The medicinal plants have been used by humans since ancient times, and the great civilizations of the world in ancient times were well aware of the benefits brought by the use of medicinal plants. This chapter provides important information regarding medicinal plants that have a wide variety of antioxidative agents ranging from bitter compounds that stimulate digestion system, phenolic compounds for antioxidant and numerous other pharmacological properties, antibacterial, and antifungal to tannins that act as natural antibiotics, diuretic substances, alkaloids, and so forth.

Medicinal plants are rich in secondary metabolites, the most important of which are alkaloids. Alkaloids are organic compounds that have diverse structural and physiological activity. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are non-polar compounds that have side effects and harmful effects especially hepatotoxicity in addition to its medicinal properties. Therefore, due to the presence of these materials in some medicinal plants and the importance of these materials and consumption of plants, and monitoring and more precision in these cases, this study was carried out. In this paper, the information have been collected from electronic library resources and from reputable sites such as Google Scholar and Scopus, PubMed, ISI (Web of Science), and the related keywords, which was the benchmark for the period between 1991 and 2019, and about 90 articles and non-electronic resources for pyrolyzidine alkaloids, Medicinal plants, their effects, and their experiences and experiences were evaluated. Pyrrolizidine alkoxides in some dark Vegetable plants such as Leguminosae, Asteraceae, Orchidoceae, Boraginaceae family have been reported. Consumption of herbal products has been commonplace from centuries ago and is vital importance in various parts of the world, today. Many alkaloids are mutagenic and carcinogenic to humans. PAS-containing plants are present in most parts of the world and cause poisoning and damage to humans, livestock and wildlife.Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are found in some plants, can be harmed to body tissues, important properties and medicinal effects, of course, have also been reported, which requires it to be used for studying, knowing and recognizing the structure, organs and plants.

Herbs orchestrate resurgence and vegetal awakening is supervened everywhere in the world. Medicinal plants always played an important role in the health development of mankind. Piper longum provides us new lead molecules for the development of drugs against various pharmacological targets. Plants included in this family are annual and persistent herbs or shrubs, indigenous to northern moderate stretch of the world. Piper longum is well known for its medicinal and pharmaceutical importance. In this review studies we will want to explore the various pharmacological properties of Piper longum in Unani system of medicine. Evidence suggests that various listed of Unani Medicine formulated with the Piper longum among these few are tablet, capsule, syrup and semi-solid etc. The primary constituents isolated from various parts of P. longum are piperine, piperlongumine, sylvatin, sesamin, diaeudesmin piperlonguminine, pipermonaline, and piperundecalidine. It is most commonly used to treat chronic bronchitis, asthma, constipation, gonorrhea, paralysis of the tongue, diarrhea, cholera, chronic malaria, viral hepatitis, respiratory infections, stomachache, bronchitis, diseases of the spleen, cough, and tumors. Outbreak of novel corona virus (Covid-19) or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS CoV-2) was noticed in China at the end of 2019 and has now become one of the major global health threat. Although, Covid-19 virus imposes detrimental effects to all groups of persons irrespective of their age, sex, race and body physic. Immuno-compromised people are reported to be severely affected in comparison to immunocompetent persons, suggesting immunity as a major player against SARS CoV-2. Despite of great efforts and intensive researches carried all over the world, so far there are no clinically approved vaccines or specific therapeutic drugs available for Covid-19. In this regard, different traditional medicinal plants, which are vast reservoir of bioactive compounds with broad therapeutic and immunomodulatory properties, have been emerged as boon to combat with Covid-19. Along with pharmacological properties and easily availability, safety paradigm of ethnomedicinal plants makes them highly preferable immediate remedy to enhance immunity and compete with novel corona virus. Use of traditional Indian spices has been also realized as effective and safer strategy in order to boost immunity and deal with highly terrible current Covid-19 situation. Hence, there is need to boost the efficacy of the traditionally used plant based immunomodulators against Covid-19 pandemic incorporating modern biotechnological and pharmacological tools so as to enhance bioavailability and practical applicability. The present article deals with general feature of SARS CoV-2 along with recent reports on efficacy of traditional medicinal plants as well as Indian spices as an effective immunomodulator for Covid-19.

Phytochemicals are produced by plants as a defence mechanism against pathogens. They are used to treat various metabolic, immunological and neurological disorders in humans in various parts of the world as a part of traditional medicine. The use of indigenous plants in commercial medicine is rising with increasing population. The antimicrobial properties of plant extracts led to increased demands. Plant tissue culture on the other hand, has proved to be a reliable alternative for the production of bioactive compounds from plants. Artificial plant culture can enhance the production of phytochemicals in medicinal plants. This review focuses on the medicinal properties of phytochemicals and their in-vitro production.

Medicinal herbs have a rich history of their utilization for a variety of ailments. India is considered among those countries which have produced a vast variety of medicinal plants. Medicinal plants are the source of the discovery of new drugs across the world. Most of the drugs available today have some herbal content of plants in them. Due to this over-utilization of the herbal plant, it becomes endangered. Nardostachys jatamansi is a popular aromatic herbal plant. This plant is also on the verge of extinction due to the overexploitation of the rhizomes part of the herb. It is small, hairy, perennial, rhizomatous species of Valerianacea family. It is cultivated mostly in higher altitude areas. Jatamansi demonstrates various folk, Ayurvedic and pharmacological uses. Jatamansone and nardostachone are the main compounds present in the plant that possesses various activities like antimicrobial, antifungal, hypotensive, antiarrhythmic and anticonvulsant activity, etc. In this review, the phytochemicals pharmacological properties, Ayurvedic properties and folk uses of N. jatamansi are briefly explained.

Adhatoda vasica (L.) Nees is also known as Justicia adhatoda L. belongs to the family Acanthaceae and is considered the most significant plant in the world. It is commonly known as Vasaka, Vasica, Adosa, Malbur nut and is distributed in various regions of India and throughout the world. It is a well-known plant in Ayurveda and Unani medicinal system. This plant has been used in the indigenous medicinal system of India for more than 2000 years. The plant has great medicinal importance and is used to treat various diseases and disorders mainly respiratory tract diseases like cough, symptoms of common cold, asthma, tuberculosis and chronic bronchitis. All the parts of the plant are used in medicines. Vasicine is the main chemical constituent present in this plant which possesses various medicinal properties and is used in different Ayurveda formulations. Also, it contains various reported pharmacological properties like antispasmodic, sedative, expectorant, antitussive, oxytocic, antibacterial, anti-diabetic, wound healing, abortifacient, antiasthma and anti-pyorrhea.
