The paper describes the assumptions of modern methods of teaching foreign languages, and this description includes the proposals of their creators regarding the knowledge that the student must acquire and the competences that he/she is to form. The results of the test checking sociocultural knowledge and sociolinguistic competences of Russian Studies students is also discussed. The low global result of the test (57% of correct answers) showed a poor record of students in terms of the examined issues. Knowledge about Russia is very superficial among the study participants. They are also not good in dealing with contacts on the level of official relations (formal records of statements).

Abstract The amplitude of the interest and of the concerns related to the identification and the setting of the foundation necessary for perfecting higher education increasingly brings the adjustment of didactic activities to the students’ particularities to the attention of educational theory and practice, with a view to forming and developing their personality. The necessity and utilization of differentiating learning through modern methods specific to an efficient didactic methodology requires the adaptation of higher education to new modalities of organization and development, combined with knowledge adjusted to the particularities of the students’ personality. The rethinking and reconsideration of the didactic activities from this perspective also benefits from the opportunities provided by the facilities of the new scientific breakthroughs in the field of technology. Therefore, making differentiated and individualized instruction efficient by using advanced technologies represents one of the challenges of updating teaching foreign languages within higher education. Being a major component, the information and communications technology (ICT) opens new and significant opportunities, as well solutions for enhancing the level of the outcomes obtained by students in the differentiated and individualized education of foreign languages. Approaching several aspects specific to the implementation of ICT in the didactic activities pertains to the theoretical, methodological and praxiological preoccupations that aim at diversifying and increasing the obvious advantages offered by differentiated instruction in higher education.

Abstract Collaborative communicative techniques are essential in teaching foreign languages. Our article presents a few modern methods and techniques used in the practice of teaching foreign languages. The aim was to discover what methods are still the most frequently used in the teaching of foreign languages, focusing on communicative techniques in teaching German as a foreign language. The use of collaborative communicative techniques during foreign language classes enables the students to easily acquire vocabulary by means of a process that is both stimulating and enjoyable. The students develop what the specialists call “learner autonomy”, becoming more confident and independent. The conclusion we have reached is that traditional methods still coexist with modern ones, an eclectic approach being highly efficient in teaching foreign languages.

In this study, participants acquired three types of language, those are regional, national and foreign ones. The purpose of this research was to explore how Indonesian polyglots acquire several different languages. We collected data through demographic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews obtained from nine participants. Four salient themes and sub-themes that emerged in this research were (a) mastering languages through instructed learning (learning in formal educational institution and learning in informal educational institution), (b) gaining extra amounts of languages input beyond the classroom (getting more access to a national language environment and getting more access to foreign languages environment), (c) learning languages autonomously (self-directed learning through printed resources and self-directed learning through media and technology), and (d) acculturating with a new language group in society. The findings indicated that the polyglots acquired several different languages through a natural process, a learning process, and a mixture of both naturalistic as well as instructed experiences.

The article attempts to reveal the cases of interference in mastering a foreign language and to suggest possible modern methods of preventing this linguistic phenomenon. While learning a foreign language various kinds of challenges which appear in this process should be taken into consideration. The phenomena of interference on different levels of language most frequently occur in conditions of artificial bilingualism. Modern methodology suggests a number of beneficial ways of effective language teaching and learning. The so-called “mobile learning” as an innovative way of teaching English, is suggested in the article for effective language learning to prevent the phenomena of interference.

Also, the age factor in bilingualism is highlighted in the article and the cases of early bilingualism are regarded as the area of special interest in the study of language interference.

Overall, the learners’ age peculiarities in bilingualism and the methods of teaching the foreign language are crucial in preventing the phenomena of interference.

Symmetry and balance are basic concepts in art theory for the composition of pictures. It is assumed that well-balanced pictures are preferred to unbalanced ones. One of the first experimental studies to test this assumption was conducted more than a century ago by Ethel Puffer. By applying a production method, she found little evidence for the hypothesis that balance is favorable for the aesthetical appreciation of pictures. Instead, she observed that other construction principles competing with balance, such as bilateral symmetry and closeness, were applied. The aim of the present study was to repeat some of Puffer’s experiments with modern methods and to examine whether her results are replicable. In two experiments, we also found little to no evidence for balance. Moreover, as in Puffer’s study, participants used closeness and bilateral symmetry as principles. However, compared to that study, the relative frequency of use of these principles was quite different.
