Platinum Reduction Study on Pt/C Electro-catalysts for PEMFC

Platinum reduction on Pt/C catalysts was studied on samples prepared by the impregnation method using different Pt precursors and reducing agents such as ethanol, sodium borohydride and ethanol-UV light (photo-assisted reduction), in order to compare the efficiency of the different reducing agents. The influence of the reduction level of the platinum species on the electrochemical behavior of these catalysts has been determined. The catalysts were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and linear and cyclic voltammetry. The results show that the reduction level depends mainly on the platinum precursor. Moreover, it was found that the higher electrochemical activity was found using catalysts reduced with ethanol, whereas by using NaBH4 as the reducing agent, the total reduction of the platinum precursor is very difficult in same synthesis conditions. The analysis of the XPS results shows that samples reduced with ethanol presented the lower PtOx/Pt reduction ratio.

Intense photoluminescence (PL) has been observed at room temperature from the polycrystalline SiC samples prepared from carbon-saturated Si melt at a temperature ranging from 1500 to 1650°C. Composition and structure of the samples have been confirmed by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. PL measurements with 325 nm UV light excitation revealed that the room temperature PL spectrum of the samples consists of 3 luminescent bands, the peak energies of which are 2.38 eV, 2.77 eV and 3.06 eV, respectively. The 2.38 eV band is much stronger than the others. It is suggested that some extrinsic PL mechanisms associated with defect or interface states would be responsible to the intensive PL observed at room temperature.

During screening of the phase space using KOH and 1-methyl-4-aza-1-azoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane hydroxide (1-methyl-DABCO) under hydrothermal zeolite synthesis conditions, K-paracelsian was synthesized. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ex situ powder X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a material that is compositionally closely related to the mineral microcline and structurally closely related to the mineral paracelsian, both of which are feldspars. In contrast to the feldspars, K-paracelsian contains intrazeolitic water corresponding to one molecule per cage. In the case of K-paracelsian it might be useful to consider it a link between feldspars and zeolites. It was also shown that K-paracelsian can be described as the simplest endmember of a family of dense double-crankshaft zeolite topologies. By applying the identified building principle, a number of known zeolite topologies can be constructed. Furthermore, it facilitates the construction of a range of hypothetical small-pore structures that are crystallo-chemically healthy, but which have not yet been realized experimentally.

Synthesis of a rutile-type lead-substituted tin oxide with (110) face was investigated. The characterization was performed by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area measurements. The homogeneous rutile-type lead-substituted tin oxide was obtained until 4.1 mol% of tin was substituted with lead. The surface of obtained oxide had a homogeneously lead-substituted (110) face.

Reduced graphene oxide–epoxy grafted poly(styrene-co-acrylate) composites (GESA) were prepared by anchoring different amount of epoxy modified poly(styrene-co-acrylate) (EPSA) onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets through π–π electrostatic attraction. The GESA composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The anti-corrosion properties of rGO/EPSA composites were evaluated by electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in hydroxyl-polyacrylate coating, and the results revealed that the corrosion rate was decreased from 3.509 × 10−1 to 1.394 × 10−6 mm/a.

ABSTRACTPu-bearing zirconolite and pyrochlore based ceramics were prepared by melting under oxidizing and reducing conditions at 1550 °C. 239Pu content in the samples ranged between ∼10 and ∼50 wt.%. Phase composition of the ceramics and Pu partitioning were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive system (SEM/EDS). Major phases in the samples were found to be the target zirconolite and pyrochlore as well as a cubic fluorite structure oxide. Normally the Pu content in the Pu host phases was 10–12 wt.%. This corresponds to the Pu content recommended for matrices for immobilization of excess weapons plutonium. At higher Pu content (up to 50 wt.%) additional phases, such as a PuO2-based cubic fluorite-structured solid solution, perovskite, and rutile were found.

Layers of cerium dioxide nanoparticles were prepared on titanium by electrodeposition with organic solution. Three concentrations of cerium ions were used at 31.6 V. The organic solution was isobutanol and titanium foils were used as anodes and cathodes. Currents were monitored during the electrodeposition. Deposition times ranged from 0.5 to 8 h. Deposited Deposited layers were calcined at 700 K for 30 min. The morphology and composition of the deposited layers were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As-prepared and calcined deposition layers were assayed to be cerium dioxide. The average crystallite size increased from 4 to 7 nm through calcination at 700 K. Sizes of calcined cerium oxide agglomerates were ranging from 73 to 146 nm for 30 min deposition and 209 to 262 nm for 8 h deposition. The electrodeposition efficiencies of 0.5 h deposition at three concentrations were measured to be highest.

Hexagonal flower-like CdS nanostructures were successfully synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method with thiourea as sulfur source. By combining the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the structural and morphological characterizations of the products were performed. The photocatalytic activity of CdS nanostructures had been tested by degradation of Rhodamine B (RB) under UV light compared to commercial CdS powders, which indicated that the as-syntherized CdS nanostructures exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of RB. The possible growth mechanism of CdS nanostructures was proposed in the end.

The properties of nanomaterials usually depend on their microstructures, the same material of different microstructures could be used for various applications. However, most devices could only synthesize a single microstructure, so it is meaningful that the different microstructures were synthesized by one method. In our study, electrospinning was applied to fabricate ZnO nanofibers and nanoparticles. In this approach, Zn(Ac)/PVP composite fibers of different component ratio were synthesized by electrospinning method which was subsequently calcined and formed ZnO nanofibers and nanoparticles. The microstructure, chemical composition and gas sensing were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and WS-60A gas sensing measurement system. The synthesis mechanisms of ZnO nanofibers and nanoparticles were discussed in detail.

A simple method for obtaining ZnO-Fe3O4 nanocomposites using solid-state reaction Zn + 3Fe2O3 ZnO + 2Fe3O4 is suggested. An analysis of the characteristics and properties of ZnO-Fe3O4 nanocomposites was carried out by a combination of structural and physical methods (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, Mössbauer measurements, X-ray fluorescent analysis, and magnetic measurements). The magnetization of the hybrid ZnO-Fe3O4 films is equal to 440 emu/cm3. The resulting Fe3O4 nanoparticles are surrounded by a ZnO shell and have sizes ranging between 20 and 40 nm.
