NONLINEAR FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF FRP STRENGTHENED RC BEAMS

A simple, accurate and efficient finite element model is developed in ANSYS for numerical modelling of the nonlinear structural behavior of FRP strengthened RC beams under static loading in this paper. Geometric nonlinearity and material non-linear properties of concrete and steel rebar are accounted for this model. Concrete and steel reinforcement are modelled using Solid 65 element and Link 180 element, and FRP and adhesive are modelled using Shell 181element and Solid 45 element. Concrete is modelled using Nitereka and Neal’s model for compression, and isotropic and linear elastic model before cracking with strength gradually reducing to zero after cracking for tension. For steel reinforcement, the elastic perfectly plastic material model is used. FRPs are assumed to be linearly elastic until rupture and epoxy is assumed to be linearly elastic. The new FE model is validated by comparing the computed results with those obtained from experimental studies.

A new simple, efficient and accurate finite element model denoted as FEM-B is developed for the analysis of structural behavior of FRP strengthened RC beams with bond-slip effect. Geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinear properties of concrete and steel rebar are accounted for this model. Concrete, steel, FRP and adhesive are modelled as Solid 65, Link 180, Shell181 and Solid 45 respectively. Concrete is modelled using Nitereka and Neal’s model for compression, isotropic and linear elastic model before cracking for tension and strength gradually reduces to zero after cracking, whereas steel is assumed to be elastic perfectly plastic material. The material of FRP is considered to be linearly elastic until rupture, and adhesive is assumed to be linearly elastic. The bond slip between concrete, adhesive and FRP is based on the bilinear law, which is modelled using spring element Combin 39.The developed new finite element model FEM-B is validated against experimental results, and demonstrates to be effective for the structural analysis of FRP strengthened RC beams.

Finite element analysis has been regarded as an effective research method for analyzing the loosening failure of bolted joints under vibration. However, there exist some factors, which influence the accuracy and reliability of loosening results, thus determining the explanations of the loosening mechanism. In this study, a 3D finite element model of a typical bolted joint was built to investigate the effects of several different factors on the loosening under transverse vibration loading. These influencing factors include preload generation, vibration parameter, and material model. Based on the simulation results, it was found that applying the method of pretension element to generate preload instead of the actual method of torque was reliable and efficient. For the vibration parameter, it showed that the decrease rate in preload was higher for a larger vibration amplitude. But once the bearing surface reached complete slip, the loosening rate would keep constant. This was because the thread surface at that time reached a sticking state. Vibration frequency was proved to have no effect on the loosening behavior. This result demonstrated that the quasi-static assumption for vibration frequency was reasonable. Additionally, it also indicated that plastic material models only affected the preload loss in the initial several vibration cycles and had no influence on the loosening rate of preload after several vibration cycles. Finally, experiments were conducted to confirm qualitatively the results obtained based on finite element analysis.

This work presents an extensive analysis of the properties of distributed vibration absorbers (DVAs) and their effectiveness in controlling the sound radiation from the base structure. The DVA acts as a distributed mass absorber consisting of a thin metal sheet covering a layer of acoustic foam (porous media) that behaves like a distributed spring-mass-damper system. To assess the effectiveness of these DVAs in controlling the vibration of the base structures (plate) a detailed finite elements model has been developed for the DVA and base plate structure. The foam was modeled as a poroelastic media using 8 node hexahedral elements. The structural (plate) domain was modeled using 16 degree of freedom plate elements. Each of the finite element models have been validated by comparing the numerical results with the available analytical and experimental results. These component models were combined to model the DVA. Preliminary experiments conducted on the DVAs have shown an excellent agreement between the results obtained from the numerical model of the DVA and from the experiments. The component models and the DVA model were then combined into a larger FE model comprised of a base plate with the DVA treatment on its surface. The results from the simulation of this numerical model have shown that there has been a significant reduction in the vibration levels of the base plate due to DVA treatment on it. It has been shown from this work that the inclusion of the DVAs on the base plate reduces their vibration response and therefore the radiated noise. Moreover, the detailed development of the finite element model for the foam has provided us with the capability to analyze the physics behind the behavior of the distributed vibration absorbers (DVAs) and to develop more optimized designs for the same.

The present paper, describes a transient translating elasto-plastic thermo-mechanical finite element model to study 2-D frictional rolling contact. Frictional two-dimensional contact is simulated by repeatedly translating a non-uniform thermo-mechanical distribution across the surface of an elasto-plastic half space. The half space is represented by a two dimensional finite element mesh with appropriate boundaries. Calculations are for an elastic-perfectly plastic material and the selected thermo-physical properties are assumed to be temperature independent. The paper presents temperature variations, stress and plastic strain distributions and deformations. Residual tensile stresses are observed. The magnitude and depth of these stresses depends on 1) the temperature gradients and 2) the magnitudes of the normal and tangential tractions.

Abstract This paper presents a finite element mesh generation algorithm (PREPAT) designed to automatically discretize two-dimensional domains. The mesh generation algorithm is a mapping scheme which creates a uniform isoparametric FE model based on a pre-partitioned domain of the component. The proposed algorithm provides a faster and more accurate tool in the pre-processing phase of a Finite Element Analysis (FEA). A primary goal of the developed mesh generator is to create a finite element model requiring only essential input from the analyst. As a result, the generator code utilizes only a sketch, based on geometric primitives, and information relating to loading/boundary conditions. These conditions represents the constraints that are propagated throughout the model and the available finite elements are uniformly mapped in the resulting sub-domains. Relative advantages and limitations of the mesh generator are discussed. Examples are presented to illustrate the accuracy, efficiency and applicability of PREPAT.

This paper discusses the behaviour of hollow tubes with axisymmetric internal projections subjected to combined axial and internal pressure loading. Predictions from an extensive elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analysis are presented for a typical geometry and a range of loading combinations, using a simplified bilinear elastic-perfectly plastic material model. The axial loading case, previously analysed, is extended to cover the additional effect of internal pressure. All the predicted stress and strain data are found to depend on the applied loading conditions. The results are normalized with respect to material properties and can therefore be applied to geometrically similar components made from other materials, which can be represented by the same material models.

Abstract Today, gear designs with asymmetric tooth profiles offer essential solutions in reducing tooth root stresses of gears. Although numerical, analytical, and experimental studies are carried out to calculate the bending stresses in gears with asymmetric tooth profiles a standard or a simplified equation or empirical statement has not been encountered in the literature. In this study, a novel bending stress calculation procedure for gears with asymmetric tooth profiles is developed using both the DIN3990 standard and the finite element method. The bending stresses of gears with symmetrical profile were determined by the developed finite element model and was verified by comparing the results with the DIN 3990 standard. Using the verified finite element model, by changing the drive side pressure angle between 20° and 30° and the number of teeth between 18 and 100, 66 different cases were examined and the bending stresses in gears with asymmetric profile were determined. As a result of the analysis, a new asymmetric factor was derived. By adding the obtained asymmetric factor to the DIN 3390 formula, a new equation has been derived to be used in tooth bending stresses of gears with asymmetric profile. Thanks to this equation, designers will be able to calculate tooth bending stresses with high precision in gears with asymmetric tooth profile without the need for finite element analysis.

Abstract The strength and stability of the lumbar spine are determined not only by the bone and muscles, but also by the visco-elastic structures and the interplay between the different components of the spine, such as ligaments, capsules, annulus fibrosis, and articular cartilage. In this paper we present a non-linear three-dimensional Finite Element model of the lumbar spine. Specifically, a three-dimensional FE model of the L4-5 one-motion segment/2 vertebrae was developed. The cortical shell and the cancellous bone of the vertebral body were modeled as 3D isoparametric eight-nodal elements. Finite element models of spinal injuries with fixation devices are also developed. The deformations across the different sections of the spine are observed under the application of axial compression, flexion/extension, and lateral bending. The developed FE models provided input to both the fixture design and experimental studies.

The accuracy of a finite element model for design and analysis of a metal forging operation is limited by the incorporated material model’s ability to predict deformation behavior over a wide range of operating conditions. Current rheological models prove deficient in several respects due to the difficulty in establishing complicated relations between many parameters. More recently, artificial neural networks (ANN) have been suggested as an effective means to overcome these difficulties. In the present work, a previously developed ANN with the ability to determine flow stresses based on strain, strain rate, and temperature is incorporated with finite element code. Utilizing this linked approach, a preliminary model for forging an aluminum wheel is developed. This novel method, along with a conventional approach, is then measured against the forging process as it is currently performed in actual production.

This paper discusses the modeling and analysis of a novel audio subwoofer system for automotive applications using the automobile windshield glass. The use of a piezo-electric actuator coupled with a mechanical amplifier linked to a large glass panel provides a highly efficient method of producing sound. The proposed subwoofer system has the advantage over existing conventional systems of not only reducing the weight of the automobile, but also a significant power savings resulting in an increase of expected fuel economy. Among various design challenges, the glass-sealing design is of huge importance, as it affects the system dynamic response and so the output sound characteristics. The main goal in this manuscript is to evaluate different glass-sealing design configurations by providing a comprehensive Finite Element model of the system. To do so, a comprehensive, yet simplified FE model is developed, and experimental studies are performed in the component level to fine-tune and verify the model. Harmonic response of the system for each sealing configuration design is obtained in the frequency range of 0–200 Hz, and the results are compared and discussed. The finite element model is also beneficial in preliminary design of other components as well as the exciter placement, and predicting the performance of the overall system.
