A solid-fuel rocket engine is a complex technical system in which a number of interrelated non – stationary and substantially nonlinear physical and chemical processes simultaneously occur. The type of SFRE under consideration has its own problems and design features. To optimize the parameters of a rocket engine, we study the dynamics of its internal processes. The research method is to set up a computational experiment. We consider the conjugate statement of the problem, which includes: triggering of the ignition device; – heating, ignition and subsequent unsteady and turbulent combustion of the powder charge; – unsteady threedimensional shock wave and a vortex of homogeneous-heterogeneous flow of air and products of combustion in the combustion chamber, nozzle block and launchers unit; – depressurization of the combustion chamber and the subsequent departure of the stub nozzle block. Each of the subtasks is considered in a relationship and resolved simultaneously - at a single time step. As a result of researches it is established that when triggered, the solid-propellant in the combustion chamber is implemented by an abnormal process associated with the segregation of the combustion mode of multi-turret powder charge. The results of numerical calculations are presented, on the basis of which constructive measures are developed to eliminate this undesirable effect.

The dynamics of transient in-chamber processes (internal ballistics) of the cruise missile's second-stage cruise missile propulsion system is studied, taking into account, in the general case, distributed spatially-three-dimensional and time-varying flight overloads. The research method is the formulation of a computational experiment. Be considered coupled formulation of the problem, including: – transient triggering of igniter device (the rate of combustion of the igniting composition is described on the basis of experimental and theoretical approach afterburn combustion products in case igniting device); preheating, ignition and subsequent unsteady and turbulent combustion of solid propellant charge (used quasi-homogeneous combustion model based on the equations of heat conduction and chemical kinetics recorded for a condensed phase (solid fuel), taking into account the influence of the gas phase (torch) on the process of combustion in the condensed phase; the method of solving the problem – finite difference method); – non-stationary three-dimensional homogeneous-heterogeneous four phase flow of air and products of combustion in the combustion chamber, the nozzle block and the block launchers rocket engine (used approaches of continuum mechanics of multiphase media; the basic system of equations system of vortex differential equations of gas dynamics solution method – a multi-parameter class of difference schemes of splitting into physical processes of the method Davydova); – depressurization of the combustion chamber of the SRB (equation of motion of the plug nozzle block – Newton's second law; the proposed solution method – Euler's method). Each of the subtasks is considered in a relationship and resolved simultaneously – at one time step. To solve the formulated problem, a set of application programs has been developed using (for the main calculation module) the OpenCL multithreaded information processing standard. The performance of the software product was checked.

The everyday growing populations all over the world and the necessity of increase in consumption of fossil energies have made the human to discover new energy resources, which are clean, cheap and renewable. Wind energy is one of the renewable energy resources. Considerable wind speed has made settling of wind turbines at sea beneficial and appealing. For this purpose, choosing the appropriate plates to set up wind turbines on the surface of sea is necessary. Regarding the installation condition, by choosing suitable geometry for floating breakwaters, offshore wind turbine can be mounted on them. Suitable geometry of breakwater for multifunctional usage could be selected with analyzing and comparing pressure, force and moment produced by incoming waves. In this article, we implement boundary element method to solve governing differential equations by assuming potential flow. On the other hand, for promoting free surface in each time step, we employed Euler-Lagrangian method. Finally, to find the appropriate geometry for installing the wind turbine on the breakwater, moment and wave profile next to the right and left side of breakwater body are calculated. Among simulated geometries, breakwater with trapezoid geometry which its larger base is placed in the water has more sustainability and it is the most suitable geometry for wind turbine installation.

Low-thrust rocket engines are widely used in rocket and space technology for correcting the position of a spacecraft in orbit, for controlling motion along a trajectory, etc. Their number in the propulsion system can be from one to tens of units. Accordingly, the efficiency of their work significantly affects the perfection of the propulsion system as a whole. The object of the study was the low-thrust rocket engine combustion chamber operating according to the gas-liquid scheme. There were performed computational and parametric studies of various factor effects on the characteristics of the working process in the combustion chamber. The dependences of the coefficient of the consumable complex and parameters of the working process of the low-thrust rocket engine chamber on the influencing factors when using ethanol and kerosene as a fuel were calculated. A comparative analysis of the results of using these two components under similar conditions was carried out, which made it possible to reveal the influence of the physicochemical properties of the combustible component on the efficiency of the working process organization. The results obtained can be used in the design of low-thrust engines operating on the kerosene–oxygen and ethanol–oxygen propellants.

In carrying out an investigation into the explosion, among others, the investigative version of the use of a single-use reactive grenade launcher is being considered. The most common for criminal explosions are applied grenade launchers RPG-18, RPG-22, RPG-26. Their use is due to a number of such properties as small size and weight, which makes it possible to transfer them covertly, the range of the shot significantly exceeding the range of the hand grenade throw, the high detonating effect of the rocket grenade explosion. The single-use rocket launchers are generally of the same design. Their differences are in the features of the components construction and dimensional characteristics, which are given in the article. On the basis of expert practice, details ofgrenade launchers that remain at the site of the explosion and have the least damage are determined. These details are the objects of investigation of the explosion technical expertise. These objects include launchers of grenade launchers and rocket parts ofjet grenades. The design features of the launchers, their dimensional characteristics and marking symbols make it possible to determine their belonging to a specific type of jet grenade launchers. Missile parts of jet grenades differ in the form of the combustion chamber of the jet engine, nozzle, in the size ofthe outlet section of the nozzle, in the form and size of the stabilizerfeathers. To determine the belonging of the rocket part of the grenade to a specific type ofjet grenade launcher, it’s necessary to establish a set of structural features and dimensional characteristics. At considerable damage of the combustion chamber of the jet engine, as a rule, the nozzle block remains intact that allows to define diameter of critical section of a nozzle, and on it to establish type of the used single-use grenade launcher.

The fact that the erosion process is rein-forced in the research site. Due to lack of agrotechnical measures on the slopes erosion process has been strength-ened, soil flooded with soil, physical and chemical properties of the soil have deteriorated, nutritional elements are reduced, vegetation is reduced and destruction limit. Background: The impulse for the propulsion of a rocket engine is obtained from the combustion of propellant mixture inside the combustion chamber and as the plume exhausts through a convergent- divergent nozzle. At stoichiometric ratio, the temperature inside the combustion chamber can be as high as 3500K. Thus, effective cooling of the thrust chamber becomes an essential criterion while designing a rocket engine. Objective: A new cooling method of thrust chambers was introduced by Chiaverni, which is termed as Vortex Combustion Cold-Wall Chamber (VCCW). The patent works on cyclone separators and confined vortex flow mechanism for providing high propellant mixing with improved degree of turbulence inside the combustion chamber, providing the required notion for studies on VCCW. The flow inside a VCCW has a complex structure characterised by axial pressure losses, swirl velocities, centrifugal force, flow reversal and strong turbulence. In order to study the flow phenomenon, both the experimental and numerical investigations are carried out. Methods: In this study, non-reactive flow analysis was conducted with real propellants like gaseous oxygen and hydrogen. The test was conducted to analyse the influence of mixture ratio and injection pressure of the propellants on the chamber pressure in a vortex combustion chamber. A vortex combustor was designed in which the oxidiser injected tangentially at the aft end near the nozzle spiraled up to the top plate and formed an inner core inside the chamber. The fuel was injected radially from injectors provided near the top plate and the propellants were mixed in the inner core. This resulted in enhanced mixing and increased residence time for the fuel. More information on the flow behaviour has been obtained by numerical analysis in Fluent. The test also investigated the sensitivity of the tangential injection pressure on the chamber pressure development. Results: All the test cases showed an increase in chamber pressure with the mixture ratio and injection pressure of the propellants. The maximum chamber pressure was found to be 3.8 bar at PC1 and 2.7 bar at PC2 when oxidiser to fuel ratio was 6.87. There was a reduction in chamber pressure of 1.1 bar and 0.7 bar at PC1 and PC2, respectively, in both the cases when hydrogen was injected. A small variation in the pressure of the propellant injected tangentially made a pronounced effect on the chamber pressure and hence vortex combustion chamber was found to be very sensitive to the tangential injection pressure. Conclusion: VCCW mechanism has been to be found to be very effective for keeping the chamber surface within the permissible limit and also reducing the payload of the space vehicle.

We consider the multi-armed bandit problem with penalties for switching that include setup delays and costs, extending the former results of the author for the special case with no switching delays. A priority index for projects with setup delays that characterizes, in part, optimal policies was introduced by Asawa and Teneketzis in 1996, yet without giving a means of computing it. We present a fast two-stage index computing method, which computes the continuation index (which applies when the project has been set up) in a first stage and certain extra quantities with cubic (arithmetic-operation) complexity in the number of project states and then computes the switching index (which applies when the project is not set up), in a second stage, with quadratic complexity. The approach is based on new methodological advances on restless bandit indexation, which are introduced and deployed herein, being motivated by the limitations of previous results, exploiting the fact that the aforementioned index is the Whittle index of the project in its restless reformulation. A numerical study demonstrates substantial runtime speed-ups of the new two-stage index algorithm versus a general one-stage Whittle index algorithm. The study further gives evidence that, in a multi-project setting, the index policy is consistently nearly optimal.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the load characteristics of steel and concrete tubular members under jet fire, with the motivation to investigate the jet fire load characteristics in FPSO topsides. This paper is part of Phase II of the joint industry project on explosion and fire engineering of FPSOs (EFEF JIP) [1]. To obtain reliable load values, jet fire tests were carried out in parallel with a numerical study. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was used to set up an adiabatic wall boundary condition for the jet fire to model the heat transfer mechanism. A concrete tubular member was tested under the assumption that there is no conduction effect from jet fire. A steel tubular member was tested and considered to transfer heat through conduction, convection, and radiation. The temperature distribution, or heat load, was analyzed at specific locations on each type of member. ANSYS CFX [2] and Kameleon FireEx [3] codes were used to obtain similar fire action in the numerical and experimental methods. The results of this study will provide a useful database to determine design values related to jet fire.

A numerical model on methane/air combustion inside a small Swiss-roll combustor was set up to investigate the flame position of small-scale combustion. The simulation results show that the combustion flame could be maintained in the central area of the combustor only when the speed and equivalence ratio are all within a narrow and specific range. For high inlet velocity, the combustion could be sustained stably even with a very lean fuel and the flame always stayed at the first corner of reactant channel because of the strong convection heat transfer and preheating. For low inlet velocity, small amounts of fuel could combust stably in the central area of the combustor, because heat was appropriately transferred from the gas to the inlet mixture. Whereas, for the low premixed gas flow, only in certain conditions (Φ = 0.8 ~ 1.2 when ν0 = 1.0m/s, Φ = 1.0 when ν0 = 0.5m/s) the small-scale combustion could be maintained.

Based on relative theories of gas dynamics and computational fluid dynamics, the flow field computation software ANSYS Fluent was used to simulate the steady flow field of the solid type ignition device of liquid-propellant rocket engine in two working conditions (condition I: without ignition channel, condition II: with ignition channel). On this basis, the influence of ignition channel on the working characteristics of the solid type ignition device of the liquid-propellant rocket engine was analyzed and experimentally tested. The results showed that when the pressure in the combustion chamber was atmospheric pressure, under condition II, the gas velocity at the throat of the ignition device did not reach the sonic velocity, and the position of sonic velocity moved to the downstream section of the ignition channel. Compared to condition I, the gas velocity and energy at the ignition outlet increased, which would be beneficial for initial ignition, and the gas pressure and temperature at the throat increased as well, indicating that the structural strength at the throat should be evaluated. The gas flow, gas pressure, and gas temperature at the ignition outlet decreased compared to working condition I, yet the changes were small and would have minimal effect on the ignition performance. During the pressure increase process in the combustion chamber, the gas pressure, velocity, temperature, flow, and energy at the ignition outlet experienced a steady stage in both working conditions before coming to an inflection point. The inflection point under condition II is smaller than that under condition I. To improve the ignition reliability, the working pressure of the ignition device should be further increased.
