Currently skipjack tuna resources have been showing signs of over fishing. Indications were, among others, characterized by a decrease in the catch and the size of the individual, changes in the composition of the catch and the trend of increasing proportions of several types of small fish. Length frequency data collected from March until December 2007 amounted 4,293. Length and weight measurements to determine the length and weight relationship of fish conducted in March, May, July, and December 2007 with a total sample was 296. This paper presents information about the distribution of length and weight, length and weight relationship and the length at first capture (Lc) caught by pole and liner operating in theBanda Sea. The analysis showed that the skipjack tuna has a long range between 30-78 cmFL and weight range between 600-4300 g. Regression analysis of length and weight relationship equation was W=0.0485 L2.751, R2=0.9427 with regression coefficient (r)=0.9709, and slope value (b)=2.751. Result show that the growth pattern of skipjack tuna was negative allometric. The length at first captured (Lc) of skipjack was 41.7 cmFL.

Abstract Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) is an important pelagic fish species caught in tropical and subtropical waters of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans. Skipjack tuna (K. pelamis) is also a high economic fisheries resource in Prigi waters which is caught by troll line. High market demand results in high levels of exploitation. This study aimed to identify the length-weight relationship and biological reproduction of skipjack tuna in the Prigi waters. The research was conducted in the sampling period between December 2019 - April 2020 with total samples obtained as much as 1642 fish and was analyzed using linear regression. The results informed that the length-weight relationship of skipjack tuna was positive allometric with equation W=0.007FL3.223 which means that the fish has a fat body. The sex ratio between male and female fish is 1:1. While gonad maturity level obtained in this study is mostly in GML 1 and GML 2 which indicates that the catches were dominated by immature fish, so it is necessary to limit fishing effort so that sustainability of the skipjack tuna (K. pelamis) resource can be managed.

This paper provides the first comprehensive information on the Length-Weight Relationship (LWR) of Scoranza bleak (Alburnus scoranza) from the Lake Skadar. The results of the study showed that LWR was different in young and older individual fish. We concluded that no single regression would adequately describe the length-weight relationship for  Scoranza bleak in the winter period. Small fish, up to one year old, have positive allometric growth whereas older and larger, negative. The results of this study show that the animals grow equally in the same pattern in both localities (Raduš and Karuč) which shows that there are no two stocks as it was assumed in the past. The condition factor in young Scoranza bleaks was lower than in the elderly. Condition factor decreased significantly during the winter period in older specimens. Based on this, we conclude that Scoranza bleak during the winter is poorly fed/starved, which causes a decrease in the condition factor.Analysis of the total sample, of any species, cannot show by what rule the population grows, if infrapopulation variability is present, because the studied value will depend on the number of individual subgroups. If no infra-population variability is found, the required parameter for the entire population can be calculated. In order to determine population variability, multiple groups must be singled out. Preferably, the number of stratified samples should be at least 6 so that correlation-regression analysis can be performed. In stratified samples, the number of individuals should be between 30-40, for any parameter, in order to compare their mean values. The results of the study show that 50 individuals are sufficient for accurate determination of LWR (or ???? and b, ???? is a constant coefficient and b is the slope of the curve.), when it is determined that there is no intrapopulation variability.

The Bone Bay is part of Fisheries Management Zone WPPI 713 that covers Makassar strait, Flores sea and Bali sea. To such vast marinearea, fisheries management can be started from smaller region, e.g. embayment waters. Biological characteristics of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonuspelamis) are some of important information for developing fisheries management in the area. This research was aimed to determine length-weight relationship, size composititon, growth pattern and biologically feasible size of the fish. Data were obtained from fish caught byfisherman from Januari to December 2007. The bay was divided into three study areas, i.e. Northern, Centre and Southern Zones. The bcoefficients for length-weight relationship in the three zones were equal 3 [not significant]. The average fork-length (FL) in each zoneshowed similar trends: increased from January to June, then stabilized until December. Using von Bertalanffy’s growth model, the maximumFL (L ∞ of 759.75 mm is estimated for fish at age of 84 months. The length at first maturity of the fish is 465 mm (FL).

Abstract Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) is an essential part of tuna, skipjack tuna, and mackerel tuna trades in Indonesia as the species is an economic commodity with export value. Tomini Bay is one of the areas in Indonesia with intensive skipjack tuna exploitation activities using purse seine fleets. Such a high fishing rate requires management efforts to maintain the species population’s sustainability. This study was conducted in April 2018–December 2019 at a fish landing site in Gorontalo City with a total sample of 8,833 skipjack tunas. The population dynamics, recruitment, and utilization rate were analyzed using FISAT II application and ELEFAN program. The results showed that the length at first capture (Lc) was 31.8 cmFL (in 2018) to 32.2 cmFL (in 2019) at around 1.3 year old. The fish recruitment occurred all year long, peaking in May at 16.12%. In addition, the utilization rate (E) of the species was 0.47, meaning that the species was already moderate to fully exploited. The suggested practical management efforts to maintain the population of the skipjack tunas in the area are to stop the fishing efforts from growing and control the size of the mesh for fishing.

Title (Bahasa Indonesia): Pendugaan pertama matang kelamin dan pertumbuhan alometri ikan cakalang, Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus, 1758), yang didaratkan di Pulau Ternate Skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus, 1758), is a very important species for Indonesian fisheries.  A total of 462 specimens (254 males and 208 females) collected from fish landings in Ternate Island from November 2013 to April 2014 were used to estimate length at first sexual maturity, length-weight relationship, and length-head circumference relationship. The length at first sexual maturity (FL50) was 489.68 mm. The length-weight relationship equations were  W = 0.0001*FL2.7232 for males and W = 0.0002*FL2.6595 for females, respectively. Student’s t-test indicated significant deviation of ‘b’ from ‘3’ towards negative allometric growth (p< 0.05).  The length-head circumference relationship equations were HC = 0.5453*FL1.0263for males and HC = 0.6519*FL0.9985for females, respectively. Student’s t-test indicated no significant deviation of ‘b’ from ‘1’ towards isometric growth (p> 0.05).  Analysis of covariance showed that there was no significant difference between sexes (p> 0.05) for both relationships. Hence, a common length-weight relationship and a common length-head circumference relationship can be derived using pooled data of both sexes.

Abstract Converting length frequencies into age frequencies is an important component of a fisheries assessment. In this paper we use a length frequency analysis (LFA) to estimate birthdates after converting length data into catch-at-age, and use simulation studies to compare model-selection criteria and to examine the reliability of the resulting estimates. Deviance and an adaptation of the Akaike Information Criterion performed best. LFA results in useful estimates of birthdates and of catch-at-age if reliable length frequency data and estimates of growth parameters are available. The analysis is applied to skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) caught in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Although spawning is reported to be seasonal in subtropical waters, the birthdates of the fish caught there were spread uniformly across the year. Young skipjack become vulnerable to fishing mainly in the first quarter of each year. Recruitment of strong year classes did not affect fishery yields equally in the Southwest Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea, so the assumption of a unit western stock for management purposes and the stock structure of skipjack in the Atlantic need further evaluation.

In this study, the length-weight relationships (LWR) were estimated for six fish species captured during prawn fishing in the Lower Amazon region (Pará, Brazil). Prawn fishing boosts the socioeconomic development of riverine communities and is a relevant activity as a source of income and subsistence in this region. In addition, we registered new LWRs for the species Ossancora punctata and Hypoptopoma elongatum. The samplings were performed in prawn catches monthly from February 2018 to January 2019, using a “matapi”, which consists of a semi‑fixed trap that has a galvanized iron structure (2.5 m height by 2.0 m in length) and nylon mesh (1.40 x 1.60 mm mesh), and has two tapered openings to facilitate the entry and trapping of the prawn. The results show that 75% of the fish caught as prawn bycatches had not yet reached sexual maturity. Thus, it is clear that fisheries need to develop fishing gear that allow small fish to escape from the traps during the prawn fishery.

The length-weight relationship and variation of condition factor in relation to the total length (TL) of Trachurus trachurus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner, 1868) were studied. Samples were collected in the eastern Adriatic Sea using bottom-trawl during 2008 and 2009. The b values for males, females and total sample showed that the growth of T. trachurus was isometric, i.e. equal in length and weight. The growth of the males and females of T. mediterraneus was positively allometric while the total sample (males, female and immature) showed isometric growth. The condition factor was calculated indicating the smallest values in immature specimens. The highest values of condition factor for males and females of both species were observed in the range of TL from 16 to 19 cm and 31 to 33 cm, respectively.
