The effect of the concentration of monodiglycerides, beeswax and sorbitan monostearate (SMS) on the thermal behavior of oleogels prepared from avocado oil, as well as the effect of the cooling rate on the onset temperature (Tonset) and the crystallization temperature (Tc), were evaluated by DSC and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the structuring agents have a significant effect (P<0.05) on the Tc and Tonset, which demonstrated their ability to form solid lipids. Moreover, it was found that the presence of SMS decreased the Tc and Tonset, possibly due to their cocrystallization process. It was found only in the presence of the polymorphic form b' in the oleogels prepared. The Tc varied between 1.6 and 51.4 °C and Tonset between 3.9 and 53.8 °C.

The phase formation in oxide-sulphidic systems was studied with the use of X-ray diffraction, mineralography, combined thermogravimetry and calorimetry, in addition to Х-ray spectral microanalysis. The purpose of this work was to estimate the effect of cooling rate of melts in FeOx-SiO2-Cu2O-ZnO-FeS systems on structure and content of the resulting phases. Test subjects were two samples having following compositions (wt. %): I - 40.5 Fe, 2.41 S, 0.87 Cu, 3.87 Zn, 32.1 SiO2 and II - 40.7 Fe, 3.05 S, 8.55 Cu, 4.1 Zn and 19.5 SiO2. Cooling rate of the melts was changed from 0.3 up to 900оС/s.

In this study, the effect of SBR concentration (10 Phr, 20 Phr & 30 Phr ) on the thermal behavior of EPDM/SBR blends was studied. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to check weight loss of samples as function of temperature by heating upto 600°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed to determine quality and % crystallinity of the elastomer blends. It was seen that % crystallinity improved with an increase in the content of SBR in EPDM/SBR blends. TGA revealed that the thermal stability of EPDM/SBR blends has improved by 17% than neat EPDM. Carbon nano-coatings produced by sputtering have no beneficial influence on thermal behaviour of elastomers.

Ti-based alloys present unique properties and hence, are employed in several industrial segments. Among Ti alloys, β type alloys form one of the most versatile classes of materials in relation to processing, microstructure and mechanical properties. It is well known that heat treatment of Ti alloys plays an important role in determining their microstructure and mechanical behavior. The aim of this work is to analyze microstructure and phases formed during cooling of β Ti-Nb-Sn alloy through different cooling rates. Initially, samples of Ti-Nb-Sn system were prepared through arc melting furnace. After, they were subjected to continuous cooling experiments to evaluate conditions for obtaining metastable phases. Microstructure analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction were performed in order to evaluate phase transformations. Depending on the cooling rate and composition, α” martensite, ω phase and β phase were obtained. Elastic modulus has been found to decrease as the amount of Sn was increased.

AbstractFusion zone microstructures of an electron beam (EB) welded XDt m Ti–48at%Al + 6.5 vol% TiB2 alloy revealed plate-like precipitates which were absent in the base metal. The volume fraction of this phase increased with increasing cooling rate and correlated with increased weld cracking frequency. To determine whether this phase was a product of solidification from the melt or a product of a solid-state transformation, the microstructures of the welds were compared to those of samples cycled in a Gleeble 1500/20 Thermal-Mechanical Test System which was programmed to simulate the solid-state portion of the weld cooling rates (as predicted by a Rosenthal analysis). The microstructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical and by scanning electron microscopy. The plate-like phase found in the weld microstructures was identified as TiB2 occurring upon rapid solidification of the melted weld metal.

Praziquantel (PZQ) is the first-line drug used against schistosomiasis, one of the most common parasitic diseases in the world. A series of crystalline structures including two new polymorphs of the pure drug and a series of cocrystals of PZQ have been discovered and deposited in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). This work adds to the list of multicomponent forms of PZQ a relevant example of a racemic hemihydrate (PZQ-HH), obtainable from commercial PZQ (polymorphic Form A) through mechanochemistry. Noteworthy, the formation of the new hemihydrate strongly depends on the initial polymorphic form of PZQ and on the experimental conditions used. The new PZQ-HH has been fully characterized by means of HPLC, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Hot-Stage Microscopy (SEM), Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), FT-IR, polarimetry, solid-state NMR (SS-NMR), solubility and intrinsic dissolution rate (IDR), and in vitro tests on Schistosoma mansoni adults. The crystal structure was solved from the powder X-ray diffraction pattern and validated by periodic-DFT calculations. The new bioactive hemihydrate was physically stable for three months and showed peculiar biopharmaceutical features including enhanced solubility and a double intrinsic dissolution rate in water in comparison to the commercially available PZQ Form A.

Calcium carbonate is a compound existing in living organisms and produced for many biomedical applications. In this work, calcium carbonate was synthesized by a CO2 bubbling method using ammonia as a CO2 absorption promotor. Glucose, fructose, sucrose, and trehalose were added into the reaction mixture to modify characteristics of precipitated calcium carbonate particles. To determine the polymorphic form of produced calcium carbonate particles, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were performed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to estimate the size and shape of produced particles. Mixtures of vaterite and calcite were synthesized in all experiments. The percentage content of the vaterite in the samples depended on used additive. The highest concentration of vaterite (90%) was produced from a solution containing sucrose, while the lowest concentration (2%) was when fructose was added. Saccharides affected the rate of CO2 absorption, which resulted in a change in the precipitation rate and, therefore, the polymorphic composition of calcium carbonate obtained in the presence of saccharides was more varied.

New noncovalent bonding polymer/clay hybrids were prepared, including the polymer poly(tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine) (poly-TMPD). Polymerization occurred in the interlayer space of clay mineral successively after intercalation of monomers. Two types of clay minerals with different surface properties—a hydrophilic lithium fluorotaeniolite (TN) and four kinds of organophilic fluorotaeniolites (org-TNs)—were used as the hosts. Powder x-ray diffraction results showed an increase of 0.7–1.0 nm in the basal spacings, indicating the formation of poly–TMPD in the interlayer space of the hosts. Intercalative polymerization was also supported by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The orientation of the poly-TMPD and thermal behavior were also discussed.

AbstractThe effect of solid emulsifiers, added at the level of 10%, on the lattice parameters of tristearin and trilaurin, has been studied by powder X-ray diffraction method. The presence of sorbitan monostearate and glycerol-l-stearate affects slightly the lattice constant a in tristearin; on the other hand, although sorbitan monostearate causes an increase in a of trilaurin, glycerol-l-stearate does not. The presence of sorbitan monolaurate and glycerol-l-laurate affect a of trilaurin similarly to the long chain emulsifiers.A correlation between the effect on a and the increase in melting point has been found.The presence of the emulsifier does not alter drastically the lattice dimensions of the fat. The slight dissimilarity in crystal structure between tristearin and trilaurin is confirmed by the diverse effects of the emulsifiers on the internal structure of the fat.
