AbstractWhile acknowledging that many theological beliefs and religious practices facilitate mental health and emotional stability, the major purpose of this paper is to identify and demonstrate that some of these same beliefs and practices can also contribute to mental instability if understood incorrectly and practiced unwisely. The unique content of this paper is a pastoral, clinical, and historical narrative concerning the relationships of religious belief and practice with the mental health of 16th century priest, pastor, professor, and Protestant reformer Martin Luther. Specifically, this paper discusses Luther’s personal experiences with mental and emotional instability, including depression and scrupulosity, and explores ways that discovering and embracing the principle of grace assisted him in dealing with his own mental and emotional crises. This paper also treats ways that both psychological and theological understanding of the relationship between the doctrinal principles of grace and human volition can assist both health care professionals and clergy to provide effective care to those they serve.

Helpful relations. A quality study about the alliance between users with serious mental health problems and health care professionals in two outreach teams.

In recent years Norway has established various types of assertive outreach teams in community based mental health care. The article examines the importance of the quality of the alliance between health care professionals and users in two assertive outreach teams. More specifically, we describe the common characteristics of a good relation, pointed out by both users and professionals, and the methods that are thought to support these relationships. The study has a qualitative design and data was gathered through semi structured in-depth interviews of 19 professionals and 9 users. The study concludes that helpful relationships are characterized by contact and equality, and that interaction through everyday activities helped strengthen the working alliance. Our results confirm recent research that highlights the importance of the quality of the relationship as a prerequisite for good care, and the importance of the tacit knowledge used and informal work done by professionals interacting with users.

Disputations were a fixture of Martin Luther’s academic career. Luther participated regularly in disputations. It was an important communicative vehicle through which he developed and expressed his theology. The well-known 95 theses are a case in point. Luther’s career as a disputator was impressive. Several of his most influential disputations were explicitly intended for consideration by his academic and ecclesiastical colleagues, but the majority of his disputations took place as a curricular exercise at the University of Wittenberg. The purpose of these disputations was pedagogical and polemical. Luther deployed the same tools for his defence of proper doctrine that were at the centre of the Protestant reformation in the face of objections. The disputatio de homine is a systematic summary of Luther’s anthropology. It incorporates the doctrine of justification as the theological definition of man. It treats the subject within the context of the relationship between theology and philosophy, and reflects upon the new language of theology. The disputatio de homine provides an essential resource for the study of Luther’s anthropology and the doctrine of justification.

This chapter examines two key areas of law relating to medical treatment and care of those with mental disorder. The question of decision-making capacity is important for health care professionals, as well as other carers and agents dealing with older people. The law relating to this is covered by the Mental Capacity Act 2005 supplemented by previous case law where this is still relevant, and the key aspect of the law is the ability to treat people without capacity in their best interests. However, in the case of some patients, it may be necessary to use the Mental Health Act 1983. This legislation is focused, not on the capacity of the patient, but upon the effect that a mental disorder can have upon the patient risking damage to their own wellbeing, or to the wellbeing of others. The relationship between the two areas is not always clear.

Abstract Adults (65 and older) comprised about 15% of the 2019 South Korean population (hereafter Korea), but are estimated to be 20% in 2025 and 40% in 2050 (StatisticsKorea, 2019). Good relationships with spouses impact mental health during later life (Santini et al., 2015) but 10.2% of women and 7.6% men 65 and older reported they experienced spousal violence (The Domestic Violence Survey, 2016) Moreover, violent behavior in baby-boomer marriages was significantly higher than their counterparts (Suh, 2015). Previous research investigated how relationships with adult-children impacted older Koreans’ mental health(Kim & Ko, 2013) but few examined the influence on older-adults with abusive spouses. This study investigates depression among older-adults with abusive spouses, and the impact of relationship-satisfaction with their adult-children on depression. This study utilizes the 13th wave of the nationally representative Korea Welfare Panel (2018). The sample consisted of 353 older adults 65 and older with abusive spouses over the past year. The dependent variable was depression, measured using the CES-D-11. The relationship-satisfaction with adult-children was measured on a seven-point Likert scale. Education, health, religion, sex, and age were included, and multiple regression analysis was conducted. The relationship-satisfaction with adult-children and good health status were significantly reduced depression among the population. Health care professionals and practitioners should screen for elder abuse and depression. Additionally, programs are needed to help older - adults develop good relationships with family members are needed.

*******************************************************************************The Protestant Reformation in first person:Luther and the problem of human freedomAbstract:We usually associate the work of Martin Luther with the Protestant Reformation, and this, in turn, with the beginning of European modernity. Although there are different elements that allow the transit between one phenomenon and another, the relationship is still problematic. Luther's fundamental interest is the problem of salvation, which implies, for him, a critique of the traditional notion of free will. It is intended to show the characteristics of the theological change introduced by Luther, and the close relationship of his work with his personality.
