<p class="042abstractstekst">The aim of this study was to study the impact of crop load on the yield and grape quality of ‘Merlot’ and ‘Vranac’ (<em>Vitis vinifera</em> L.) in Trebinje vineyard. The crop load levels studied in this trial were 9 buds (V1) and 12 buds (V2) per vine at each variety trained on Lenz-Moser bilateral cordon system. The impact was determined by measurements of yield per vine and grape quality characterized by the contents of total soluble solids, titratable acidity, total phenolics, total flavonoids and by total antioxidant capacity. The measured parameters of grape quality of ‘Merlot’ and ‘Vranac’ were not influenced significantly by crop load levels. V2, compared to the V1, showed the potential for increasing grape yield only for Merlot variety under experimental conditions. The results of this study also showed a positive correlation between total phenolics/flavonoids and total antioxidant capacity of grape berries in both varieties, regardless of crop loads applied.</p>

The native Anisocapparis speciosa fruits from Gran Chaco Ecoregion, they grow wild throughout this territory, their edible pulp and seeds are highly appreciated by the indigenous populations that inhabit it, in addition to other uses with medicinal properties attributed by ethnobotanicals knowledge, but there are no data on the composition of these regional fruits and their potential applications. The aims of the present work were to analyze the pulp and seeds composition of fruits in the ripe state, and the antioxidant potential in different stages of maturity. The proximal composition, minerals content, vitamin C and soluble solids were carried out according to official AOAC methodologies. The total phenolics compounds (TPC) by the Folin Ciocalteau method and the total antioxidant capacity by means of the inhibition of the radical ABTS were evaluated. The main components in pulp and seeds were carbohydrates and dietary fiber. The ripe pulp has a good content of vitamin C (20 mg/100g). The content of TPC and total antioxidant capacity (ABTS radical scavenging) was higher in pulp than in the seeds, in immature stages. The Anisocapparis speciosa fruits can represent a good source of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, Mg and vitamin C in the diet of regional populations. The pulp and seeds are sources of natural antioxidants. Future studies on post-harvest, storage and processing methods will be necessary to enhance its use and re-valorization within the Food Security framework.

The haskap has been successfully cultivated in many geographical zones in Canada. We investigated whether the latitude has any impact on the anthocyanin accumulation and total antioxidant capacity in the haskap berry. The measured quality attributes were compared with that of the blueberry. Haskap ‘Aurora’ berries were collected from Yukon, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia in Canada, and blueberries were collected from Nova Scotia. Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G), the most abundant anthocyanin of haskap berry, the total anthocyanins, the total polyphenols, the soluble solids (°Brix), the pH value, the total antioxidant capacity, and the moisture content were determined. The results revealed that the total anthocyanin, total phenolic content, and antioxidant capacity of the haskap range between 88 to 273 mg C3GE/100 g fresh weight (FW), 256 to 442 mg GAE/100 g of FW, and 27 to 52 µmol TE/g FW, respectively. The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS) analysis revealed that the C3G contained in the haskap berry is highly dependent on the harvest stage. Among the samples, the haskap berry harvested on July 19, 2019, from the Yukon had the highest C3G content. Interestingly, the total anthocyanin content of the haskap berry is comparable to that of the lowbush blueberry, but higher than the highbush blueberry. A systematic multi-year experiment employing many cultivars and growing locations is recommended to better understand the latitude effect.

ABSTRACT Aim To assess and correlate the level of stress to the total antioxidant capacity of saliva of university exam-going students studying at KLE Vishwanath Katti Institute of Dental Sciences, Belagavi, Karnataka, India, on the day of examination (stressed condition) and in the postexamination period (nonstressed condition). Materials and Methods Saliva samples of 30 students evaluated by the perceived stress scale on both the day of examination and in the postexamination period were collected and labeled as group I (day of examination) and group II (postexamination period). The total antioxidant capacity was assessed using the spectrophotometric assay based on the molar absorption coefficient of the phosphomolybdenum complex. The correlation between the level of stress and the antioxidant capacity was done using Spearman's correlation test, and the mean values obtained with respect to the two groups were evaluated using Mann–Whitney U test. Results The total antioxidant capacity was lower on the day of examination than in the postexamination period (p = 0.001). As the stress level increases, the total antioxidant capacity decreases. Conclusion Total antioxidant capacity of saliva can serve as an effective marker of stress. Thus, supplementation with antioxidants routinely and especially during periods of stress may be beneficial. Clinical significance Present day life is full of targets, necessities, and frustrations. For many people, stress has become a way of life. Stress is not always detrimental. Stress within your comfort zone helps you compete, motivates you, and can even keep you secure. But when stress becomes overwhelming, it damages your well-being, relationships, and quality of life. Thus, managing and diagnosing stress is important. One hundred and forty-seven sorghum samples, grown in 2015 and 2017, were used to build different near infrared spectroscopic calibration models able to predict total antioxidant capacity, total phenolics, total flavonoids and condensed tannins content. Samples were separated into calibration and validation sets using a nearest neighbours algorithm. The r2pred values ranged from 0.84 (condensed tannins) to 0.95 (total phenolics), whereas the Ratio of Performance to Deviation (RPD) values ranged from 1.9 (total flavonoids) to 3.0 (total phenolics). Comparison of prediction error estimates highlighted the best models with significant differences. Model robustness was tested through a reduction of sample numbers in the calibration set; the highest robustness was found for total antioxidant capacity and total flavonoids. In addition, a partial least squares discriminant analysis model to screen the samples for their tannins level was developed and resulted in good performance; it should be useful to select tannin-free genotypes for the food industry. These models could be used for rapid screening of sorghum breeding genotypes with high antioxidant compounds.

This study aimed to determine the impact of sesame meal, selenium (Se), and vitamin E (VitE) on goats’ oxidative status. Thirty mid-lactation crossbred goats were divided into five homogeneous groups, and were fed 1 kg of alfalfa hay and 1.2 kg of concentrates daily. The control group (C) received a basal diet. In the concentrates of the treated groups, 10% of the soybean meal was replaced by sesame meal and no extra VitE or Se (SM), or an extra 60 mg of VitE (SME), or 0.1 mg organic Se (SMSe), or their combination (60 mg VitE and 0,1 mg organic Se/kg of concentrate (SMESe). In the plasma of the goats, the dietary treatments did not affect glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione transferase, catalase, superoxide dismutase activities, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, or the total antioxidant capacity. A reduction and a trend for lower protein carbonyls content was found in goats fed SM (p = 0.03) and SME (p = 0.06) compared to SMESe. In the milk, the lactoperoxidase activity decreased with SMSe and SMESe. A numerical decrease in the total antioxidant capacity and an increase in the MDA content in the milk of the SMESe group compared with the other treated groups was found. In mid-lactation goats, SM improves the oxidative status of both the organism and the milk.

Ripe fruit of strawberry, raspberry, and highbush and lowbush blueberries were stored at 0, 10, 20, or 30 °C for up to 8 days. Total phenolic and anthocyanin content was measured at regular intervals during the storage period as well as the total antioxidant capacity, using the method of Cao et al. (Clin. Chem. 1995, 41/12 1739 1744). There were significant differences in all parameters among the species, and after storage. Across all species and storage treatments, the antioxidant capacity was correlated with the content of phenolics (R = 0.77) and anthocyanins (R = 0.85). Both species of blueberry had more than twice the antioxidant capacity of either raspberry or strawberry; antioxidant capacity of the highbush and low-bush blueberries did not change during storage. During storage at temperatures greater than 0 °C, anthocyanin content of raspberries and strawberries increased substantially, and this increase was accompanied by an increase in total antioxidant capacity. Since dietary antioxidants such as anthocyanin flavonoids have been suggested to have positive health benefits, postharvest anthocyanin formation may have a desirable effect on the health quality of certain fruit.
