Both legal and religious responsibilities have a positive and a negative aspect of implementation. The reasons for the contradictions between the norms of religion are due to the following factors: uneven development and change of legal and religious norms, the lack of religious regulation of radical ways to change existing religious rules of conduct; features of the content of the legal norms themselves. The norms of religion are more related to the requirements of duties and prohibitions, and to a lesser extent to permission. The definition of religious actors is given and the existing religious actors and their role in the regulation of religious relations are considered. Also, when studying the spheres of activity of one or another, the following characteristics are identified: religious actors in defending their interests are sometimes not able to directly influence the adoption of specific political decisions; they achieve a systemic effect, which consists in “the dissemination of certain knowledge and values, raising awareness of the problem and changing the mass attitude to it, the development of public institutions”. As intercultural, intercivilizational and interreligious interactions intensify, such actors of world politics as representatives of traditional world religions begin to play a special role. Transnational religious actors are often the most authoritative participants in world processes. Religious actors are able to influence the values, behavior and collective choices of large groups of people.

The goal of this article is to understand the role of religious activists in world politics from an international relations (IR) perspective. The paper proposes a critical theory of religion and encourages researchers to accept individual religiosity, class, and identity in the study of religious actors. The paper develops three avenues of inquiry. First, a better typology of religious actors in world politics is needed to classify them in their political and social contexts. Second, citing the example of Turkey’s Hizmet Movement of Fethullah Gülen, the central role played by economic engagement is analyzed from a neo-Gramscian perspective in International Political Economy (IPE). In so doing, Hizmet is presented as a non-western expression of neoliberal globalization and as part of the “globalizing elite.” Lastly, Hizmet’s international activities are presented as potentially having unforeseen consequences in the light of its creation and reproduction as a transnational social space.

The study consists of four parts. The first part is devoted to the beginnings of culturallinguistics in Poland, connected with the Wrocław-based programme for research on Polishnational culture, the emergence of the “Language and Culture” research network (and apublication series with the same title), and the launch of the Lublin-based journal“Etnolingwistyka” in 1988. The second part contains examples of linguistic facts being viewedin cultural perspective, with a special role of the lexicon as the “mirror of culture”. Part threepresents a repertoire of seven conceptual constructs proposed in Lublin cognitiveethnolinguistics (linguistic worldview, stereotypes as cultural concepts, cognitive definition, viewpoint and interpretive perspective, profiling of base images, values, and the experiencing, conceptualizing, and speaking subject). Finally, the fourth part illustrates the application ofthis theoretical framework in an analysis of the Polish cultural concept of PRACA ‘work’.

World politics today is admittedly bipolar, and it seems destined to remain so within the foreseeable future. Beset by its sustained tension, Americans have been led to debate, sometimes acrimoniously, the proper foundations, scope, and content of an effective foreign policy. Since presumably the central theme and central purpose of this debate is the definition of what constitutes the American national interest, the first objective is to define the idea of national interest. Thereafter it is necessary to draw proper deductions relevant to the total world situation, and in turn to apply these deductions as policy to the forces there at work. These forces—political, economic, ideological, and military—in their interconnectedness collectively constitute the raw materials for assessment, judgment, planning, and action in our policy-making.Resultant differences of opinion therefore can take place at different levels. Initially there are vastly divergent concepts of the characteristics of a nation, of the role of nations in the world, and of the nature of interests proper to a nation. The scope of these divergencies is often hidden by our tendency to find in the term “national interest” connotations of particularism, of exclusiveness, of the nation as against, or superior to, the rest of the world.

Purpose Official statistics on the output of the construction industry capture on-site activities of contractors and sub-contractors; however, the role of the industry linking suppliers of materials, machinery, products, services and other inputs is also widely recognised. These two views have been called broad and narrow, with the narrow industry defined as on-site work and the broad industry as the supply chain of materials, products and assemblies, and professional services. An argument is made for using the term “built environment sector” (BES) for the broad industry definition of construction. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Construction industry statistics capture the on-site activities of contractors and sub-contractors. This paper reviews research that adds to construction output the contributions of suppliers of materials, machinery and equipment, products and components, professional services and other inputs required to deliver the buildings and structures that make up the built environment. Findings The same term, “construction”, has been used in a number of ways in different definitional studies of the narrow and broad industry. The term that best encompasses the large number and range of participants in the creation and maintenance of the built environment, from suppliers to end users, is the BES. Research limitations/implications Construction economics makes an important contribution to researching the macroeconomic role of the BES. There is also a special role for construction economics in researching both the boundaries of the BES and the data available on the industries that contribute to the BES. Practical implications Measuring the BES would improve the understanding of its macroeconomic role and significance. Social implications Measuring the BES would contribute to city policies and urban planning. Originality/value The paper proposes a new approach to defining and measuring the industries that contribute to the production, maintenance and management of the built environment. It introduces a new name for the combination of those industries.
