postharvest rot due to Rhizopus stolonifer, a fungus which requires lesions to initiate the infectious process. Tomato fruit cracking is a physiopathy which causes significant economic losses, since cracking is the door used by the fungus. In this experiment, 14 cultivars of tomato of different types were used. Fruit sampling was carried out in the middle of the crop cycle, coinciding with the peak of yield; then, the fruits were divided into two groups: one group was inoculated with Rhizopus in order to assess the effectiveness of washing, whilst the other was treated with sterile water. The fruits of each group were divided into lots to be treated with six washing treatments: dipping in hot water at 20, 40 and 60 °C for 20 s; the fruits were then sprayed with the following solutions: 0.6% of Hydrogen Peroxide 23% + Peracetic acid 15%; commercial bleach at 0.5% and 2% of Hydrogen Peroxide 50%. The control sample was not washed. The results show that there was an influence of cultivar on fruit cracking, which was strongly related with Rhizopus infection. Three cultivars were not susceptible to cracking, and therefore, were not sensitive to Rhizopus infection. The effectiveness of different washing treatments of tomato fruits depends on several factors; nonetheless, hot water treatment has been shown to be more effective than the use of chemical products such as commercial bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Another factor, the susceptibility of cultivars to cracking, determines the effectiveness of the washing treatment. The results provide an important basis for making decisions about the washing management of tomato fruits in packaging houses.

The effects were evaluated of six methods and six durations of seed treatment on the germination of wild sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) seeds. The treatments were as follows: (1) hot water at 80 °C, (2) hot water at 100 °C, (3) oven-drying at 80 °C, (4) oven-drying at 100 °C, (5) immersion in concentrated sulphuric acid and (6) immersion in 10% hydrogen peroxide. The durations were 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 min. Treatment with hot water at 80 or 100 °C for 11–14 min, and oven-drying at 100 °C for 20 min all resulted in more than 65% germination 10 d after treatment. Oven-drying at 80 °C, immersion in concentrated sulphuric acid and in 10% hydrogen peroxide resulted in less than 50% germination. Based on the higher cumulative germination, lower cost, and environmental concerns, hot water treatment at 80 or 100 °C for 11–15 min is recommended.
