Mineral nutrition is essential for profitable production. Health affected is not provided proper levels minerals. Objective of the present work was to analyze mineral profile in serum of sows in lactation, province Santa Fe (A), Entre Rios (B) and fed with diets minerals of inorganic origin. Blood serum samples 68 sows, Farm A (in field) and Farm B (in stabled form) were analyzed. Mineral concentrations were determined by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry; ANOVA was applied to these data. Mean values and their standard deviations obtained are: Calcium (Ca) (mg/dL): 8,61±3,44/ 8,11± 1,73; Phosphorus (P) (mg/dL): 2,66a±0,90/ 3,53b± 1,16; Magnesium (Mg) (mg/dL): 2,25a±0,30/ 1,89b±0,35; Sodium (Na) (mEq/L): 160,98a±15,47/ 138,53b±9,48; Potassium (K) (mEq/L): 3,42±0,24/ 3,58±0,33; Iron (Fe) (µg/dL): 62,74a±6,07/ 94,82b±19,19; Copper (Cu) (ppm): 1,63a±0,35/ 1,01b±0,32; Zinc (Zn) (ppm): 1,82a±0,5/ 1,50b±0,42, for farms A and B respectively. Na and Zn averages were observed slightly above upper limit of normal range. Copper in farm B was observed below normal range. Significant difference (“a” and “b” P <0.05) in P, Mg, Na, Fe, Cu and Zn was observed between two farms, this is due to difference in gestation system. Cu concentration tended to be less. Is that subject should continue to be studied.

Abstract A method for the determination of serum arginase is given which combines the enzymatic formation of urea with the sensitive method of Coulombe (1) for measuring this substance. This procedure allows more accurate determinations in the normal range than do previous methods described and is convenient for clinical routine. Significant difference is found between the mean values of normal men and women, 3.9 units/L. for the former and 2.9 units/L. for the latter.

Abstract The determination of serum iron has been shown to be feasible by the use of a modified single-beam atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The effect of interfering substances is eliminated by the use of standards prepared in physiological concentrations of protein. Average percentage recovery of added iron was 97.9 with an over-all coefficient of variation of 1.6%. Disparities between samples due to the effect of unequal viscosities and flow rates were overcome by the integration of the record curve generated by a measured volume of sample. Comparison between the method presented and a colorimetric procedure gave a higher mean value and normal range for plasma quantitated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) were prepared by ways from primary materials of ZnCl2 and Na2S in water solution. Using the synthesized ZnS NCs, a polyclonal antibody-based ZnS-labelled immunosorbent assay for the determination of estriol (E3) was developed with atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) as a detector. An immunoaffinity column was applied to testify conjugation between antibody and ZnS NCs. The linear range for determination of estriol is 40.0~600.0 ng.mL-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 10.0 ng.mL-1. Some serum samples have been analyzed with satisfactory results which are in good agreement with those obtained using ELISA. This work suggests the potential application of NCs as biological probes and AAS as detector in nonisotopic immunoassay.

A longitudinal study of urinary 17-OHCS in 16 depressive patients showed mean values within the accepted normal range. There were no significant differences between pre-treatment and post-treatment values; only the female patients showed a tendency to have somewhat lower post-treatment levels. 17-KS output was measured in 18 depressive patients. The mean values were within the normal range. There was no significant difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment values although the female patients displayed a tendency towards somewhat lower levels following treatment. DHA and EA excretion were measured in 9 depressive patients. There was a very wide variance in the findings. There was no significant difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment levels. The significance of the above findings is discussed. It is considered that measurements of urinary excretion of corticosteroids in affective disorders constitute a limited source of information.

The aim of this study was to quantify the mineral content removed from primary teeth after using a chemomechanical system, called Papacarie®. Materials: Twenty human primary extracted molars were divided into two groups of 10 specimens each. Group A presented sound molars and Group B decayed molars on the occlusal or occlusal-proximal surface. In Group A, cavities in enamel and dentin with high speed drills were made before treatment. All teeth were treated with Papacárie® following the manufacturer's instructions. Each cavity was filled in with the product, allowing curing for 45 seconds, and then removed with the noncutting edge of the curette. The collected material was sent for laboratory analysis using atomic absorption spectrophotometry technique. Medians for each group were calculated through the application of Mann-Whitney and a statistically significant difference (p <0005) was observed. To verify the quantity of calcium removed from sound tissue, the median of calcium in group A (0.08% Ca) was compared with that of the gold standard (0.04% Ca), which showed a close correlation of values between them. Results indicate that the amount of calcium removed with Papacárie® affects only the carious component of teeth. This goes in accordance with the principles of cavity preparation and follows the current philosophy of preventive dentistry.

Abstract Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) was applied to the determination of serum calcium. A special diluent was developed to abolish the effect of absorption depressors. This made possible measurement of calcium in directly diluted serum samples without prior removal of any serum constituents. Values obtained by AAS on calcium oxalate precipitates from serum were identical with those found by the direct dilution technique.

ABSTRACT Objectives Psychoactive drugs are responsible for pathological changes in the mouth including dental caries, which most troublesome. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of heroin on several salivary factors which are involved in the oral health and their changes after methadone maintenance therapy (MMT). Materials and methods Forty patients with heroin abuse history, who referred to Imam Reza Hospital for MMT were included. Saliva sampling was carried out two times; at the first visit (time 1) and repeated 1 month after MMT (time 2). The saliva was analyzed immediately to evaluate the total volume, Ph, CPR, the Uric acid concentration, nitric oxide and antioxidant capacity. Results The mean values for saliva volume, pH, CRP, Uric acid, antioxidant and nitric oxide were 0.38 ± 0.14, 7.63 ± 1.22, 5.2 ± 2.3, 1.47 ± 0.8, 0.80 ± 0.23, and 0.26 ± 0.03, respectively at first visit and 0.34 ± 0.22, 7.37 ± 1.01, 6.1 ± 2.6, 2.18 ± 0.9, 0.74 ± 0.3 and 0.29 ± 0.08 after 1 month of MMT. These values are below the normal ranges; however, there was no significant difference between two times in term of saliva volume, pH and saliva component (p > 0.05). Conclusion Heroin addiction changed the effective salivary factors and therefore could negatively contribute to oral health. These factors were not return to the normal range after 1 month of MMT. Physicians should be informed about focusing on oral health in patients under MMT. Clinical significance Heroin addiction changed the effective salivary factors and these factors were not return to the normal range after 1 month of MMT. Studies have shown that cigarette smoking affects the accumulation of some heavy metals in certain tissues and metabolism of essential elements. The aim of the study was to determine the differences in the concentrations of cadmium in the blood and urine and zinc in the urine of smokers and ex-smokers in relation to non-smokers, and to determine the possible influence of cadmium concentration on zinc excretion as an essential element. The study included 106 subjects. Subjects were regular smokers (n=51), ex-smokers (n=38) and non-smokers (n=17). Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) with an electrothermal atomizer was used to determine cadmium. Zinc was determined by AAS with a flame atomizer. There was a significant difference in the values of cadmium in the blood between the groups: smokers and non-smokers (p<0.001), smokers and ex-smokers (p <0.001), and between ex-smokers and non-smokers (p = 0.045). There is a significant positive and strong correlation in the level of zinc and cadmium in urine per gram of creatinine, and as the level of cadmium increases, the level of zinc also increases (rho=0.781; p=0.001). The data indicate that cigarette smoking has been shown to be a factor that can increase cadmium levels to an extent that will significantly increase zinc excretion, or its increased loss.

Hemato-biochemical profiles have been used widely to identify the health problems associated with productive and reproductive disorders. The objective of this study was to set up a baseline hematological and serum biochemical values. The study was carried out in 50 lactating cross bred Jersey cattle of Kaski district ranging in age from 3-7 years. Non-pregnant, lactating, apparently healthy and stall-fed cattle were selected for sampling and these animals were regularly dewormed and vaccinated against common diseases. All the hematological parameters were determined on the same day of collection using auto analyzer. The samples were also tested for blood protozoans (Anaplasma, Babesia, Theleria and Trypanosoma), using thin and thick smears. The serum samples were collected in a sterile vial for serum biochemical analysis and preserved at -200C until used for the assays. All the hematological parameters were within the normal range. However, 2% of the total animals tested appeared Theleria positive. Eosinophil and basophils were within the normal range suggesting that the deworming was effective and there was no allergic reaction. Mineral profile particularly glucose (11.75±0.87) was found significantly (P<0.05) low. This suggests that cross Jersey cattle were prone to hypoglycemia related metabolic disorders and corrective measures should be employed for better production. The values obtained in this study within the range can be used cautiously as reference value at lactating stage of cross-bred Jersey cattle. Further detail study is needed to exacting the standard reference value for this breed of cattle.

Mucins are an important class of complex glycoproteins expressed by many epithelial cells and their malignant counterparts. The aim of this study was to determine the serum levels of MUC3 and mucin-like carcinoma-associated antigen (MCA) in patients with primary breast cancer and to analyze the possible relationships between these two mucins and the steroid receptor status. The preoperative basal serum levels of MUC3 (ELISA assay with monoclonal antibody 1143/B7) and MCA (EIA assay with anti-MCA mouse monoclonal antibody b-12) were determined in 44 patients with breast cancer while estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PgR) levels were measured by the dextran-coated charcoal method in the cytosol of neoplastic tissue. MUC3 was expressed in 43/44 serum samples while high MCA serum levels were found in 16/44 only; the mean values of both markers did not correlate with menopausal status, tumor size, nodal involvement or ER. The only significant difference observed was a lower median value of MCA in patients with small tumors (T1–T2). No statistically significant correlation between MUC3 and MCA, MUC3 and ER or MCA and ER was observed; a statistically significant direct correlation between MUC3 and PgR+ status and a statistically significant inverse correlation between MCA and PgR+ were observed. Our results suggest that further investigations are necessary to establish whether progesterone can modulate MUC3 and MCA expression in breast cancer.
