Peculiarities of seasonal changes of taxonomic structure and number of weevil-beetles (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) of herptobios in Kharkiv urbocenoses (Ukraine)

A total of 54 species in 35 genera of Curculionidae are registered in the urbocenoses of Kharkiv city. Only three species, Exomias pellucidus, Otiorhynchus raucus and Ot. ovatus, are recorded as dominants. Some other species (Urometopus nemorum, Sciaphobus squalidus and Glocianus punctiger) are sporadically noted in some sites as subdominants. The total number of species turned out to be higher in the herpetobios of plantings at periphery (31), slightly lower in private farmlands of the city (21), parks and plantings of the center (17 each), but minimal in suburban forests (11 species). The highest quantity of specimens were observed for the plantations of the center and margins of city: nevertheless, minimal quantity of specimens was registered at parks and woods. The maximum number of species (including all cenoses) was recorded from the end of April to first decade of May (28 species). From May to the end of June 15–18 species were registered. Ten species were recorded at July, and only six species at August. A slight rise was noted from the end of August to mid-September (11 species). In biotopes where Exomias pellucidus appeared to be the monodominant, the seasonal dynamic density of weevils reached a peak at late May or early June, but the significant decline was observed from early June to July. At the sites with several dominants, two or three peaks were registered: at spring (May) and at mid-summer (end of June or beginning of July). Furthermore, the number of weevils decreased gradually, but some species of Curculionidae were rather abundant even from the end of summer to September–October. The spring increase is reasoned by high density of species in the genus Otiorhynchus; the peak in early summer (maximum) is caused by the increased activity of majority of dominant species; the autumn peak is also caused by the high number of species of the genus Otiorhynchus. The level of sex index (by the example of E. pellucidus) differed significantly at all plots. It was higher for the plantations at the periphery of the city (0.70), and it was minimal at private farmlands (0.20). Relative conjugacy of sex index and dynamic density were not observed: the maximum abundances of quantity of Curculionidae were recorded 20–30 days earlier than the maximal numbers of the sex index.

A total of 99 species from 35 genera of Carabidae have been registered in the urban cenoses of Kharkiv. The eudominants were Harpalus affinis Schrank, 1781, H. griseus Panzer, 1797, H. rufipes De Geer, 1774. The dominants included 17 species: Notiophilus biguttatus Fabricius, 1779, N. germinyi Fauvel, 1863, Сarabus nemoralis O.Müller, 1764, Broscus cephalotes Linnaeus, 1758, Asaphidion flavipes Linnaeus, 1761, Poecilus versicolor Sturm, 1824, Pterostichus melanarius Illiger, 1798, Calathus ambiguus Paykull, 1790, C. fuscipes Goeze, 1777, Amara apricaria Paykull, 1790, A. bifrons Gyllenhal, 1810, Harpalus distinguendus Duftschmid, 1812, H. modestus Dejean, 1829, H. smaragdinus Duftschmid, 1812, H. tardus Panzer, 1797, H. xanthopus winkleri Schauberger, 1923, Panagaeus bipustulatus Fabricius, 1775. Other species are registered as rare. The total number of species was higher at household plots (46) and in the city outskirts (41 species). Fewer species are registered in cities parks, the Forest Park, and the plots of the center (33–35 species). The maximum number of species (for all cenoses) is observed in May (from 45 to 56 species depending on the year). In June and the first half of July, the species diversity decreases (to 40–42), and in August, 14– 39 species were registered. In September, a total of 25–27 species were recorded, and in the first half of October only 4–14 species. The maximum dynamic density was registered at the household plots and in the city outskirts (0.13–0.73 specimen / 1 trap-day), the minimum density of carabids was observed in the Forest Park and the plantings in the center of the city (0.03–0.06 specimen / 1 trap-day). The increase in the number of carabids began from the second half of April to mid-May, with a peak at the end of the latter month or in the first decade of June. The decline of carabids population density was registered in late June – early July, mainly in the parks. In the household plots, the plots of the center and in the city outskirts, the maximal density was registered in July – August, mainly due to increased activity of species of the genus Harpalus. In September, the density of carabids decreased sharply, and from the last decade of September until the first half of October, single individuals were observed. When comparing the seasonal changes of the sex index and the dynamic density of the dominant species (for example, C. nemoralis), the maximum population density was observed 10–20 days earlier than the maximal level of sex index.

Abstract The subject of this study is to analyse changes in the taxonomic structure and development intensity of phytoplankton and, thus, to determine the diversity of cyanobacteria and algae along with the trophy state of two oxbow lakes in the Wrocław area (south-western Poland). The analysis of samples and data from previous years showed a total of 244 cyanobacteria and algae species within these two lakes. The species composition changed significantly in both of them – there were found 90 species new to the studied flora (37% of current flora) and 74 species which were previously recorded. The diversity of cyanobacteria and algae reflects the conditions in these water bodies and each change in ecological conditions (e.g., anthropological dangers) is reflected by a change in the phytoplankton assemblage structure. Consequently, knowledge of taxonomic diversity is useful in monitoring water bodies to preserve them in good conditions. Both studied oxbow lakes belong to eutrophic ecosystems as evidenced by their phycoflora, which is rich in species characteristic of high-trophy water, and recorded water blooms. The analysis of changes in cyanobacterial and algal assemblages in these lakes was also a basis for determining their trophy and finding it to be progressively eutrophic. Regular phycological studies of Wrocław numerous water bodies are essential and, in the future, will allow us to protect them and to react quickly in case of danger to these ecosystems. It will also allow us to study eutrophication processes in the water bodies that are crucial to the city.

Abstract Results of systematic movement studies carried out by means of an automatic camera on Unteraargletscher since 1969 are discussed together with supplementary theodolite measurements made at shorter intervals and over a longer section of the glacier. In addition to the typical spring/early summer maximum of velocity known from other glaciers, an upward movement of up to 0.6 m has been recorded at the beginning of the melt season. It was followed, after a few fluctuations of the vertical velocity, by an equal but slower downward movement which continued at an almost constant rate for about three months. Possible explanations of the uplift are discussed, the most satisfactory explanation being water storage at the bed. The observations then suggest that this storage system is efficiently connected with the main subglacial drainage channels only during times of very high water pressure in the channels. Detailed measurements showed that the times of maximum horizontal velocity coincided with the times of maximum upward velocity rather than with the times when the elevation of the surveyed poles had reached a maximum. On the basis of the hypothesis of water storage at the bed this finding means that the sliding velocity is influenced mainly by the subglacial water pressure and the actual, transient stage of cavity development, while the amount of stored water is of lesser influence.

The benefits of park therapy have been investigated in young adults, but rarely for middle-aged and older adults. This study evaluates the physiological and psychological effects of walking in urban parks and park therapy images in winter, spring, and early summer. The experiments were implemented in two walking courses in the urban park in Japan and involved 12 middle-aged and older adults. Participants walked on walking courses in an urban park and city street for 11–15 min. Their heart rate and blood pressure were evaluated to determine physiological responses. The Profile of Mood States (POMS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Landscape Image Sketching Technique (LIST) were used to determine psychological responses and spatial conditions. Walking in an urban park exhibited lower heart rates and blood pressure as compared to walking in the city. It was congruent with lowered negative moods, total mood disturbance (TMD) scores, and state anxiety, while the higher positive mood was observed in the urban parks as compared to the city. Images in winter displayed trees, relaxation, and comfort; in spring, water, activity, people, surrounding place, and recreational space; and in early summer, greenery, lawn, and broadness. In conclusion, walking in urban parks leads to physiological, psychological relaxation, and varied landscape appreciation.

Seasonal trends of heat pulse velocity in the trunks of 55-year-old ponderosa pine (Pinusponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco) trees showed large yearly variations related to weather patterns. Onset of sap movement in the spring, seasonal variations, and summer declines in response to decreasing moisture were similar for Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine. When soil moisture was not limiting, rates of heat pulse velocity in both species were significantly related to air temperature, solar radiation, and vapor pressure deficit. As soil moisture decreased during the summer, rates of heat pulse velocity no longer followed evaporative demand. In both species, sap movement also occurred at night. Diurnal trends of heat pulse velocity also were similar in both species. During early summer, maximum heat pulse velocity occurred at midday; in the fall, maximum rates occurred earlier. The similarity of seasonal and diurnal trends of heat pulse velocity and responses to variation in site conditions suggest that on the site studied, transpiration behavior in ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir trees generally is similar.

It is known that the flora reacts on changing of composition climatic factors. Changing the composition of the head of the nepotistic spectrum, which is determined by the type of flora (first triada). Samara Region is located in Fab-zone, which in the territory of the Volga basin covers Saratov, Samara, Ulyanovsk region and the Republic of Tatarstan. In the north-western part of the Volga basin it gradually becomes Ros-zone. Changes in the composition of flora has discrete-continuous in nature. Flora in different parts of Fab-zone has its own characteristics, which is reflected in the taxonomic parameters. Most of the Samara Region is located in Zavolzhie, which forms the border of natural zones: forest-steppe and steppe. The natural conditions of these territories have their differences, and, therefore, differ in the parameters flora. The article reveals differences in the taxonomic structure of the flora of the steppe and forest-steppe part of the Samara region. These differences manifest themselves in different share of participation Fabaceae and Rosaceae. In the steppes of Samara Zavolzhja weakened the role of the family Rosaceae and enhanced Chenopodiaceae. Taxonomic analysis shows that the composition of the leading families first triad of the spectrum depends on the number of species in the description. The more species, the greater the likelihood that established triad leading families, corresponding to the zone. If the number of species in the description 500, then the leading triads stabilized.

The sphere of life of a large city includes forests as a natural resource and areas of its expansion and now they serve to implement modern eco-trends. In the evolution of Lviv we can distinguish several stages of relation to forested areas: 1 - exemption from forests of areas suitable for farming, horticulture and construction; 2 – the early 19th century. - planting of new forests for economic and rehabilitation purposes; 3 - the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - the development of the recreational function of forests under the influence of hygienists, especially at water sources; 4 - the end of the 19th century and before 1939 - the development of the city of Lviv with new streets and compact plots according to the urban concepts of "villa in the park" and "garden city", which are wedged into the forest park areas; 5 - the second half of the 20th century. The rapid territorial development of industrial Lviv causes the emergence of large residential areas on the outskirts of the city. According to strict regulatory requirements for providing residents with green areas, part of the suburban forests were allocated for the establishment of local parks. A trade union recreation centers are developing around the city; 6 - 1980s - under the influence of the concept of a polarized landscape in conditions of state ownership of land and its resources, in suburban forests and in the city, separate plots with unique characteristics are distinguished, on the basis of which objects of nature reserve fund are created; 7 - from the 1990s and until now - the spreading of the city and the defragmentation of forests are observed. At the same time, the creation of new nature reserve facilities in Lviv and in the suburban area were performed as well as the formation of new reserves and their inclusion into European ecological networks. At the same time, the process of permanent alienation of forest areas in favor of the spread of development is intensifying. The most vulnerable are the territories of Bryukhovychi and Vynnyky forest parks, which are fully included in the united territorial community of Lviv approved in 2020.

Biodiversity of aquatic organisms is formed under the influence of not only natural, but also anthropogenic factors. In this work, the influence of the flow velocity, river size, flow regulation and urbanization on various groups of aquatic organisms was studied in several lowland rivers. The study was conducted in 2013 on six tributaries of the Upper Sukhona River. Five sampling sites were in different parts of the Vologda River and five sites on small rivers, Losta, Lukhta, Komya, Chernyj Shingar, and Belyj Shingar (one site per river). Phytoplankton, zooplankton and zoobenthos were sampled six times, from April to October, and macrophytes were studied in August. In total, 469 species of aquatic organisms were found in the tributaries of the Upper Sukhona River, belonging to the following phyla: Cyanophyta (5 species), Chrysophyta (8), Bacillariophyta (62), Xanthophyta (1), Cryptophyta (10), Dinophyta (4), Euglenophyta (12), Chlorophyta (17), Streptophyta (1), Bryophyta (2), Marchantiophyta (3), Equisetophyta (1), Magnoliophyta (63), Rotifera (22), Cnidaria (1), Platyhelmintes (1), Annelida (29), Mollusca (33), Arthropoda (194). The maximum number of species was found in the Vologda River, the largest of all the tributaries. The number of zoobenthos species was similar at different sites in the Vologda River and in the small rivers. The number of species of other groups of aquatic organisms in the small rivers was lower than those registered in the Vologda River. The greatest number of macrophyte and zoobenthos species was recorded in the Upper Vologda River and Belyj Shingar River, where the flow is strong all the year round. The greatest number of phyto- and zooplankton species was found at the extra-city sites where current is almost absent. In the dam backwater, species richness was higher than that registered downstream of the dam. At the same time, the species richness of macrophytes and zoobenthos in the dam backwater was lower. The smallest number of species was found in the Vologda River, downstream of the city of Vologda. Decreases in the species richness and Shannon’s biodiversity index were witnessed in the Vologda River city site and in the small rivers, as they get closer to the city. Cluster analyses performed for the studied groups of aquatic organisms showed dissimilar results; however, the studied sites on the Vologda River having the highest anthropogenic load formed a cluster. Aquatic organisms of the Upper Sukhona tributaries experience both natural (flow velocity and size of the watercourse) and anthropogenic factors (proximity to the city and flow regulation).

Ornamental shrubs are one of the elements of the formation of the park environment and an integral part of urban landscaping. The paper presents the results of studying the species diversity of shrubs in park plantations in the city of Voronezh. The range includes more than 30 species, decorative forms and varieties of plants. Deciduous species are predominant, while coniferous species account for not much more than 10 %. Deciduous shrubs growing in the parks of the city of Voronezh belong to 14 families. Among them, there are beautiful flowering and decorative deciduous species, as well as plants with attractive fruits. Coniferous species belong to two families-pine and cypress. The cypress family is characterized by the greatest species (form, variety) diversity. The most popular types and varieties of coniferous trees are Western thuja "Smaragd", Western thuja "Danika", Cossack juniper, Cossack juniper"Tamariscifolia". The main types of shrub plantings in park stands are hedges and row plantings. The most common hedges are made of brilliant dogwood and Wanguttaspirea. Less often, groups and tapeworms are used in park plantings. The analysis of the geographical origin of shrubs showed that the largest number of species are introduced − their participation is more than 90%, the share of local species is less than 10%.
