Background: A professional is an individual who prefers a profession, is specially qualified in its technical aspects, and makes a living with the profession. Objective: This research was conducted to determine the professional values of nurses and the factors affecting them. Methods: This descriptive research evaluated a sample of 97 nurses working in a private hospital in Ankara, Turkey. Data was collected using the demographic form and professional values scale (PVS). Results: Among the nurses in the study sample, 43% had a graduate degree, 84.5% were staff nurses, and 37.2% were surgery, obstetrics, and cardiovascular surgery nurses. The mean score of professional values of nurses in this study was determined to be 4.20 ± 0.55. It was determined that professional values of nurses in the 34-year and older group, including male nurses, those usually working the day shift, those who chose the profession, those with memberships in associations, and those who participated in scientific meetings/seminars, had higher scores for professional values, but this finding was statistically insignificant (P>0.05). Conclusion: The professional values of nurses was found to be above the middle level. In this light, it can be recommended, especially to managers, that training on professional values should be planned for nurses. It is also recommended that nurses receive undergraduate education and other comprehensive studies. In order to achieved a desired position in nursing, nurses must update regularly their scientific knowledge, participate in scientific meetings/seminars, and become members of professional associations.

Introduction Nurses make up the largest portion of the health care system throughout the world, hence, making the profession the backbone of health care. The nursing workforce is made up of both males and females. However, the majority of nurses are predominately females with the number of male nurses reported to be unappreciable. Objective The study therefore aimed to explore the experiences and motivation of male nurses in a tertiary hospital in Ghana. Methods A qualitative descriptive research design was employed to explore the lived experiences of male nurses. A total of 20 male nurses were purposively selected, and in-depth interviews were conducted with a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using content analysis. Results The findings revealed 2 major themes: motivation and experiences of male nurses. The subthemes were individual motivations, external influence, intersecting social reactions and public perceptions, mixed encounters with patients, and satisfaction with the profession. Conclusion Male nurses are motivated to a large extent to be part of the nursing profession but will be deeply involved in the profession if some factors affecting them are addressed. Future studies may address the roles of nurse managers in mentoring more males to be involved in the nursing profession.

Background: Job satisfaction is a major factor in nurse retention and the delivery of high quality care. Hence, aim of this study was to find out the factors affecting job satisfaction among nurses working in the teaching hospital, Chitwan. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional research design was used and a total 135 nurses who were working for at least 3 months in the Chitwan Medical Teaching Hospital were taken as study sample. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the desired sample. Pre-tested structured self-administered questionniare with job satisfaction scale consisting eight domains was used to collect the data. Obtained data were entered into SPSS version 20.0 for window and analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (chi-square test). Results: The findings of the study revealed that more than half (57.85%) of the nurses were satisfied with their job. Nurses’ job satisfaction was higher on organization and administration policies (4.18±0.04) and least on salary and benefits (3.01±0.19) they were receiving from the institution. The significance influencing factors of job satisfaction were professional qualification (p=0.04), total work experience in nursing (p=0.004), working ward/unit (p=0.014), designation (p=0.007), number of patient assigned in general ward (p=<0.001) and leadership style in the ward (p=<0.001). Conclusions: Considerable percentage of nurses are not satisfied with their job. Hence hospital management and professional associations need to address the identified factors to enhance the job satisfaction among nurses working in a teaching hospital.

Students’ satisfaction has impact on retention and financial capacity of institutions. With the objective of assessing the factors affecting international students’ satisfaction, a descriptive research was carried out at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University. The sample size comprising 29 international students and structured questionnaire was administered for data collection. The results indicate that students have high satisfaction for library, contact with teachers, class size, course content, reading materials and administrative services of the University. The results also show that there is low satisfaction of students regarding majority of the university services. The study recommends the need for university authorities to pay particular attention to the factors that affect students’ satisfaction and tailor the university services to meet students’ needs and increase their satisfaction.

121 Background: Several websites present estimated individual surgeon complication rates for surgeons in both the United States and Great Britain. Though some researchers have raised questions as to the validity and appropriateness of these publicly displayed outcome measures, there remains very little research into how the general public may interpret these data to make health care decisions. Methods: We invited attendees of the 2016 Minnesota State Fair who met entry criteria, (adults > 18 years old, English speakers who were able to use a tablet computer) to complete our survey. Demographic data was presented along with various screen shots from online surgeon rating websites. Patients were then asked to interpret these graphics and report complication rates. Some graphics displayed complications rates for one surgeon alone, while others compared multiple surgeons side-by-side. Results: 392 participants completed the survey from a broad geographic distribution from the upper Midwest (179 unique zip codes). Median age was 49 (Interquartile range 28-61), the female:male ratio was 3:2, 57% had completed a college or graduate degree and 85% were Caucasian vs. 15% ethnic minorities. The majority of participants (76%) were able to correctly estimate complication rates when a single surgeon and his or her complication rates were shown, but when respondents were asked to compare/rank multiple surgeons, respondents overestimated complication rates by 5-7 fold, on average, for the lower ranking surgeons and only 15% of respondents could correctly identify the complication rate of the lowest performing surgeon. College graduates and those with a graduate degree were more likely to correctly estimate complication rates compared to participants with less education (odds ratio 1.98 95% CI 1.04-3.75, p = 0.035). Conclusions: Online surgeon rating websites that compare and rank surgeons may lead the general public to drastically overestimate the risk of postoperative complications. These errors in estimating complication rates appear to be reduced amongst those who are college educated and when viewing single surgeon outcomes in the absence of a comparison.

Background. Voluntary occupational therapy organizations fill an important role. However, recruitment and retention can be problematic. Little is known about factors influencing occupational therapists to join/maintain membership in professional associations. Purpose. This study investigated factors influencing occupational therapists’ decision to join/remain members of their association. Method. An electronic survey was carried out and data were analyzed using SPSS software and manual categorization of open-ended comments. Findings. Two hundred and fifty-four therapists responded. Generation of new ideas, opportunities for professional development, self-improvement, maintenance of standards, improvement of the profession, and discounts on equipment/educational opportunities were significant factors in deciding to join the organization. The factors perceived as priorities varied in relation to participants’ year of graduation. Implications. More-customized strategies, reflecting priorities that vary during a therapist’s career path, may need to be employed to best address recruitment and retention across the range of therapists’ needs and goals.
