Abstract Al-3 vol% CNT nanocomposites were processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature under the pressure in the range of 2.5-10 GPa for up to 10 turns. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate the microstructural evolutions upon HPT. Mechanical properties of the HPT-processed disks were studied using tensile tests and microhardness measurements. The results show gradual evolutions in the density, microstructure, and hardness with increasing the number of turns and applied presure. Nanostructured and elongated Al grains with an average grain thickness of ~40 nm perpendicular to the compression axis of HPT and an aspect ratio of ~3 are formed after 10 turns under 6 GPa. Evaluating the mechanical properties of the 10-turn processed Al/CNT nanocomposites indicates a tensile strength of 321 MPa and a hardness of 122 Hv. The tensile fracture surface of the Al/CNT nanocomposite mostly demonstrates a smooth fracture manner with fine dimples resulting in a low tensile ductility of ~1.5%.

Al2O3 particles reinforced ZL109 composites were prepared by in-situ reaction between Fe2O3+MnO2 and Al in this paper. The influence of ratio of Mn to Fe on the morphologies of Al-Si-Mn-Fe phase and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. The microstructure was studied by electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the Al2O3 particles displaced by the Fe2O3+MnO2/Al system are in nanosize. The acicular Al-Si-Fe phases change from acicular to polygonal shape and become smaller with the increase manganese content. The hardness test results have no big difference on the composites. However, the ultimate tensile strength at room temperature and 350°C enhance evidently with the increasing of Mn/Fe.

Effects of filler loading on the mechanical properties of Epoxidised natural rubber (ENR) filled with bio-fillers were studied. The compounds with different filler loadings (0, 30, 50, 70 phr) were prepared in a Haake internal mixer. Result showed that the viscosity of the compounds increased with filler loading and exhibited longer cure time with higher loading of the bio-filler. The mechanical properties of starch-filled vulcanisates present better tensile strength at 50 phr when compared to micro-crystalline cellulose (MCC) filled vulcanisates at similar filler loadings. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of tensile fracture surface of 50 phr starch-filled vulcanisates illustrated a homogenous distribution in comparison with MCC-filled compounds.

An Al 7075 alloy (5.63mass%Zn-2.56mass%Mg-1.68mass%Cu-0.21mass%Fe-0.19mass%Cr-0.14mass%Si-0.02mass%Ti with balance of Al) was processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) under an applied pressure of 6 GPa for 1, 3 and 5 revolutions with a rotation speed of 1 rpm at room temperature. Vickers microhardness saturated to a level of 220 Hv after the HPT processing and the grain size was refined to 120 nm at the state of the hardness saturation. Tensile tests were conducted with initial strain rates from 2.0 × 10-4 to 2.0 × 10-2 s-1 at temperatures as 200 °C and 250 °C (equivalent to 0.52Tm and 0.57Tm, respectively, where Tm is the melting point of the alloy). The HPT-processed samples for 3 revolutions exhibited superplastic elongations of 640% and 510% at 250 °C with initial strain rates of 2.0 × 10-3 s-1 and 2.0 × 10-2 s-1, respectively.

In this paper, the effect of trace Sn on the precipitation behavior and mechanical properties of Al–Mg–Si alloys with different Mg/Si ratios aged at 180 °C was investigated using hardness measurements, a room-temperature tensile test, transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The results shown that Sn reduces the precipitation activation energy, increases the number density of β″ precipitates, and then increased the aging hardenability and mechanical properties of the Al–Mg–Si alloy. However, the positive effect of Sn on the mechanical properties of the Al–Mg–Si alloy drops with the decrease of the Mg/Si ratio of the alloy.

High-pressure torsion (HPT) is one of the major severe plastic deformation (SPD) procedures where disk metals generally achieve exceptional grain refinement at ambient temperatures. HPT has been applied for the consolidation of metallic powders and bonding of machining chips whereas very limited reports examined the application of HPT for the fabrication of nanocomposites. An investigation was initiated to evaluate the potential for the formation of a metal matrix nanocomposite (MMNC) by processing two commercial metal disks of Al-1050 and ZK60 magnesium alloy through HPT at room temperature. Evolutions in microstructure and mechanical properties including hardness and plasticity were examined in the processed disks with increasing numbers of HPT turns up to 5. This study demonstrates the promising possibility for using HPT to fabricate a wide range of hybrid MMNCs from simple metals.

It is well known that severe plastic deformation not only leads to strong grain refinement and material strengthening but also can drive phase transformations. A study of the fundamentals of α → ω phase transformations induced by high-pressure torsion (HPT) in Ti–Nb-based alloys is presented in the current work. Before HPT, a Ti–3wt.%Nb alloy was annealed at two different temperatures in order to obtain the α-phase state with different amounts of niobium. X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied for the characterisation of phase transitions and evolution of the microstructure. A small amount of the β-phase was found in the initial states, which completely transformed into the ω-phase during the HPT process. During HPT, strong grain refinement in the α-phase took place, as did partial transformation of the α- into the ω-phase. Therefore, two kinds of ω-phase, each with different chemical composition, were obtained after HPT. The first one was formed from the β-phase, enriched in Nb, and the second one from the α-phase. It was also found that the transformation of the α-phase into the ω-phase depended on the Nb concentration in the α-Ti phase. The less Nb there was in the α-phase, the more of the α-phase was transformed into the ω-phase.

Pure commercial Cu of 99,98 wt % purity was processed at room temperature by Equal- Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) following route Bc. Heavy deformation was introduced in the samples after a considerable number of ECAP passes, namely 1, 4, 8, 12 and 16. A significant grain refinement was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tensile and microhardness tests were also carried out on the deformed material in order to correlate microstructure and mechanical properties. Microhardness measurements displayed a quite homogeneous strain distribution. The most significative microstructural and mechanical changes were introduced in the first ECAP pass although a gradual increment in strength and a slight further grain refinement was noticed in the consecutive ECAP passes.

Al-2 wt. % Si alloys with and without 0.25 wt. % scandium additions were processed by high-pressure torsion up to five turns at room temperature under a pressure of 6.0 GPa. Microstructural examination of the as-cast Al-2Si-0.25Sc alloy revealed the presence of Al3Sc precipitates which refined the Al grain structure, whereas no major changes were observed in the morphology of the Si particles. Processing by HPT of both experimental alloys revealed submicrometer grains with uniformly distributed Si particles. The mechanical properties were obtained using hardness measurements and the ball-indentation technique. The results show the hardness increased in the first turn of HPT and further increased with increasing numbers of turns. In addition, the hardness values were lower at the centers and continuously increased towards the edges of the disks. The difference in hardness values between the centre and the edge decreased with increasing turns, thereby suggesting an increasing homogeneity with increasing processing. The scandium addition and HPT processing of the Al-2Si alloy strongly influences the grain refinement and mechanical properties. The grain size reduction in the Al-2Si alloy was similar to Al whereas the presence of Sc in Al-2Si during HPT processing was responsible for large precipitation networks and a submicrometer grain formation.

The L12-structured intermetallic compound Zr3Al can be rendered amorphous easily by several techniques. In the present study the structural evolution during high pressure torsion (HPT) was investigated systematically by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. Zr3Al samples were deformed at room temperature to different grades of deformation up to shear strains of 140 000%. TEM investigations revealed that the tendency to grain fragmentation, disordering and the formation of a nanocrystalline structure is weak compared to other L12 ordered alloys like Ni3Al. In addition, an amorphous phase has not been encountered. The present results differ strongly from previous ones obtained from ball-milled materials. Possible reasons for the different behavior are discussed on the basis of the temperature dependent dissociation scheme of the superlattice dislocations gliding in Zr3Al.
