Resumo: Nesse artigo temos como objetivo apresentar uma leitura comparada do conto “Encontros na Península”, de Milton Hatoum com “A causa secreta”, de Machado de Assis. Ao longo do trabalho apresentamos algumas reflexões em torno da pergunta da personagem Victoria Soller. Teoricamente nos baseamos em Carvalhal (2004) com a obra Literatura Comparada, e em Bakhtin Dialogismo e Polifonia (2016). Notamos através das relações intertextuais que o conto “Encontros na Península” dialoga com alguns textos machadianos. Palavras-chave: Machado de Assis; Milton Hatoum; Literatura comparada. Abstract: In this article we aim to present a comparative reading of the short story “Encontros na Península”, by Milton Hatoum with “A causa secreta”, by Machado de Assis. Throughout the work, we present some reflections on the question of the character Victoria Soller. Theoretically, we are based on Carvalhal (2004) with the book Comparative Literature, and on Bakhtin Dialogismo e Polifonia (2016). How can a certain monolingualism help theorize comparative literature? What does Hispanism have to say about comparison? By comparing texts by Julio Cortázar (on the cuento or short story) and Jacques Derrida (on the limit), Kelman suggests that the mode of communication called “Hispanism” is structured like a cuento: every focus on a delimited text in Spanish would also present another text that never fully appears. Cortázar especially invites us to think about a ghostly “comparative literature” at the heart of Hispanism. This spectral comparison—or a comparative literature in secret—would then touch the sovereignty of the Hispanist, even and especially when the emphasis remains limited to the monolingual.

Much has been published and discussed in relation to Edgar Allan Poe’s and Charles Baudelaire’s intertextual dialogues, as well as to the French reception of Poe’s writings and aesthetic theories through Baudelaire’s translations and essays. Likewise, there have been several studies in Brazil comparing Poe’s and Brazilian writer Machado de Assis’ short stories and individual aesthetic theories, as well as studies regarding Baudelaire’s aesthetic reception in 19th century Brazilian literature. However, despite some academic studies and papers in Brazil referring more closely to their literary projects and their possible intertextual bindings, a deeper study into how Machado de Assis may have actually read and subverted Poe’s writings so as to fit it within his own framework and thus help foster his project of defending the formation of a national literary identity still needs to be carried out. The same may be said about both Baudelaire’s role in Poe and Machado de Assis’ literary encounter and Machado de Assis’ reception of Baudelaire’s aesthetic theories and poetics. In this paper, therefore, I want to take a transatlantic voyage while addressing the question of how Machado de Assis may have actually incorporated and, paradoxically, subverted Poe’s and Baudelaire’s imagery, topoi and aesthetics into his own literary project. Two broad aspects regarding the three authors’ writings will be tackled: the universe of mind and man’s isolation vis-à-vis society, within the scope of the fantastic as a genre. To do so, I will focus on “Só!” [Alone/Lonely], a short-story published by Machado de Assis in 1885, thus aiming at addressing how the self, the wanderer and the observer appear in this story and how they dialogue with the same figures in some of Poe’s and Baudelaire’s writings.

 The  issue  of  women’s  life  has  always  been  an  interesting  topic  to  be discussed. This kind of issue has been widely delivered by story writers, which is by placing women as the main character in his/her work. It aims to convey the results of their thoughts in the form of literary works. As already been known, literary  works  are  one  of  an  essential  container  to  describe  the  reflexivity  of society.  Sensitive  issues  could  be  freely  expressed  in  literary  works.  As  an example  is  the  issue  of  women  which  is  described  in  short  stories  form  and published through the mass media. The  aims  of  this  paper  are  to  explain  the  forms  of  problems  or  issues revolving women that are presented in the ‘Baju’and ‘Rambutnya Juminten’text by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim. This study uses the theory of feminism by Simone de Beauvoir. Beauvoir suggests that women are considered as the second-class citizens or as the second sex due to patriarchal power, a notion that can lead to gender inequality (Kuntowijoyo 1987: 136). Based on the study, it was found that both texts reveal various forms of women’s issues, which are patriarchy and gender constructions. Both traditional women and an empress with a high social position experience the same issue. Although the two female figures were trying to speak up, they are being ignored. This is because there is a widely known stereotype that states that women are emotional and irrational, so women are considered unable to manage their own lives and are not suitable to speak in a public sphere. Keyword:  comparative  literature,  feminism,  short  story,  Ratna  Indraswari, women issues.

Resumo: Ao analisar o comportamento feminino das personagens de Machado de Assis, o ensino da Literatura no nível médio pode ganhar elementos para provocar a criticidade do aluno-leitor. Este texto focaliza o perfil da mulher submissa, recatada e reprimida pelos costumes e hábitos da sociedade brasileira do século XIX, baseados no machismo e na preservação da moralidade. A escolha do tema se deu pela necessidade de se trabalhar uma literatura reflexiva, que promova a criticidade e busque desenvolver o hábito da leitura no Ensino Médio. Apresentamos excertos do conto Uns Braços para ilustrar o desejo reprimido de uma senhora da sociedade, infeliz no casamento, em relação a um jovem rapaz, que a admira em silêncio. Assim, suscita uma reflexão acerca da mulher burguesa da época, que reverbera nas mulheres da atualidade. Os objetivos pretendidos foram alcançados, uma vez que se torna notória a possibilidade de análise reflexiva dos contos machadianos, com seus personagens e acontecimentos que trazem reflexões para a vida humana, seja na contextualização da época, seja na reflexão crítica da atualidade. Palavras-chave: Literatura Brasileira. Formação de Leitores.Abstract: By analyzing the female behavior of Machado de Assis' characters, the teaching of Literature at secondary level can gain elements to provoke the criticality of the student-reader. This text focuses on the profile of the submissive woman, demure and repressed by the customs and habits of nineteenth century Brazilian society, based on machismo and the preservation of morality. The theme was chosen because of the need to work on a reflective literature that promotes criticality and seeks to develop the habit of reading in high school. We present excerpts from the short story: "Uns Braços" to illustrate the repressed desire of a society lady, unhappy in her marriage, for a young man, who admires her in silence. Thus, it raises a reflection on the bourgeois woman of the time, which reverberates in women today. The intended objectives were achieved, since the possibility of reflective analysis of Machado's tales becomes notorious, with their characters and events that bring reflections to human life, whether in the context of the time, or in the critical reflection of today. Keywords: Brazilian Literature. The purpose of the essay is to discuss the peculiarities of Machado de Assis' own way of writing up the short story as confronted with the issues formerly enunciated by Edgar A. Poe in his so-called "theory of the prose tale". In this respect, analogies and marks of differentiation with the Impressionism and its assumptions are searched out with the final aim of stating the very originality of Machado de Assis' mode of narration. The ideas from Ricardo Piglia's "Teses Sobre o Conto" are also indicated so that the mood of duplicity and ambiguity which is spread throughout Machado de Assis' short stories could succesfully be argued.

In the twenty-first century some scholars started revisiting the works of the mulatto Machado de Assis through discussions about his racial identification and posture with regard to race. As a consequence a new range of reading possibilities has been released. The racial identification of the characters, hence, their interpretations, customarily based on an ideal hegemonic white model of society, began to be revised and challenged. Having racial marks attributed to the characters as the starting point while approaching them reveals Machado’s keen eye on the tension involved in the negotiations of spaces in the not always harmonious relations developed in the extremely mixed-race nineteenth-century Brazilian society. This essay resorts to the short story “Noite de almirante,” hitherto excluded from this perspective, as a case study to demonstrate the potential of such a reading.

Plagiarism is an immoral act in the world of authorship. But the extent to which the boundaries of a writing is called plagiarism or nonplagiat, that is what until it has not been given a benchmark. Speaking of plagiarism necessarily belongs to the originality of a writing, but when speaking of originality is certainly something that is impossible to do. For every writing must be the ideas of others in it. In the world of Indonesian literature, the issue of plagiarism has often occurred and is expressed. The incident a few years ago re-emerged in newspaper literature, precisely in the year 2011 ago. The case happened to a young writer, Dadang Ari Murtono (DAM), on the accusation that the short story in Rashomon Old Woman is a plagiarism of Rashomon's short story by Rynosuke Akutagawa, Japanese cerpenis. This paper examines the case of such plagiarism using the method of comparative literature study and using the theory of postmodernism. The purpose of this study is to uncover whether or not the DAMs act of plagiarism or the phenomenon is only political literature. In addition, it also opens up a new discourse that forms of writing as do DAM included in the category of theft or a new offer in the world of authorship.

Throughout the years, the Orient has been a mythical place to Portugaland Brazil, on which they reflect, albeit imaginatively, the dilemma of their ownidentities. In O Mandarim, Eça de Queiroz dramatizes the mediocrity of Portugueselife through Teodoro, who, while embarking on a voyage in search of a misteriousmandarin, ends up discovering his true self. In the short story Academia do Sião,Machado de Assis creates a bizarre plot, dealing with soul exchanges and corruptionin a grandiose Chinese Kingdom. Thus, from a luso-brazilian perspective, the Orientseems to stand for both the obscurity and the wonder of human condition.
