Abstract Two new bicyclic acylphloroglucinol derivatives, hypercalyxone A (1-[5,7-dihydroxy-2-methyl- 3-(3-methyl-but-2-enyl)-2-(4-methyl-pent-3-enyl)-chroman-8-yl]-2-methyl-propan-1-one, 1) and B (1-[5,7-dihydroxy-2-methyl-3-(3-methyl-but-2-enyl)-2-(4-methyl-pent-3-enyl)-chroman- 8-yl]-2-methyl-butan-1-one, 2), have been isolated from the petroleum ether extract of the aerial parts of Hypericum amblycalyx, together with two further compounds (1-[5,7- dihydroxy-2-methyl-2-(4-methyl-pent-3-enyl)-chroman-8-yl]-2-methyl-propan-1-one, 3 and 1-[5,7-dihydroxy-2-methyl-2-(4-methyl-pent-3-enyl)-chroman-8-yl]-2-methyl-butan-1-one, 4), which have been described only as semi-synthetic products. In addition, the known triterpene lup-20(29)-en-3-one was obtained. Structure elucidation was based on 1D and 2D NMR studies, as well as on data derived from mass spectrometry. The four acylphloroglucinol derivatives were evaluated for their cytotoxic and antibacterial activity. All compounds showed moderate cytotoxic activity against KB and Jurkat T cancer cells. Especially compounds 3 and 4 exhibited a strong antibacterial activity against different Gram-positive strains.

Abstract An investigation of the petroleum ether extract from Ixeris chinensis Nakai has led to the isolation of a new compound, 3-O-acetyl-22,28-cyclobauer-7-en-3β-ol (1), together with four known compounds which have been isolated from this plant for the first time, namely taraxast-20-en-3β-ol (2), 3-O-acetyl-taraxast-20-en-3β-ol (3), taraxast-20(30)-en-3β-ol (4), and 3-O-acetyl-taraxast-20(30)- en-3β-ol (5). The structures of the isolated compounds have been elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods including UV, IR, ESI-MS, 1D NMR, 2D NMR techniques, and by comparison with data reported in the literature. All compounds have been evaluated for their activity against various bacteria and shown to give good results

A new acyclic diterpenoid (1) and a new erythroxan diterpenoid (2), together with 4 erythroxan diterpenoids and 3 triterpenoids, have been isolated from the aerial parts of Fagonia mollis. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR data. The cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds was investigated against HL-60 cancer cells.

  Objective: This research is to study the assessment of the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of the essential oil extracted from the aerial parts of Artemisia abrotanum L. that recently grown in Iraq.Methods: The essential oil of A. abrotanum was extracted by hydrodistillation using Clevenger apparatus. This essential oil was tested for antimicrobial activity of five different pathogenic microorganisms (Gram-positive [Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis] and Gram-negative [Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli] bacterial strains) and fungi: Candida albicans using diffusion well agar method. Furthermore, this essential oil was tested for cytotoxic activity using rhabdomyosarcoma cell line, and the growth or inhibition of cancer cells was measured by MTT method.Results: The obtained results show that the antibacterial activity for A. abrotanum against S. aureus was at concentrations 40, 25, and15 μl with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 20 mm, while it showed antibacterial activity against E. coli for four different concentrations of 40, 25, 15, and10 μl with inhibition zone of 16, 12, 14, and 10 mm, respectively, and it showed antifungal activity against C. albicans at four concentrations 40, 25, 15, and10 μl with inhibition zone of 18, 24, 26, and 30 mm, respectively. The cytotoxic activity of the extracted essential oil was showed that the three concentrations of the extract (25, 50, and 100 μg/ml) were all lower significantly as compared to dimethyl sulfoxide group. A significant difference was seen for group 25 with both groups 50 and 100, but no significant difference was seen between the two later. Finally, the antimicrobial and anticancer activity of this plant could be due to its essential oil constituents: Borneol, cymene, camphor, terpineol, eucalyptol, and aromadendrene.Conclusion: The essential oil of A. abrotanum L. has a potent antimicrobial and anticancer effect against the tested microbial organisms and the cancer cells.

Bengkoang has long been used by ancestors as a raw material for cosmetics. In Indonesia, it is usually eaten raw, sometimes with salt, lemon juice and powdered chili. However, scientific evidences that support the use of bengkoang have not been widely published. Phytosterols from the bengkoang root have been isolated and identified based on their NMR spectrum data and mass spectrum. The result of the structure elucidation informed that ß-sitosterol and stigmasterol are major components of phytosterol in bengkoang root. Phytosterol content was about 0.02% of dry weight bengkoang or 2.76 % in petroleum ether extract of bengkoang, with a ratio of ß-sitosterol and stigmasterol (65:35). Therefore, bengkoang can be further exploited as a raw material of phytosterol supplement.

Cissus trifoliata (L.) L belongs to the Vitaceae family and is an important medicinal plant used in Mexico for the management of infectious diseases and tumors. The present study aimed to evaluate the metabolic profile of the stems of C. trifoliata and to correlate the results with their antibacterial and cytotoxic activities. The hexane extract was analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the CHCl3-MeOH and aqueous extracts by ultraperformance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of fly mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS). The antibacterial activity was determined by broth microdilution and the cytotoxicity was evaluated using MTS cell proliferation assay. Forty-six metabolites were putatively identified from the three extracts. Overall, terpenes, flavonoids and stilbenes characterize the metabolic profile. No antibacterial activity was found in any extract against the fifteen bacteria strains tested (MIC >500 µg/mL). However, high cytotoxic activity (IC50 ≤ 30 µg/mL) was found in the hexane and aqueous extracts against hepatocarcinoma and breast cancer cells (Hep3B, HepG2 and MCF7). This is the first report of the bioactive compounds of C. trifoliata stems and their antibacterial and cytotoxic properties. The metabolic profile rich in anticancer compounds correlate with the cytotoxic activity of the extracts from the stems of C. trifoliata. This study shows the antitumor effects of this plant used in the traditional medicine and justifies further research of its anticancer activity.

Objective: Alysicarpus monilifer (Family Papilionaceae) has been used in the Indigenous system of medicine in tumor removal. The present study was designed to isolate and identify the constituent responsible for cytotoxic (anti-tumor) effects of the plant Alysicarpus monilifer. Methods: The plant was powdered and extracted to give a methanolic extract. Initially, Hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanolic fractions of the methanolic extract of the plant were subjected to cytotoxic screening using cell line based assay (MTT assay and NRU assay). The chloroform fraction showed significant cytotoxicity, so it was further subjected to column chromatography, to separate the cytotoxic phytoconstituent. The cell lines selected were breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468) and Liver cancer cells (HepG2 and HLE cell). Results were calculated as percentage growth inhibition with respect to untreated (control) cells versus treated cells. Result: A triterpene, Betulinic acid, was isolated from the aerial parts of Alysicarpus monilifer. The cytotoxic activity of the identified compound against MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, HLE and HepG2 cells was also found to be highly significant with 90% growth inhibition. Conclusion: The triterpene was identified to be betulinic acid, to which the cytotoxic activity can be attributed. It is a first report of isolation of betulinic acid from the Alysicarpus species.

From the Streptomyces spp. 815 and GW4184, four new 4-juglon-2-ylbutyric acid derivatives, the juglomycins G - J (3a, 4a, 4c, 5c), have been isolated and characterised. The structures were derived from the 1D and 2D NMR data and mass spectra and confirmed by comparison with structurally related compounds. The absolute configuration was deduced from the CD spectra. The new natural products exhibited weak antibacterial activity similar to juglomycin A (5a).

The main constituents were: germacrene B (88.5%) and apiol (4.9%). Comparing with the tested bacteria, the growth ofEscherichia coliandKlebsiella pneumoniaestrains was more inhibited by the essential oil ofA. sicula.

A new iridoid, shanzhiol (1), was isolated from the aerial parts of Mussaenda roxburghii. The structure was established by spectroscopic (including 2D NMR) and chemical methods. Shanzhiol (1) showed mild antibacterial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with a MIC of 100 μg/mL by the broth dilution method.
