Strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is often necessary due to the change of using or to enhance the strength of deteriorated existing RC structures attributed to aging and environmental effects. Interfacial bond between the existing RC member and the strengthening layer is known to be the main factor for any successful strengthening technique. This study investigates the efficiency of utilizing high strength cementitious connectors in preventing the debonding of textile reinforced mortar (TRM) strengthening layer from substrate concrete of RC beams. An experimental program is developed to investigate the effect of strength of mortars and the distribution of cementitious connectors on the behavior of the strengthened beams. TRM comprising eight and sixteen textile basalt fiber layers were utilized in these experiments. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of cementitious connectors on the failure mode of strengthened beams by means of controlling the debonding of TRM. The increase in cracking and ultimate loads is demonstrated due to the strengthening of RC beams using TRM.

High-strength cementitious materials such as high-performance concrete are extensively used for retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The effectiveness of these materials is increased when mixed with steel fibers. A commonly used technique for strengthening and repair of RC beams consists of applying high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete jackets around the beam perimeter. This paper investigates the jacketing method for repairing severely damaged RC beams. Four 2 m (6 ft 63/4 in.) long rectangular RC beams, 200 × 300 mm (8 ×12 in.) were initially cast and loaded until failure based on three-point bending tests. The four beams were then repaired by thickening the sides of the damaged RC beams using a commercially available high-strength shrinkage grout with and without steel fibers. Strain and deformation were recorded in the damaged and repaired beams to compare structural performance. It is shown that the flexural strength of the repaired beams is increased and the crack pattern under loading is improved, proving that the proposed repair method can restore the resistance capacity of RC beams despite the degree of damage. A method for repair is proposed and an analytical investigation is also performed to understand the structural behavior of the repaired beams based on different thickening configurations.

Steel Reinforced Grout (SRG) materials are generating considerable interest as strengthening system of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. They are finding increasing use in several civil engineering applications mainly due to the advantages they offer over traditional material such as high strength to weight ratio, ease of application, durability and low price. This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation carried out on SRG shear strengthened RC beams and gives evidence of the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) effectiveness as a measurement system. The tests performed had two main objectives: (i) assess the effectiveness of continuous and discontinuous U-wrapped jackets comprising a different number of layers and strips; (ii) assess the shear crack distribution during the tests by means of the DIC measurements. The results confirmed that reinforcing RC beams with SRG jackets can increase the load-bearing capacity; when the beam was reinforced with a continuous two-layered SRG strip, an increase of 84% was observed (compared to the unreinforced beam). The Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDT) measurements validated the results obtained by means of the DIC.

Reinforced concrete (RC) structures necessitate strengthening for various reasons. These include ageing, deterioration of materials due to environmental effects, trivial initial design and construction, deficiency of maintenance, the advancement of design loads, and functional changes. RC structures strengthening with the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been used extensively during the last few decades due to their advantages over steel reinforcement. This paper introduces an experimental approach for flexural strengthening of RC beams with Externally-Side Bonded Reinforcement (E-SBR) using CFRP fabrics. The experimental program comprises eight full-scale RC beams tested under a four-point flexural test up to failure. The parameters investigated include the main tensile steel reinforcing ratio and the width of CFRP fabrics. The experimental outcomes show that an increase in the tensile reinforcement ratio and width of the CFRP laminates enhanced the first cracking and ultimate load-bearing capacities of the strengthened beams up to 141 and 174%, respectively, compared to the control beam. The strengthened RC beams exhibited superior energy absorption capacity, stiffness, and ductile response. The comparison of the experimental and predicted values shows that these two are in good agreement.

 The use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets is becoming a widely accepted solution for strengthening and repairing rein-forced concrete (RC) structures. To date, the behavior of RC beams, strengthened with 60˚ and 45˚ inclined CFRP sheets, has not clearly explained. An experimental program is proposed in this paper to investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with CFRP sheets. CFRP sheets were epoxy bonded to the tension face to enhance the flexural strength of beams inducing different orientation angles of 0˚, 45˚, 60˚ and 90˚ with the beam longitudinal axis. The study shows that strengthening RC beams with CFRP sheets is highly influenced by the orientation angle of the sheets. The orientation angle plays a key role in changing the crack pattern and hence the failure mode. The influence of CFRP sheets was adequate on increasing the flexural strength of RC beams but the ductility of the beams was reduced. The best performance was obtained when strengthening RC beam obliquely using 45˚ inclined CFRP sheets where the specimen experienced additional deflection and strength of 56% and 12% respectively and the reduction in its ductility was the least. It is recom-mended to strengthen RC beams, which are weak in flexure, using 45˚ inclined CFRP sheets.

The exact effect that each of the basic shear design parameters exerts on the shear capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams without shear reinforcement (Vc) is still unclear. Previous research on this subject often yielded contradictory results, especially for reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) beams. Furthermore, by simply adding Vc and the contribution of stirrups Vs to calculate the ultimate shear capacity Vu, current shear design practice assumes that the addition of stirrups does not alter the effect of shear design parameters on Vc. This paper investigates the validity of such a practice. Data on 656 reinforced concrete beams were used to train an artificial neural network model to predict the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams and evaluate the performance of several existing shear strength calculation procedures. A parametric study revealed that the effect of shear reinforcement on the shear strength of RC beams decreases at a higher reinforcement ratio. It was also observed that the concrete contribution to shear resistance, Vc, in RC beams with shear reinforcement is noticeably larger than that in beams without shear reinforcement, and therefore most current shear design procedures provide conservative predictions for the shear strength of RC beams with shear reinforcement.Key words: analysis, artificial intelligence, beam depth, compressive strength, modeling, shear span, shear strength.

In this study, experimental research is carried out to assess the flexural performance of RC beams strengthened with different amount of CFRP laminates at the tension face. Twelve rectangular RC beams were fabricated and three are un-strengthened and used as reference beams and the remaining nine are strengthened with different amount of CFRP varying from single to triple layers and all are tested to failure under three points bending test. The increase of ultimate strength provided by the bonded CFRP laminates is assessed and failure modes is identified and compared to the un-strengthened RC beams. The results indicated that the flexural capacity of the beams was significantly improved as the amount of the laminates increases that ranged from 20% to 52% increased for single to triple layers laminates. It is concluded that the attachment of CFRP laminates has substantial influence on the performance of CFRP strengthened RC beams. Based on the observed results, recommendations are made that externally application of CFRP laminates can be used for a significant enhancement of the strength deficient RC beams in increasing the ultimate load carrying capacity. Debonding problems of externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets in flexurally FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams have been a concern and a research challenge since their application of this strengthening technique. Intermediate crack induced debonding is the most common failure mode which is that the debonding initiates at the critical flexural-shear or flexural cracks and propagates towards the direction of moment decrease. To mitigate debonding failure, most Codes and proposed models take the method by limiting the allowable tensile strain in FRP laminates. This paper presents experimental tests of concrete beams flexurally strengthened with externally bonded CFRP sheets to investigate debonding initiation and tensile strain of FRP laminates. The allowable tensile strain of FRP sheets in flexurally FRP-strengthened RC beams proposed by prevalent Code provisions and models was assessed based on the data obtained from experimental programs. It has beenshown that the allowable tensile strains provided by these provisions and models have a great difference with that of experimental results and exhibit a high level of dispersion. Furthermore, the FRP laminates of most tested RC beams were debonded before reaching the proposed allowable tensile strain. The Code provisions and models are inadequate to effectively prevent intermediate crack induced debonding failure in flexurally FRP-strengthened RC members. This is known to be a critical issue in engineering design and application of RC beams flexurally strengthened by FRP sheets.

Different FPR post-strengthening techniques have been developed and applied in existing structures aiming to increase their load capacity. Most of the FRP systems used nowadays consist of carbon fibers embedded in epoxy matrices (CFRP). Regardless of the advantages and the good results shown by the CFRP post-strengthen technique, experimental studies show that, in most cases, the failure of post-strengthened structures is premature. Aiming to better use the tensile strength of the carbon fiber strips used as post-strengthening material, the application of prestressed CFRP strips started to be investigated. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of the composite prestressing in the performance of the CFRP post strengthening technique. The experimental program was based on flexural tests on post-strengthened reinforced concrete beams subjected to static - part 1 and cyclic - part 2 loading. Experimental results allowed the analysis of the quality and shortcomings of post-strengthen system studied, which resulted in valuable considerations about the analyzed post-strengthened beams.

Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) is adopted widely in recent years in many countries to rehabilitate or strengthen structural elements such as reinforced concrete (RC) beams because it is cheap and it has stellar mechanical performance. By activating the finite element (FE) simulation, the present research submits an extensive study on the strengthening and rehabilitation of damaged full-scale RC beams due to corrosions in the main reinforcement caused by BFRP sheets. Different parameters were taken into consideration such as corrosion grade, BFRP wrapping schemes, and the number of layers. The flexural performance of the models that build up as the control model and the damaged and the repaired methodologies by BFRP that are adopted and tested by others under the effects of four-point static loadings were also underwent examination. The full interaction at BFRP-concrete interface and the full bonding between sheets presupposed were investigated for all models. The numerical analysis findings were compared with the experimental measurements and found to be in good agreement. The current numerical analysis proved that the ultimate load rised by 14.8% in spite of 20% corrosion in the flexural steel rebar under eight layers of BFRP composite and bottom wrapping mode. In addition, under all strategies of wrapping schemes, the findings also indicated that the deflection ductility index noticeably reduced for RC beams with BFRP composites compared to the control beam. Finally, all the results of midspan deflection, crack patterns, and strain response of the composite system were analysed and discussed briefly.
