This article outlines potential pros and cons of a future European regulation of proxy advisory firms, as set forth in the Commission’s Proposal for a Directive amending Directive 2007/36/EC. After summarizing criticisms concerning the proxy advisory industry, and findings regarding its de facto influence on investors’ voting conduct both in the US and in the European context, the article adverts to why the power of proxy advisors appears to be overestimated. Uncertainty on the status quo of the industry’s actual impact on key decisions in listed companies, as well as costs associated with a regulation, need to be considered for assessing the suitability of the rules drafted to ensure adequate levels of independence and quality of voting recommendations. While transparency rules may be preferred to stricter legal constraints or requirements in a first stage, possible shortcomings of the Draft Directive exist that may undermine its effectiveness. Analyzing the amendments to the Proposal adopted by the European Parliament, and the Council’s Presidency compromise text, may suggest a preferable approach as regards single rules still making their way through the European legislative process.

Purpose – This study aims to ascertain the trends and changes of how academic libraries market and deliver information literacy (IL) on the web. Design/methodology/approach – The author compares the findings from two separate studies that scanned the Web sites for IL-related activities in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Findings – Academic libraries intensified their efforts to promote and deliver IL on the web between 2009 and 2012. There was a significant increase in IL-related activities on the web in the three-year period. Practical implications – The findings describe the status quo and changes in IL-related activities on the libraries’ Web sites. This information may help librarians to know what they have been doing and if there is space for improvement. Originality/value – This is the only study that spans three years in measuring the progress librarians made in marketing and delivering IL on the Web.

Although out of office, Commonwealth supporters won the 1993 status plebiscite.

The objective of this research is to examine the influence of outsourcing on financial performance and competitive priories of Malaysian SMEs. A data sample of 100 SMEs was analyzed to examine these relationships. The analysis was conducted via Partial Least Squares. Based on the findings, while outsourcing has significant influence of SMEs financial performance in Malaysian context, outsourcing activities do not have an impact on competitive priorities. Outsourcing approach emphasizing on the establishment of core competitive advantage, allows Malaysian SMEs to get the numerous benefits such as overall sales growth, market share, net profit, return on investment, and financial liquidity.


Social capital has been proven in many studies to correlate with economic development and increment in standards of living in a collective manner. This chapter presents a brief description regarding social capital and micro-enterprises that narrowly focuses on the relationship between social capital theory and entrepreneurship. The chapter further portrays the varied dimensions of social capital followed by the status of social capital from the Malaysian perspective. Finally, the chapter ends with a discussion on the effect of social capital on competitive advantage, which has been presumed to be the most important aspect for micro-enterprises.

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the status quo and discuss the interfaces and articulations between the two constructs: entrepreneurship and social development. Thus, this chapter aims to analyze the characteristics of publications related to the themes of entrepreneurship and social development from 1996 to 2016. The methodology used was descriptive research bibliometrics. The research was conducted using the web of science (WoS) database of the ISI web of knowledge, with a total of 1893 articles selected. The survey results showed that the year with the highest number of publications was 2016 (446), followed by the year 2015 (330). Further, the fields of social and behavioral sciences and entrepreneurship and regional development had the largest number of publications with a total of 44 and 42, respectively.

Our understanding of “the Web” and its e-commerce (EC) potential has grown rapidly during the past decade. While ecommerce has matured and is now mainstream, there continue to be opportunities to innovate as technology improves, the public is increasingly comfortable with and dependent up the e-approach, and new or enhanced applications appear. While historical roots of the Web go back several decades, it was only in the last two that business really started to embrace the Internet, and in the last one that commercial opportunities on the Web grew rapidly. Business use has gone from simple operational efficiencies (e-mail on the Internet, replacement of private EDI networks, etc.) to effectiveness (enhanced services, virtual products, and competitive advantage). Information and information products, available in digital form, and the ability to quickly transfer these from one party to another, have led to a paradigm shift in the way organizations operate. Many BPR (business process re-engineering) projects made use of the Web to streamline business processes and reduce or eliminate delays. Web self-service has emerged as a popular approach, with benefits for both customers and providers. Even governments have embraced the Web (e-government) for information and service delivery and interaction with citizens and businesses. While the transition has followed the historical IT progression of automate, infomate, and transformate, the pace has been unprecedented. There have been successes and failures, with fortunes made and lost. After the dot-com boom/bust cycle, things settled down somewhat; yet the rapid pace of Web initiatives continues. At the forefront are innovators seeking competitive advantage. At the rear are laggards who can no longer ignore efficiencies provided by the Web and market requirements to be Web-enabled. Paralleling the improvement in IT and the Internet has been a series of economic shifts including globalization, flattening of hierarchical organizations, outsourcing and off-shoring, increasing emphasis on knowledge work (contrasted with manual labor), plus growth in the service sector and information economy. IT has both hastened these economic shifts and provided a welcome means of addressing the accompanying pressures (often through EC or other Web initiatives). To consider EC strategy and Web initiatives, one first needs to understand strategy and then extend this to the organization’s business model and tactics. A firm’s general business strategy includes, but is not limited to, its IT strategy (Figure 1). Similarly, EC strategy is a subset of IT strategy. Strategy should drive actions (tactics), through an appropriate business model. When strategy (business, IT, and EC) and tactics are closely aligned, and tactics are successfully executed, desirable results are obtained. Sometimes this normative view becomes reversed or otherwise changed. In the extreme, Web initiatives become the sole major focus (as was the case in the early days of the dot-com boom). However, without alignment between such tactics and the firm’s strategy and business model, such an approach is either doomed to eventual failure or substantial modification. In addition to commercial use of the Web, there are many non-commercial uses and non-commercial users (governments, educational institutions, medical organizations, etc.). The term e-business is often used to include both commercial and non-commercial activity on the Internet. In this article, the focus is on commercial activities (B2B and B2C). While e-government includes use of EC, governments are often driven by goals and responsibilities other than profit generation or cost reduction.

Nowadays, knowledge is considered as one of the most valuable assets of an enterprise which has to be managed efficiently and effectively in order to gain a competitive advantage in the knowledge economy era. Knowledge Management (KM) evolved into a strategic management approach, finding application not only in the business world but also in other areas such as education, government and healthcare. In this way, the new link between KM and KBD created the appropriate environment for the advent of a new concept in the scientific and practitioners’ communities, the concept of “Knowledge City” (KC). Nowadays, the theme of KCs is a ‘hot’ topic of interest and discussion. The process for developing a KC, is neither quick nor simple. This seems to be already understood by the research community, which the last few hears has begun to concentrate its efforts so as to develop appropriate frameworks, methodologies, tools, systems, etc so as to support the development of KCs. In this context, and given that there are still many pending issues, this article attempts to propose a taxonomy of KC research, by co instantaneously presenting the status with these major themes of KC research. The discussion presented on this article should be of value to researchers and practitioners.
