The medicinal plants have been used by humans since ancient times, and the great civilizations of the world in ancient times were well aware of the benefits brought by the use of medicinal plants. This chapter provides important information regarding medicinal plants that have a wide variety of antioxidative agents ranging from bitter compounds that stimulate digestion system, phenolic compounds for antioxidant and numerous other pharmacological properties, antibacterial, and antifungal to tannins that act as natural antibiotics, diuretic substances, alkaloids, and so forth.

As aboriginal sources of medications, medicinal plants are used from the ancient times.Andrographis paniculatais one of the highly used potential medicinal plants in the world. This plant is traditionally used for the treatment of common cold, diarrhoea, fever due to several infective cause, jaundice, as a health tonic for the liver and cardiovascular health, and as an antioxidant. It is also used to improve sexual dysfunctions and serve as a contraceptive. All parts of this plant are used to extract the active phytochemicals, but the compositions of phytoconstituents widely differ from one part to another and with place, season, and time of harvest. Our extensive data mining of the phytoconstituents revealed more than 55ent-labdane diterpenoids, 30 flavonoids, 8 quinic acids, 4 xanthones, and 5 rare noriridoids. In this review, we selected only those compounds that pharmacology has already reported. Finally we focused on around 46 compounds for further discussion. We also discussed ethnobotany of this plant briefly. Recommendations addressing extraction process, tissue culture, and adventitious rooting techniques and propagation under abiotic stress conditions for improvement of phytoconstituents are discussed concisely in this paper. Further study areas on pharmacology are also proposed where needed.

Herbs orchestrate resurgence and vegetal awakening is supervened everywhere in the world. Medicinal plants always played an important role in the health development of mankind. Piper longum provides us new lead molecules for the development of drugs against various pharmacological targets. Plants included in this family are annual and persistent herbs or shrubs, indigenous to northern moderate stretch of the world. Piper longum is well known for its medicinal and pharmaceutical importance. In this review studies we will want to explore the various pharmacological properties of Piper longum in Unani system of medicine. Evidence suggests that various listed of Unani Medicine formulated with the Piper longum among these few are tablet, capsule, syrup and semi-solid etc. The primary constituents isolated from various parts of P. longum are piperine, piperlongumine, sylvatin, sesamin, diaeudesmin piperlonguminine, pipermonaline, and piperundecalidine. It is most commonly used to treat chronic bronchitis, asthma, constipation, gonorrhea, paralysis of the tongue, diarrhea, cholera, chronic malaria, viral hepatitis, respiratory infections, stomachache, bronchitis, diseases of the spleen, cough, and tumors. Outbreak of novel corona virus (Covid-19) or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS CoV-2) was noticed in China at the end of 2019 and has now become one of the major global health threat. Although, Covid-19 virus imposes detrimental effects to all groups of persons irrespective of their age, sex, race and body physic. Immuno-compromised people are reported to be severely affected in comparison to immunocompetent persons, suggesting immunity as a major player against SARS CoV-2. Despite of great efforts and intensive researches carried all over the world, so far there are no clinically approved vaccines or specific therapeutic drugs available for Covid-19. In this regard, different traditional medicinal plants, which are vast reservoir of bioactive compounds with broad therapeutic and immunomodulatory properties, have been emerged as boon to combat with Covid-19. Along with pharmacological properties and easily availability, safety paradigm of ethnomedicinal plants makes them highly preferable immediate remedy to enhance immunity and compete with novel corona virus. Use of traditional Indian spices has been also realized as effective and safer strategy in order to boost immunity and deal with highly terrible current Covid-19 situation. Hence, there is need to boost the efficacy of the traditionally used plant based immunomodulators against Covid-19 pandemic incorporating modern biotechnological and pharmacological tools so as to enhance bioavailability and practical applicability. The present article deals with general feature of SARS CoV-2 along with recent reports on efficacy of traditional medicinal plants as well as Indian spices as an effective immunomodulator for Covid-19.

The<br />plants as herbal drugs lay down an important foundation of different, well recognized, ancient, and traditional healthcare systems in India as well as<br />other parts of the world. In India, plants constitute an important and indispensable role in different ancient healthcare systems such as Ayurveda,<br />Siddha, Unani, Naturopathy, and Homeopathy. In Ayurveda system of medicine, one of the Rasayana plants having a great medicinal importance is<br />Sida cordifolia belonging to the family Malvaceae. It is an annual undershrub found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of India. It has<br />been used since ancient times for various ailments in Ayurveda system of medicine. It has numerous folklore uses in different pathological conditions.<br />The plant also reported to possess a number of important pharmacological activities. Cannabis sativa is one of the oldest medicinal plants in the world. It was introduced into western medicine during the early 19th century. It contains a complex mixture of secondary metabolites, including cannabinoids and non-cannabinoid-type constituents. More than 500 compounds have been reported from C. sativa, of which 125 cannabinoids have been isolated and/or identified as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are C21 terpeno-phenolic compounds specific to Cannabis. The non-cannabinoid constituents include: non-cannabinoid phenols, flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloids and others. This review discusses the chemistry of the cannabinoids and major non-cannabinoid constituents (terpenes, non-cannabinoid phenolics, and alkaloids) with special emphasis on their chemical structures, methods of isolation, and identification.

Medicinal herbs have a rich history of their utilization for a variety of ailments. India is considered among those countries which have produced a vast variety of medicinal plants. Medicinal plants are the source of the discovery of new drugs across the world. Most of the drugs available today have some herbal content of plants in them. Due to this over-utilization of the herbal plant, it becomes endangered. Nardostachys jatamansi is a popular aromatic herbal plant. This plant is also on the verge of extinction due to the overexploitation of the rhizomes part of the herb. It is small, hairy, perennial, rhizomatous species of Valerianacea family. It is cultivated mostly in higher altitude areas. Jatamansi demonstrates various folk, Ayurvedic and pharmacological uses. Jatamansone and nardostachone are the main compounds present in the plant that possesses various activities like antimicrobial, antifungal, hypotensive, antiarrhythmic and anticonvulsant activity, etc. In this review, the phytochemicals pharmacological properties, Ayurvedic properties and folk uses of N. jatamansi are briefly explained.

The worldwide epidemic of SARS-CoV-2 has created a panic situation in human beings. Covid-19 viruses spread infections into the specific human cells through cell-surface receptor ACE2 and start viral replication speedily inside the human body. The action of antibodies can reduce the entry of the virus into the cell by binding with the spike head and prevent to connect with ACE2 receptor. Many types of research are going to find the exact vaccine to control the spread of this virus. But still, now there is no vaccine and specific medicine invented still now, which is a big headache across the world. At this pandemic period, boosting of the immune system is the best way to fight against this virus. From ancient times, Ayurved is known as the best immune booster for animals and mammals. The herbal plants, such as Nyctanthes arbor-tristis L. And Withania somnifera has excellent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, inhibition of oxidants, carcinopreventive properties with important chemicals like Withaferins, different alkaloids, steroids, amino acids. This review is based on a brief discussion of the pharmacological behaviors, active ingredients, and potential therapeutic applications of these medicinal plants.

The purpose of this research is to assess the anti-diabetic effects of several medicinal herbs. Herbal medicine has grown in popularity in both developing and developed countries over the last several years, owing to its natural origins and lack of negative effects. Even though medicinal plants have been utilized to treat diabetes mellitus from ancient times, they have been offered as abundant but untapped prospective sources for anti-diabetic medicines. It's a reality that diabetes can't be cured, and no one has ever claimed to be completely free of the disease. Diabetes mellitus is becoming a severe hazard to human health in all regions of the world due to its fast growing occurrence. Furthermore, several novel bioactive compounds derived from plants have demonstrated antidiabetic action with greater efficacy than oral hypoglycemic medicines already utilized in clinical therapy in recent years. Despite the fact that many plants are recommended, further pharmacological and chemical study is needed to fully understand the mechanism of hypoglycemic action.
