Abstract Polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) were blended by varying ABS content. The thermal, mechanical and tribological properties of the PC/ABS blends were systematically characterized. Increasing ABS content in the PC/ABS blends decreased thermal stability of the blends, as a result of the lower thermal stability of the ABS than that of the PC. Although the tensile strength of the PC/ABS blends apparently decreased with increased ABS content, the PC/ABS blend with 10 wt% of ABS had the highest tensile strength, because of improved processability of the blend. The friction and wear of the ABS measured against a steel ball of 6 mm in diameter were higher than those of the PC. As a result, a higher ABS content in the PC/ABS blends resulted in higher friction and wear of the blends. The scratch results showed that scratching with a 5 mm steel ball generated a scratch with a shorter length and lower depth on the PC than on the ABS, which indicated better scratch resistance of the PC. Therefore, the PC/ABS blend with 50 wt% of PC had better scratch resistance than the ABS, due to the influence of the PC embedded in the blend.

For achieving sufficient flame retardancy, high magnesim hydroxide (MH) content is needed in MH flame retardant Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) composites (ABS/MH), which will cause a great decrease in mechanical property and difficulty in preparing samples for measurement. We prepared ABS/MH filled high 60.0% flame retardant by compounding ABS and modified flame retardant MH, fumed silica (SiO2) and zinc borate (ZB) via TX-10 phosphate/polyacrylate latex and studied the effect of a small amount of SiO2 and ZB with MH in ABS for improving the thermal decomposition of ABS/MH. The thermal stability of the modified flame retardant could meet the processing temperature of ABS. The incorporation of ZB, SiO2 or SiO2/ZB could improve the thermal stability of ABS/MH.

AbstractSb2S3 nanoparticles were synthesized via a simple sonochemical reaction between SbCl3 and thioacetamide. The effect of different parameters such as power and time of pulsation on the morphology of the product has been investigated. The Sb2 S3 nanostructures were then added to acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer. The effect of Sb2 S3 nanostructures on the thermal stability of the polymeric matrix has been examined. The thermal decomposition of the nanocomposite shifts towards higher temperature in the presence of the Sb2 S3 . Nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UL-94 and limiting oxygen index (LOI) analysis.

Abstract Polyamide 6 (PA6) matrix composites were prepared by incorporating multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) or by co-incorporating MWCNTs and carbon black (CB) of different contents. The thermal, mechanical and tribological properties of the composites were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, nano-indentation, ball-on-disc micro-tribological test and micro-scratch test. It was found that a proper carbon filler content in the composites promoted the thermal stability of the composites, but an excessive loading of carbon fillers degraded the thermal stability of the composites. Although the hardness of the composites decreased with increased carbon filler content, the composites filled with mixed MWCNTs and CB had a higher load bearing capacity than the ones without CB. The tribological results indicated that the increased carbon filler content apparently lowered the friction coefficient of the composites due to the lubricating effect of the carbon fillers. It was also observed that the friction coefficients of the PA6-MWCNT-CB composites were consistently higher than those of the PA6-MWCNT composites due to the lower wear resistance of the PA6-MWCNT-CB composites. The scratch resistance of the composites decreased with increased carbon filler content due to the reduced cohesive strength of the composites.

A stabilizer called 2-tert-butyl-6-(3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzyl)-4-methylphenyl acrylate (GM) was mixed in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) with the same amount of 9-bis(octadecyloxy)-2,4,8,10-tetraoxa-3,9-diphosphaspiro[5.5]undecane (DSPDP), octadecyl-3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate (Irganox 1076) and tris(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) isocyanurate (Irganox 3114) to investigate the influence of additives on the antiaging effect of ABS in oven aging or repeated extrusion aging. It was found that the ABS doped with the GM stabilizer showed a better yellowing resistance and thermal stability than the ABS doped with other antioxidants. Owing to the fact that the stabilizer can act on the free radicals before it has been peroxidized, it could trap the free radicals as a consequence of directly blocking the oxidation process of the active species, thus solving the problem of oxidative degradation of the materials from the source. This work provides guidance for improving thermal stability of ABS, indicating a promising potential for industrial application.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) terpolymer is one of the major plastics in IT equipment waste stream. In the current research secondary ABS (s-ABS) is blended with polycarbonate (PC) by forming one of the most popular thermoplastics engineering system. The effect of organically modified montmorillonite clay (OMMT) on the tensile properties and thermal stability of PC+10wt.%s-ABS blend is investigated. Increase in stiffness, strength and thermal stability is observed along with rising OMMT content. Highest increments of the aforementioned properties are observed within the OMMT range of 1-1,5 wt.%.

The laponite-poly (L-lactide) composite films are prepared by the method of solution blending with polylactide (PLA) and laponite. The result shows that the homogeneous and smooth composite film is prepared with 1, 4-dioxane. Thermogravimetry analysis (TG) and tensile strength studies demonstrate that the thermal stability and tensile strength are improved with the laponite added. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurement indicates that the pores of composite films get uniform and network structure is more and more compact with compared to pure PLA film. The present study reveals that the laponite as a complexing agent can improve the mechanical properties and thermal stability of PLA.
