Recent advances in technology have encouraged proposals for new approaches to ATC in Europe and elsewhere. Two such proposals, both rather loosely framed, are for ‘free flight’ or for ‘seamless contracts’; otherwise ‘tubes of flight’. These concepts, and variations on them, aim to increase the traffic capacity of the airspace. They have been the subject of numerous published papers. Given the declared objects of these systems, it is surprising that, nearly without exception, these papers discuss the proposals only in qualitative terms. The present paper discusses idealised versions of these systems on the basis of quantitative studies. It is concluded that the ‘seamless contract’ is very probably unworkable in Europe. ‘free flight’ is workable in principle, but there is a need for investigation of possible mechanisms by which last-minute problems may be resolved.

The aim of the study is an attempt to refer to the historiography of a small microregion at the border of today's provinces: Lubuskie and Wielkopolskie, called "Babimojszczyzna". The time perspective relating to the events of World War I, Polish-German disputes, as well as the transformations in Poland and Germany after 1989 requires a new approach to historical narratives. The thesis of the article is the assumption that the hitherto historiography of this complex microregion in Polish-German relations in the first half of the 20th century did not develop new approaches. Another problem is the lack of real effects under the research models on the Polish and German narratives of the last thirty years. Their lack is particularly noticed in the context of the condition of social memory in the vicinity of Babimost, where only the tradition of the Polish Uprising 1918-1919 and the struggle for Polishness is cultivated, without a broader context. The discussed region can also be an interesting example for other similar historical areas, which, like all borderlands, were the subject of natural osmosis rather than their contact.

In this essay, Vijay Phulwani posits that Du Bois uses the language of tragedy in 1935’s Black Reconstruction in America to emphasize the constraints and limitations created by white supremacy and subvert the tragic legend of Reconstruction. Informed by his changing understanding of the role of slaves and freedmen in the Civil War and Reconstruction, Du Bois’s ideas moved from an emphasis on internal racial uplift and external political agitation to a theory of economic separatism and a strategic embrace of segregation. Du Bois returned to the subject of Reconstruction many times throughout his career, using it to rethink and further develop his ideas about the form and content of black politics. Phulwani argues that by continuing to analyze Reconstruction, Du Bois was able to simultaneously narrate its history and model alternative strategies for building black political and economic power.

It is well known throughout most of the country that the public schools have had to make changes in the content of their courses, particularly offerings in mathematics, because of the vast increase in knowledge and changes in emphasis in various disciplines. The schools have been forced to retrain their teachers or make the teachers themselves responsible for securing additional education, so that the new content and the new approaches to teaching the new content, can be used successfully. Through in-service institutes and courses, teachers have, in many cases, been markedly helped in their desire to become up-to-date in the subject matter for which they are responsible. Unfortunately, it is necessary for schools to employ from 5 to 44 percent new staff members each year. The question arises, “Are the newcomers prepared in modern content to teach the up-dated courses now being offered in our schools?”

This article explores the intention and effects of New Labour's ‘conditional’ welfare-to-work strategy. Conditionality has been the subject of substantive debate, with New Labour distinguishing its own contractualist welfare reforms from alternative strategies, often associated with ‘punitive’ US workfare. This article assesses whether New Labour's attempt to fashion what is described as ‘reciprocal responsibility’ in welfare arrangements avoided the commonly cited by-products of workfare. To achieve this, evidence is presented from the British Social Attitudes series, which shows a profound hardening of attitudes towards the unemployed. In light of these findings, the evidence supports arguments about the adverse effects that welfare contractualism can have for wider social relations.

The article examines the phenomenon of religious scopchestvo that emerged in the ancient Near East, spread throughout the classical Mediterranean world, and subsequently evolved during the European Middle Ages. The main focus is on the sect of the scoptsy — its inception, growth, expansion, and decline — in Russia during the period from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The purpose of the article is to examine this sect’s historical and psychological background, the triggers behind its emergence and decay, and why both the state and society happened tolerate it for quite some time in spite of being obviously harmful. The author’s conclusion is that the origin and downfall of this display of barbarism were equally triggered by the repressive policy of the state. Among other issues, the author asserts that such emotionally-charged expressions of barbarism turn out to be a necessary attribute of psychological adjustment when moving to a new level of societal development. While much has been written on the subject of religious scopchestvo — and, specifically on the mystic and ecstatic sectarianism in Russia — the theme appears to be understudied and open to new approaches, like the one advocated in this article with no parallels in Russian or world scholarship.

Alternative approaches in illustration language have constantly been developing in terms of material and technical aspects. Illustration languages also differ in terms of semantics and form. Differences in formal expressions for increasing the effect of the subject on the audience lead to diversity in the illustrations. M. C. Escher’s three-dimensional images to be perceived in a two-dimensional environment, together with mathematical and symmetry-oriented studies and the systematic formed by a numerical structure in its background, are associated with the notion of illustration in terms of fictional meaning. Istvan Orosz used the technique of anamorphosis and made it possible for people to see their perception abilities and visual perception sensitivities in different environments created by him. This study identifies new approaches and illustration languages based on the works of both artists, bringing an alternative proposition to illustration languages in terms of systematic sub-structure and fictional idea sketches. Keywords: Perception, illusion, illustration, fictional illustration, illustration languages, visual perception.

It is now established practice in descriptive linguistics to treat the subject-matter at separate, and definably separate, levels of analysis. Indeed the traditional categories of Phonology and Grammar represent such an employment of two different levels. Present-day linguists in Great Britain and America recognize the setting up and denning of the various levels of analysis as a basic procedure in handling the utterances of the speakers whose language is being studied.

The dietary strategies of a 25-year-old bodybuilder were studied as he prepared for a contest. Food records were kept over a 6-month period that included the off-season, weight reduction phase, and week of a contest. Mean caloric intake during the off-season was 4,193 kcal (49 kcal/kg), Average intake per kg body weight was 8.7 g/kg carbohydrate and 2.8 g/kg protein. During the weight reduction phase of training, mean caloric intake was 3,020 kcal (37 kcal/kg). Carbohydrate intake averaged 6.1 g/kg and protein averaged 2.7 g/kg. The RDA was met for all micronutrients without any need for supplementation. Beginning at 3 weeks before the contest, dietary intake changed dramatically and haddock, rice, or potato were eaten every 2 hours. Protein intake averaged 4 g/kg. Carbo-loading was practiced the week precontest to enhance muscularity. During all phases the subject used anabolic steroids and consumed various supplements. During the off-season he took a high potency multivitamin/multimineral daily and 60-100 grams of amino acids when “needed.” As the competition drew closer, numerous additional supplements were taken. In light of these many unhealthy practices, alternative strategies should be negotiated with the athlete that are realistic, and changes should be implemented slowly.

I discuss the subject of powerlike asymptotic behavior of hadronic form factors in pre-QCD analyses of soft (Feynman/Drell-Yan) and hard (West) mechanisms, and also recent derivation of 1/Q2 asymptotics of meson form factors in AdS/QCD. At the end, I briefly comment on "light-front holography" ansatz.
