The research is aimed to describe the types of grammatical errors, especially the process of forming Arabic noun phrases (NP) done by students of Department of Arabic Language and Literature of State University for Islamic Studies Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, and to explain the factors that influence those errors. The data of this study is taken from the result of writing exam in the class of kitābah muhakkamah or 'academic formal writing' of the fifth semester. The method, which is used to describe the grammatical errors, especially the making process of Arabic NPs, is the method of error analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the frequency of errors in the process of forming the Arabic NPs, which happens repeatedly, is when the patterns of NP are noun+noun (N+N) and noun+adjective (N+Adj). The error of NP with a pattern of N+N happens when the article (al-) at head noun is used, while the error of NP with a pattern of N+Adj happens when the article (al-) at head noun, which has definite modifier, is omitted. The factors, which influence the making errors of Arabic NP, are grammatical factors. The grammatical factors are caused by the different rules between the Indonesian and Arabic NP. On the other hand, the process of language acquisition of second or foreign language makes these problems worse.

This research is aimed to describing the gramatical errors on the text that committed by the students of Arabic Language and Literature Department, Faculty of Language and Arts, State University of Jakarta. Grammatical errors in this case covering morphological errors and syntactic errors. Data obtained through an Arabic essay writing activities performed by 25 students and then the data were analyzed using the method of error analysis.   The results showed that 25 students essays founded 68 grammatical errors. These grammatical errors consist of 38 syntax errors and 30 morphological errors.   Grammatical errors made ​​by students can be caused by several factors such as the influence of the mother tongue / first, the influence of the second language being studied, as well as the influence of developmental errors.   Keywords:gramatical errors, morphological errors, syntactic errors, arabic essay

<p>Alternative learning strategies, in the concept of second language acquisition (SLA), concern more on the identification of second language students’ characteristic. One of the alternative learning strategies that will be discussed in this paper is about the role of native language (L1) with a demonstration of Papuan Malay language possessive pronouns and noun phrases in the context of teaching English as a foreign language (FL) in Jayapura, Papua. The discussion about the structure of Papuan Malay language possessive pronouns and noun phrases might give insight for second language (L2) teachers in Papua on making use their students’ L1 as a potential strategy to help them to increase their second language acquisition.</p>

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 did not only change the life of business, work, and state, but also people, and education, including Arabic education. These changes, give opportunities for any benefits, on the other hand it also provide challenges. For those who are unable to deal with it, they are going to be fail. This article described and analyzed the challenges of Arabic as the language for communication in Industrial Revolution 4.0. How does Islamic State University respond to the revolutionary changes in industry 4.0. The lovers, activists, educators, and the Arabic language users need to take a quick, precise, and well-prepared attitude. Therefore, the researchers explored data in the Graduate Program of IAIN Tulungagung as the campus of Da'wah and Civilization that use Arabic language as the main pillar in realizing the vision. The researchers used qualitative phenomenological approach. The findings showed that the students were not accustomed in applying Arabic, so they could not create the language environment yet. However, it has often been used in official events. It can be concluded that the Graduate Program of Arabic Language Department of IAIN Tulungagung is able to follow the industrial revolution 4.0 supported by some articles that have been published in both national and international journals.

Language as an object of linguistics studies has an important role in human life. Language and life is a phenomenon that can’t be released like two sides of a coin. Language is a symbol of sounds system arbitrarily used by humans to communicate between each other. As a system, the language has a systematic nature (berkaedah) and systemic (bersubsistem). One of the subsystems is phonology. Phonology as one field or level of study in linguistics were discussed related to everything about language sounds. The language sounds are categorized into two, namely phonetic and phonemic. Phonetics as a branch of phonology discusses relevant language sounds without affecting the meaning, while discussing about the sounds of language phonemes that affect meaning. This paper would like to study about the Arabic language phonology, in particular on phonemic. This study included within the scope of the al-Aswa> t, which is the science deals with the narrative of the language sounds, movement and acceptance. Before studying how to prepare the structure of a language and its meaning and so on, then it must first be familiar with the sounds of the language in it. Sounds of language that are must be known in advance for language learners (Arabic learners). Therefore, phonology becomes important to study in learning and language acquisition (foreign language). Thus, it becomes very important to understand the study of phonology or al-Aswa> t, in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding associated Arabic language sounds, which certainly every sound has its own meaning

Several studies in the recent past have proven that subtitling is undoubtedly beneficial in foreign language acquisition.1 This project aims to prove the same for a New Zealand context, a country where the scope of audio-visual translation is rather limited and among students who have had little to no exposure to subtitling audiovisual material. The current project is based upon two separate studies, one undertaken by Jennifer Lertola and Cristina Mariotti, the other by Jennifer Lertola and Laura Incalcaterra-McGloughlin.2 The project involved 23 second-year students of Italian at Victoria University of Wellington who, as part of their course work during their second semester of study, where tasked with subtitling the Italian comedy classic Il secondo tragico Fantozzi into English.

Abstract Vocabulary development can be achieved by helping the foreign learner of English to acquire productivity and non-productivity in English derivation. In addition, the English productive derivatives should be given special attention in teaching to and learning by native-Arabic speakers because the Arabic language is a language of derivation and it is highly productive. This paper tests how the adult native-Arabic speakers learning English as a foreign language acquire English productive and non-productive derivatives. This will be done by comparing productivity in standard written Arabic and standard written English through contrastive analysis. The concept of contrastive analysis (CA) is initially called upon the fact that Arabic is a language of productive derivation while English is a language of more than one source of word-formation; borrowing, compounding and derivation. Moreover, productivity in English is not high. Secondly, morphology is subject to avoidance phenomenon by foreign learners. Hence, the predictive value of CA and also its testing in this paper should be very helpful for English teachers to native-Arabic speakers learning English and other foreign learners, language acquisition researchers, applied linguists, methodologists and textbook-writers.

The paper focuses on Romance language acquisition through English acquired as the first foreign language. A conscious approach to relations between languages enables learners, who acquired certain knowledge, attitudes and skills while learning one language, to learn other languages more easily. Research is based on contrastive analysis of two Romance languages – French and Spanish – and their relations to English. Learning those two Romance languages was carried out through the knowledge of some principles of how languages function and are related to each other. The analysis of vocabulary and grammar focuses on similarities between the three mentioned languages, emphasising the level of intensity in similarity on one hand, and possible problems related to spelling, pronunciation and meaning on the other hand. The research supports the idea of language plurality in education, and the necessity to help learners construct and continuously broaden and deepen their own plurilingual competence. Keywords: pluringuialism; multilingualism; FREPA; contrastive analysis;

AbstractThis study investigates Japanese learners’ production of English relative constructions, focusing on the information preference of noun phrases in spoken discourse. The constructions of Japanese learners and of native speakers of English were extracted from a spoken corpus according to learners’ English proficiency levels. The information status (New, Given, and Identifiable) of head noun phrases modified by relative clauses were also examined. The results found that, in an attempt to keep spoken communication coherent, native speakers and learners of all levels prefer general grammatical and pragmatic configurations in their production of English relative constructions. This preference is called the Preferred Argument Structure (Du Bois 1987). However, Japanese learners and native speakers did not share the same preference of language-specific information status. The results suggest that first language information preference plays a crucial role in second language acquisition, especially during the early stages of acquisition. They also suggest that discoursal properties affect the mechanisms and motivations of relative clause constructions in second language acquisition.

The objective of this research is to acquire deep understanding of the developing syllabus of Arabic language’s productive competence based on content language integrated learning at Arabic language teaching department. Focus of this research is: the model of syllabus of Arabic language productive competence. This research was conducted from July 2015 until February 2016 .The research method used in this study is a research development with a qualitative approach to content. The approach used in analyzing the analysis of students need. The research instrument is the researcher herself who is equipped with table analysis. The result showed that Based on an analysis of documents of syllabus productive skills that are currently used in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, State University of Jakarta focusing on the themes that have been determined for each meeting. How syllabus like this had not yet shown the achievements of the expected learning, so that the study sought to develop a syllabus based on the needs of learners with the approach of the syllabus-based CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning).

The undergraduates of Bachelor of Arts Honours degree have to write a dissertation in their fields. When they write it, they have been facing challenges. Therefore, this research sought to investigate the challenges of writing a dissertation as a requirement of the specialisation Bachelor Degree in the Arabic Language among those who are speaking Tamil as a mother tongue and who learning Arabic as a foreign language. This research is a qualitative study through the descriptive methodology. The researchers selected 30 dissertations randomly from the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language, the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and analysed them. The review of the documents focuses on students’ abilities to write dissertations. Also, 25 students who submitted their dissertations were selected randomly to fill the questionnaire to reveal the challenges they faced. Writing a dissertation in a foreign or second language is difficult than writing in a native language. As pointed out in the previous sections, there are challenges in writing dissertations such as the influence of the Tamil language, Lack of knowledge in research writing, Selecting a new topic, Lack of reading, Experience of using the software. At the same time, findings of the review of the dissertations reveal that language fluency and data analysis are the common errors observed in the dissertations.
