Influence of electropulsing on nucleation during phase transformation

Phase transformation about precipitation in a Cu–Zn alloy was studied. It was found that with an electropulsing treatment the number of nuclei during phase transformation could be dramatically enhanced and nucleation of precipitates was more homogeneous. The phenomena did not result from the effect of rapid heating or rapid cooling during electropulsing but resulted from the electric current itself. The results were in good agreement with the theoretical model that electric current can increase nucleation by decreasing the thermodynamic barrier during phase transformation.

We are interested in the energetic cost of a martensitic inclusion of volume V in austenite for the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transformation. In contrast with the work of Knüpfer, Kohn and Otto (Commun. Pure Appl. Math.66 (2013), 867–904), we consider a domain with a corner and obtain a better scaling law for the minimal energy (Emin ∼ min(V2/3, V7/9)). Our predictions are in good agreement with physical experiments where nucleation of martensite is usually observed near the corners of the specimen.

Abstract The propagation of Rayleigh waves with periods of 0.4 to 2.0 seconds across the Cincinnati arch is investigated. The region of investigation includes southern Indiana and Ohio and northern Kentucky. The experimental data for all paths are fitted by a three-layer model of varying layer thickness but of fixed velocity in each layer. The resulting inferred structural picture is in good agreement with the known basement trends of the region. The velocities of the best fitting theoretical model agree well with velocity-depth data from a well in southern Indiana.

In the present work Miedema model has been developed, and the formation enthalpy of Mg-Zn alloys and the activity curve of Zn in Mg-Zn alloy at 1000K have been calculated according to the Miedema model. The calculation results showed that the formation enthalpy of Mg-Zn was small, and the excess entropy attributes a lot to the result. When excess enthopy was considered, the calculation results were found to be in good agreement with the experimental values.

ABSTRACTTransient photoconductive response of undoped a-Si:H has been studied; the changes were analysed between two slightly different steady-state illumination conditions, at room temperature. A theoretical model is developed to describe transient photoconductivity; it yields good agreement with the measured curves for a whole range of light intensities. Numerical evaluations allows one to extract the recombination time of electrons. Comparison with steady-state photoconductivity yields a band mobility of free electrons between 0.1 and 6 cm2V−1s−1, depending upon sample quality.

The residual stress distributions of the forgings after both water-cooling and air-cooling were measured experimentally. The residual stress occurring during the heat-treatment was also simulated considering the phase transformation and the transformation plasticity. A comparison of the experiments with the simulations showed a good agreement. These results shows that the transformation plastic strain plays an important role in the heat treatment of large forged shafts.
