Abstract This study examines the relationship between sex-related perceptions and engagement in sexual intercourse among adolescents in Japan who were heavy users of text massaging. Using the data from the 6th National Survey on Youth Sexual Behavior of 548 high school students who heavily use text messaging, multinomial logistic regression analyses on variables constructing sexual norms and gender-role attitudes were conducted to assess the relationship with sexual activity status as the first step. A backward stepwise elimination method of multinomial logistic regression was used as the second step at which variables for each set of two factors were tested, and as the third step at which variables of two factors were simultaneously tested. The study results showed that perceptions were related to engagement in sexual intercourse among adolescents who heavily used text messaging. In particular, those who perceived that sex is an act to be engaged in at an earlier stage of a relationship and that men have a stronger sex drive tended to be sexually active or have experienced sexual intercourse. These findings could be utilized to design more effective sexual health education messages for Japanese adolescents who are at an elevated risk.

Background. In the United States, emergency departments (EDs) are constantly pressured to improve operational efficiency and quality in order to gain financial benefits and maintain a positive reputation.Objectives.The first objective is to evaluate how efficiently EDs transform their input resources into quality outputs. The second objective is to investigate the relationship between the efficiency and quality performance of EDs and the factors affecting this relationship.Methods.Using two data sources, we develop a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to evaluate the relative efficiency of EDs. Based on the DEA result, we performed multinomial logistic regression to investigate the relationship between ED efficiency and quality performance.Results.The DEA results indicated that the main source of inefficiencies was working hours of technicians. The multinomial logistic regression result indicated that the number of electrocardiograms and X-ray procedures conducted in the ED and the length of stay were significantly associated with the trade-offs between relative efficiency and quality. Structural ED characteristics did not influence the relationship between efficiency and quality.Conclusions.Depending on the structural and operational characteristics of EDs, different factors can affect the relationship between efficiency and quality.

The study aimed to determine the relationship between writing anxiety and writing self-efficacy of students learning Turkish as a foreign language. The study sample consisted of 247 international students at B1 and B2 levels at the Turkish Education Application and Research Center of a foundation university. The Writing Anxiety Scale for Learners of Turkish as a Foreign Language, developed by Şen and Boylu (2017), was used to determine students’ writing anxiety. There were 13 items and two factors on the scale: Action-Oriented Anxiety and Environmental Oriented Anxiety. The Writing Self-Efficacy Scale for Turkish Students who Learn Turkish was developed by Büyükikiz (2012) to determine the students’ writing self-efficacy. This two-factor scale had 16 items and explained 56.85% of the variance. The research was designed based on the relational screening model. SPSS 21.0 package programs were used to analyze the data. The study results indicated a significant positive relationship between writing anxiety and writing self-efficacy of students who learned Turkish as a foreign language. Besides, there was no significant difference between the Turkish learners’ scores from the writing anxiety scale and their language level.

Abstrac: This study addresses the relationship between two lifestyle factors that have a particular impact on the health of young people, as are the usual practice of leisure-time physical activity and smoking. Smoking habits and leisure-time physical activity was assessed in a sample of 6362 high school students (3129 men and 3233 women) from Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and Post-compulsory Secondary Education (ESPO). The results show that patterns of smoking and leisure-time physical activity of our sample are similar to the rest of the Spanish adolescents. Regarding to the relationship between the two factors studied, differences in smoking habits depending on the quantity and intensity of leisure-time physical activity.

Abstract Background: The increase in the number of Internet users has increased Internet dependence worldwide. In adolescents, this dependence may interfere with sleep, which is important for the development of psychophysiological capabilities. However, few large-scale surveys have described the relationship between Internet addiction (IA) and sleep disturbance using standardized questionnaires. We conducted a survey in one prefecture in Japan to determine the relationship between sleep disturbance and IA in adolescents based on the categories of the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ).Methods: In 2016, high school students (N=10,405, age range: 15–16 years) in all 54 daytime high schools in the selected prefecture were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. Participants with scores > 5.5 points on the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were defined as having a sleep disturbance. IA was evaluated using the YDQ: Participants with five to eight YDQ items present were classified as having IA; those with three or four items present were classified as “at risk of IA”; and those with two or less YDQ items were classified as “non-IA”. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed with sleep disturbance as the dependent variable, IA as the explanatory variable, and adjustments for eight other variables. Results: High YDQ scores were associated with a high prevalence of sleep disturbance in boys and girls. These findings persisted after controlling for other factors in the multiple regression model. Conclusions: Among Japanese adolescents, there was a significant independent relationship between IA and sleep disturbance.

Abstract Background: The increase in the number of Internet users has increased Internet dependence worldwide. In adolescents, this dependence interferes with sleep, which is important for the development of psychophysiological capabilities. However, few large-scale surveys have descriptively examined the relationship between Internet addiction (IA) and sleep disturbance using standardized questionnaires. We conducted this study to determine the relationship between sleep disturbance in adolescents and IA based on the categories of the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ) through a complete survey of one prefecture in Japan. Methods: In 2016, a self-report questionnaire was used to survey high school students (n=10,405, age range: 15–16 years) in all 54 day-boarding high schools in the selected prefecture. We defined “sleep disturbance” by scores greater than 5.5 points on the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. IA was evaluated using the YDQ: “IA,” when five of the eight YDQ items were present; “at-risk,” when three or four YDQ items were reported; and “non-IA,” when two or less YDQ items were positive. Multiple logistic regression analysis was undertaken with sleep disturbance as the dependent variable, IA as the explanatory variable, and adjustments for eight items. Results: High YDQ scores were associated with high prevalence rates of sleep disturbance in boys and girls. These findings persisted after controlling for other factors in the multiple regression model. Conclusions: Among Japanese adolescents, there was a significant independent relationship between IA and sleep disturbances.

Abstract Background Unlike ageism that consists of one’s prejudice, stereotype, and discrimination toward older adults, age-based threats are one’s negative cognition (Levy, 2001). Previous studies indicated that the younger generation stigmatizes the older generation as unworthy during the COVID-19 pandemic (Meisner, 2021). However, there is no study looking at how older adults perceive themselves as threats to society during this time of the pandemic. Thus, our study aimed to understand the varying trend of older adults’ awareness as a threat to society in association with socio-economic profiles before and during the pandemic. Method: This study included 637 Korean older adults who answered the older generation’s threats to society from 2018 to 2020. We used Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to categorize participants into different subgroups that shared distinct patterns of threats to society. Multinomial logistic regression examined how the subgroups in threats to society were associated with socio-demographic characteristics in each year. Results For three waves, three clusters of threats to society (low, mid, and high) were identified. Although the mid-level of threat remained the same (60% of the sample for three years), the high level of threats has been doubled in 2019 (25%) compared to 2018 (11%) and 2020 (13%). Regarding the associated socio-demographic characteristics with threats to society, those who being female in 2018 and younger age in 2020 were more likely to be associated with mid-level of threats to society. Discussion Further study needs to identify the relationship between awareness as a threat to society and health outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between legal stops and winning in team handball. Real-time analysis was performed on all games played in the Icelandic elite division for both males and females (regular season and playoffs) between 2017–2021 (854 games [570 male games, 284 female games], 32,392 legal stops in total). Legal stops were assessed as any physical action by a defensive player that resulted in the stop of play, without the defensive player being penalized or the offensive player receiving a 7-meter throw. The results from a multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that legal stops were significantly associated with winning games in the male league. No statistically significant relationship was found between illegal stops and game outcome for either sex. However, 2-minute suspensions were found to be positively associated with winning in the male league.

The purpose of the present study was to clarify the relationship between the development of the yips in baseball, overcommitment to sport, and resilience. Participants: 482 Japanese baseball players who belonged to a university baseball team (mean age = 19.43 years, SD = 1.00) were included in the analysis. A face sheet, a questionnaire on the yips, the scale of overcommitment to sport, and the Bidimensional Resilience Scale. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the extent, to which overcommitment and resilience predicted the presence or absence of developing the yips in baseball. The results indicated the overcommitment was significant but the two factors of resilience, namely, innate resilience and acquired resilience were not significant. Thus, it is possible that the higher the tendency of overcommitment to baseball, the higher the possibility of developing the yips. It is recommended that a longitudinal study be conducted to examine what factors are involved in the process in depth. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the relationship between the development of the yips in baseball, overcommitment to sport, and resilience. Binary logistic regression analyses revealed that while overcommitment was significant in the development of the yips, innate and acquired resilience were not. It is recommended that a longitudinal study be conducted to examine what factors are involved in the process in depth.

This study analyses the relationship between four near-synonymous Swedish prepositions, namely angående, beträffande, gällande and rörande, which are used to establish what we call a topic-marking relation, as in statens avtal angående finansieringen ‘the agreement of the state regarding the financing’. By focusing on a single, loosely defined genre consisting of the written texts included in the Swedish PAROLE corpus, we address the question of what differences there are among these four prepositions, which intuitively seem highly similar and mutually interchangeable. In order to find out which contextual and grammatical factors might influence the choice of one preposition over the others, two complementary analyses were performed. First, a so-called collostructional analysis (see Stefanowitsch & Gries 2003, Gries & Stefanowitsch 2004) was performed on 791 cases of these prepositions found in the PAROLE corpus. Secondly, the corpus examples were annotated according to ten syntactic and four semantic criteria and a multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed on the annotated data set. The results show some tendencies pointing to differing usage patterns of the four prepositions. Beträffande stands out as the most frequent of them all and is also preferably used when no explicit head element is present, typically in sentence-initial position. Angående prefers words of communication while rörande is used when another topic-marking preposition is also present. On the other hand, neither of the two analyses leads to a clear distinction among the four prepositions, thus pointing to the fact that these topic-marking prepositions indeed constitute a fairly good case of adpositional synonymy, with few distinguishing factors separating one from the other.
