The period between the Glorious Revolution and the end of Queen Anne’s reign was a time of fierce antagonism between the political parties. This rivalry defined the political situation in early eighteenth century Britain and laid the foundation for the development of the ministerial machine of propaganda aimed at discrediting opponents and justifying the policies of the government. Methodically developed, the system was well applied during Oxford’s Ministry (1710-14). The establishment of a ministerial newspaper –The Examiner –played a significant role in solidifying public opinion behind the transfer of power to the Tories. Remaining a ‘right-wing’ organ, it became a sharp edge of anti-whig propaganda. The main objective of this article is to analyse the rhetoric of passions, one of the literary tools used inThe Examinerto build up a negative image of Whigs. This image, created on the pages ofThe Examiner, represents an element of a wider vision depicting passionate Whigs and reasonable Tories.

Since Covid-19 broke out in Indonesia, the public has monitored various government policies in dealing with these health disasters. However, policies run slowly; it gives rise to diverse public opinion. These multiple opinions become a form of communication between the government and society. However, the government does not fully capture people’s views, so people feel they do not receive government policies’ feedback. The purpose of this research is to find out how the Indonesian government’s public communication is in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. The research used a descriptive qualitative method using data during Covid-19. This study explains how the debate of government and community communication occurs in the form of public opinion. Various forms of public opinion from adverse to positive states become message instruments aimed at the government. This instrument then forms communication in the form of action as a sense of moral panic due to the absence of a back answer to the opinion expressed. So, these opinions are only as answers and realized by society in phenomena.

This study discusses how online media Okezone.com and Viva.co.id frame the news of the Moving of the Indonesian Capital. The research approach used is descriptive qualitative using framing theory. The method used is the Zhongdan Pan and Gerald M. Kosick Model. The model analyzes with four structures namely Syntax (title, lead, background information, source and closing quotes) Scripts (completeness of 5W + 1H news items), Thematic (paragraph propositions between sentences) and Rhetorical (words, idioms, pictures/photographs). This study uses document study data collection techniques originating from uploads of both online media in July-September 2019 related to the Moving of the Indonesian Capital so that six news were collected that were examined as a data analysis unit in this study. The findings obtained from the syntactic structure of the two media use the opposite title, whereby the background information used by Okezone.com is more to the government while Viva.co.id is more to the public. In the structure of the script Okezone.com fulfills the news element, but the resource persons chosen are only one point of view, while Viva.co.id has not fulfilled the news element in the third news. In the thematic structure the two media differ in highlighting their contents even with the same theme. For the rhetorical element, the use of images in both media is sufficient to explain the contents of the news. It is hoped that further research can emphasize media ideology in framing an event. In addition, the media can also display more than one resource so that it can be seen from various points of view. The community itself is expected to dig deeper information by not only from one media.

We analyze whether the Islamist terror attack on the Christmas market in Berlin in 2016 had an impact on public opinion toward immigration in general and, since the attacker has entered Germany to apply for asylum, toward refugees in particular. An analysis of this natural experiment reveals a negative shift regarding the latter, while no differences are observed for the former. To shed more light on the driver of attitude change, we combine these findings with a quantitative content analysis of online media reporting about refugees before and after the attack. Mass media have long been considered to have an impact on exclusionary attitudes toward ethnic minorities. However, empirical evidence on this relationship remains largely anecdotal. We draw upon unsupervised machine learning to quantify the developments in reporting in three popular German online news websites. Results reveal that the attack had significant impact on media reporting on these websites. However, the strong focus on the attack was only short lived, quickly decreasing already in the second week after the attack. Linking media data to the public opinion data reveals no clear connection between reporting and attitudes. In contrast to theoretical expectations, descriptive evidence even shows that both follow almost opposite trends, since people changed their attitudes only weeks after the attack. We discuss potential explanations of these, at first sight, counterintuitive findings.

The mass demonstration of Aksi Reuni 212 attracted large amount of controversy among Indonesian people due news framing of media which signify some aspects and suppress other aspects of the event thus effectively making the coverage subjective. This article aims at understanding the construction of news framing on the subject of Aksi Reuni 212, especially regarding the process of securing permission to perform the mass demonstration, by online news portals Detik.com and Liputan6.com. It also aims at revealing the differences between the two news portals regarding their news framing construction. Model of framing analysis by William A. Gamson and Andre Modigliani is applied to analyze data in interpretative and qualitative manner. Findings reveal that news coverages from Detik.com were more inclined to the preparedness of the government to deal with risks pertaining to national security posed by the event. Liputan6.com, on the other hands, framed the event of Aksi Reuni 212 as a regular, instead of extraordinary, demonstration event that does not need special attention regarding security threats it might brought. Despite differences in terms of how they framed the event, both news portals framed the event positively. Keywords: Aksi Reuni 212, image, and online media.

Indonesia is a developing country and supports the program of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which consist of 17 goals. SDGs is not only the government’s duty, but a shared duty from any elements. Online media has a crucial role in implementing goals of Indonesia’s SDG. Information published in online news related to the SDGs is an important consideration for the government, society, and all elements. Categorizing news manually to find out news topics is very time-consuming and done by the ability of news editors. News presented by online media on the news site can be used as topic modeling, where hidden topics can be found in the news on online media. Topic modeling will classify data based on a particular topic and determine the relationship between text. Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) is one of the methods on topic modeling to find out the trend of topics of SDGs news. Based on the result of this research, the implementation of LDA is the right choice for finding topics in a document. The result of topic modeling with k = 17 obtained the highest coherence score of 0.5405 on topic 8. Topic 8 discussed news related to the eighth SDGs goals, namely decent work and economic growth. This categorization was based on words formed after the LDA process. Then, topic 5 discussed the news on the 17th SDGs goals, namely partnerships for the goals. Topic 6 discussed the news of the first SDGs, namely no poverty.

Although in many parts of Bangladesh, a South Asian developing country, where English enjoys the status of a foreign language, the use of multimedia in teaching and learning is viewed as a matter of luxury. However, nowadays the usefulness and the necessity of it are well recognized by the academics as well as the government. The study aims to focus on the difference between a traditional classroom void of multimedia and multimedia equipped classrooms at university level by explaining how multimedia support the students with enhanced opportunity to interact with diverse texts that give them more in-depth comprehension of the subject.
