This article describes how a recently refined visual ethnographic research method, “narrated photography,” contributes to the study of religion. We argue that this qualitative research method is particularly useful for studies of lived religion and demonstrate this through examples drawn from a study the sacred among young Polish migrants to England. Narrated photography, which entails asking people to photograph what is personally significant to them and then to narrate the image, generates visual and textual material that mediates the subjective. Through using this method we discovered that family was considered to be sacred, both in terms of links to religious practice and a desire for a secure home which family relationships provide. Additionally, narrated photography has the potential to expand our conceptions of lived religion through the inclusion of visual material culture and the visual context of the research participants. In this case the data revealed that the Polish young people view structures within their landscape through a particularly Polish Catholic lens. These findings shed light on the religious tensions that migrants encounter in everyday life.

Based on comparative ethnographic research in four countries and three continents, Butinage: The Art of Religious Mobility explores the notion of "religious butinage" as a conceptual framework intended to shed light on the dynamics of everyday religious practice. Derived from the French word butiner, which refers to the foraging activity of bees and other pollinating insects, this term is employed by the authors metaphorically to refer to the "to-ing and fro-ing" of believers between religious institutions.

This research was conducted with a view to ascertaining the perceptions, feelings, and thoughts of the women who care for patients with schizophrenia regarding the challenges they face and stigma. This research was conducted by using qualitative research method. To this end, in-depth interviews were made with 10 women who care for schizophrenia patients. As a result of the research, it was found out that the women who care for patients often care of the patient on their own, and thus, they have some psychosocial challenges. The disease negatively affects family relationships, but some families, on the contrary, have positive changes in their relationships. The parents accuse themselves as they are the cause of the disease and they are accused by the social circles. The women who care for patients are exposed to stigma during almost the all processes of the disease and some women internalize being stigmatized and they mostly tend to hide the disease in order to cope with the stigma.

Ethnography is a powerful qualitative research method used to understand research informants’ perspectives on a health-related topic. Developed and pioneered by anthropologists, this method has become an important tool across disciplines and industries. This chapter explains the utility of the method for use in the health humanities and offers step-by-step instructions to teach the reader to conduct ethnographic research. Concrete examples from long-term research projects demonstrate not only how this method is used to answer “why” and “how” questions, but also how this type of research pairs with other research methods. Many tools are offered to the reader to assist in the development of ethnographic research skills including resources, references, and an exercise to teach the method.

This study aims to describe and understand the implementation of Javanese calculations in the activity of starting planting time for farmers in Temas Village, Batu District, Batu City. Researchers used a qualitative research approach that was classified as an ethnographic research method. Researchers stay at the research location during the implementation of the research by observing, seeing, participating in, and discussing with residents of the research location, especially informants. There are 7 informants in the study consisting of local residents who have Javanese Primbon, know and understand and apply Javanese calculations, willing to have open discussions with researchers. Data analysis was carried out by collecting, presenting, reducing/condensing, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the perception of the Javanese count in the effort to determine the start of planting varied. According to farmers, Javanese pitung is local wisdom that needs to be preserved. They trust their parents' advice about bad things that have been proven in the past if they don't follow the predictions in the Primbon. Farmers think that the application of Javanese calculations is a form of endeavor to Allah SWT. Even so, farmers still adhere to religious teachings and avoid actions that are contrary to Islamic law. The form of implementation of the Javanese calculation in Kelurahan Temas is not exactly the same as the provisions written in the Primbon, such as no longer providing offerings that are placed in takir. The main requirement for farmers to do Javanese calculations is to remember the day their parents died and the 1st of Suro. If the results of the Javanese calculations fall on those days, the farmer is prohibited from starting planting. The hope is to avoid bad obstacles. The references used by farmers are oyot, wit, godhong, uwoh which are adjusted to the type of plant to be planted.

Introduction: Homelessness continues to exist in our country even though we hear of various initiatives that have been put in place to solve this ongoing issue. The objectives of this study are, first, to explore factors that lead to homelessness, second, to determine the associated medical conditions and third, to shed light on the views of homeless individuals regarding their future perspectives. Methods: This study employed the use of a qualitative research method in analysing the experiences of 24 homeless individuals. It will detail the causes that have led to the respondents’ homelessness and their future plans. Results: From the research conducted, it was found that the factors that lead to homelessness are family disorganization, job loss and underemployment, not having a place to call home and attitude problems. The future plans of the 24 respondents can be divided into several broad themes – finding a job, finding their families, finding a better shelter home and seeking for knowledge, while some had no obvious plans. Most of the 24 individuals had no knowledge of their own medical conditions. Conclusions: Initiatives from people with authority or organizations dedicated to working on issues of homelessness are not enough to prevent this condition from occurring. People who are homeless must themselves be willing to change their attitudes while family members must care and be responsible for their own families. Health awareness is very important and the occurrence of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis can be prevented if more attention is given to health.

Cultural identity is a specific word that refers to individuals and communities in distinguishing themselves from others. One of the most dominant identities in a community culture is traditional clothing. In Sarawak, the traditional dress for the Iban is commonly known as Ngepan Indu. The Ngepan Indu is often worn during the Gawai Dayak celebration season as well as several other ritual ceremonies such as the Miring ceremony (Offerings) and Melah Pinang (Marriage). The Iban community believes that the Ngepan Iban is an identity and cultural icon in today's customs. Apart from that, Ngepan Iban is one of the treasures and legacies of Petara (God) who inhabited a kingdom called Panggau Libau, Tinting Gawai Gasing Gerah Layang so that Iban always remembered Petara and the origin of Iban's ancestors. This paper aims to analyze and understand the Ngepan Indu in the context of the custom and culture of the Iban community by using the qualitative research method based on the collective memory of the Iban cultural experts in Sarawak. Through this research, it is expected to have an effective and progressive impact to regenerate the spirit of Iban culture to continue persistently preserve the Ngepan Iban as a cultural heritage from the ancestors of the past, so that it will continue to be preserved for the future.
