This article represents a conceptual work that critiques and challenges traditional linear theoretical assumptions of academic socialization and integration that are often applied to research of diverse populations in academia in general and doctoral education specifically. The article further proposes a new conceptual framework of academic socialization as a meaning-making act of historically underrepresented doctoral students. The ultimate goal of the proposed framework is to reconcile the restrictive use of sociological macro- and micro- orientations to foreground possibilities of a conceptual and empirical focus on an individual meaning making act (as a form of individual agency) of historically underrepresented doctoral students within the critical contexts of academia. The proposed framework offers methodological and analytical tools for a more complex qualitative research and institutional/individual practice to account for increasingly diverse populations in higher education.

This paper describes the reflections of two social work PhD students based on their personal and professional experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic. The students describe their positionality and use that to expound on the impact of the pandemic on their lives. They reflect on the disruptions to their social work education and research priorities including transitioning to online learning and modifications to research agendas. They then discuss ongoing distractions such as worries about getting sick, mental health concerns, and financial constraints. They share their discoveries about glaring disparities in coronavirus infection and death rates, the need to adjust research agendas in response to current events, and the urgency for qualitative research strategies to add meaning to the numbers being reported. In addition, the authors describe shared experiences and intersections they discovered while writing this essay. Finally, recommendations for practice include recommitting to social work values to help surmount the ongoing waves of this pandemic; reimagining social work education so that disparities and injustice intersect with every subject taught and graduates become experts at leading social change; and harnessing the untapped potential of qualitative research to drive real, systemic change.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to argue that rather than contest the artificial schism produced by social scientists between “qualitative” and “quantitative” research, we should to accept this binary, however, contingently, and use it productively. This would be an act of “strategic essentialism” that would allow us to be productive in the research and inquiry. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses postcolonial theory to make a case for contingent representation, i.e. using artificial categories to carve out a space for heterodox theoretical approaches. Findings Researchers devoted to qualitative research must resist thinking, speaking and evaluating that research using quantitative thinking. Also, while ethical considerations are paramount in qualitative research, we need to debunk the narrow understanding of ethics as “following rules.” Also, qualitative researchers need to be aware of the institutional pulls that the research will be subject to, and also be ready to resist them. Originality/value This paper discusses how good research resists the siren call of institutionalization. It challenges the “common sense” assumptions of the field and brings them into the realm of the questionable. It seeks to theorize the untheorizable, and anthropologize the dominant.

This aims to portray the organization of Persatuan Islam as a speech community. This research uses constructivist paradigm, because that will be explored is the understanding that helps the process of interpretation called the Persatuan Islam as a community specch. This study uses a qualitative research type, because that will be studied, is a central fact. Furthermore, this research using ethnography method of communication. Aside from being a research method, ethnographic communication also has the theoretical assumptions, components and tasks of communication in a speech society (Community Speech). The results of the study show that Islamic Unity communications on a common pattern, except in the cognitive aspect show the dominance of religious understanding. The use of Islamic congregation language of many pesantren. Furthermore in the interaction lesson, the congregation of Islamic unity shows a collective cohesiveness. Penelirian ini bertujuan untuk memotret organisasi Persatuan Islam sebagai komunitas tutur. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma konstruktivis, karena yang akan digali berupa pemahaman yang membantu proses interpretasi yang berkaitan dengan Persatuan Islam sebagai specch community. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif, sebab yang akan dikaji, merupakan gejala sentral. Selanjutnya penelitian ini menggunakan metode etnografi komunikasi. Selain sebagai metode penelitian, etnografi komunikasi juga memiliki asumsi-asumsi teoritik berupa aktivitas, komponen dan kompetensi komunkasi pada sebuah masyarakat tutur (Speech Community). Hasil penelitian menunjukan komunikasi Persatuan Islam mengacu pada pattern umum, kecuali dalam skema kognitif menunjukan dominasi pemahaman keagamaan. Dalam penggunaan varietas bahasa jamaah Persatuan Islam banyak dipengaruhi budaya pesantren. Selanjutnya dalam kompetensi interaksi, jamaah persatuan Islam menunjukan kohesifitas kolektif.

This article indicated a model for a scientific description of styles of political leadership in Serbia from 1990 to the present, more precisely, pointed the basic elements of concept developed by the author in the study ?The style of political leaders in Serbia in the period 1990-2006? (2010). For the evaluation the author uses analytical tools that include the aforementioned concept, simultaneously indicating correlative theoretical approaches the aforementioned study did not examine, and may be of importance for the research of political elites in Serbia. This contributes the epistemological part of the method, which is registered in the definition of the style of political leadership as a term and the category apparatus that follows - understood from the aspect of the political style: the style in building political power, the style of political communication, the style of building one?s legitimacy, the ideological style, the styles of political language, symbolism and rituals, non-verbal communication and style in expressing patriotism. Starting from the fact that political styles are related to characteristics of political cultures and that it is necessary to make a concept of ideal typical models of styles focused on political subjects, this article marked the styles of political leadership typology related to the specific acting of political leaders in Serbia: authoritarian, republican, realistic, populist, conformist, revolutionary and style of a politician-rebel.

ABSTRAK Bagaimana Anak Mengkode-ulang Narasi Visual dalam The Wolves in the Walls karya Gaiman dan McKean. Buku cerita bergambar sebagai teks untuk anak-anak merupakan kombinasi unik dari kata-kata dan gambar. Dua elemen yang saling terkait sama lain menciptakan inter-animasi bersama dalam membangun makna. Para ahli telah lama mempercayai bahwa proses membaca buku cerita bergambar melibatkan proses yang rumit dalam lingkaran hermeneutik. Namun, karena buku cerita bergambar terutama ditujukan untuk anak-anak, maka proses tersebut terjadi dalam pikiran sadar mereka. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan proses pembuatan makna anak dalam narasi visual buku cerita bergambar yang mana dalam penelitian ini menggunakan karya Gaiman, The Wolves in the Walls. Setelah melalui serangkaian penelitian kualitatif dengan lima anak di Inggris, aspek yang diteliti dalam penelitian ini adalah gaya bercerita, penggambaran pengalaman, dan tempat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak membaca buku cerita bergambar dengan cara yang berbeda dari orang dewasa, terutama dalam strategi yang digunakan untuk membaca teks yang panjang dan rumit. Kata kunci: cerita bergambar, gaya bercerita, penggambaran pengalaman, tempat, lingkaran hermeneutik  ABSTRACT Picturebook as a text for children is a unique combination of words and images. Those two elements are interrelated into one another, creating a mutual interanimation in constructing the meaning. Experts have long believed that the process of reading picturebook involves a complicated process of hermeneutic circle. However, since picturebook is mainly aimed for children, the process happens subconsciously within their mind. Therefore, this research aims to reveal children’s meaning making process in visual narrative of picturebook, in this research is Gaiman’s The Wolves in the Walls. After a series of qualitative research with fi ve children in UK, the aspects to research are style, projection of experience, and setting. The result shows that children read the picturebook in a different way than adult, alongside their strategy to cope with long and complicated text. The aim of this study is to reveal the experiences of graduate students in the field of Turkish education during the pandemic process. Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The sample of the research consists of graduate and doctoral students studying at different universities. Easily accessible case sampling was used to determine the study group. The data of the study were collected with the interview guide prepared by the researchers and given the final shape after the expert opinion was taken. The study group was reached by using internet tools (Zoom) and data were collected. The content analysis of data was made. As a result of the research, it was seen that during the pandemic process graduate students experienced advantages such as increased technological opportunities, accessing to online materials easily, time saving and efficient studying opportunities. However, disadvantages such as inefficient lessons, lack of interaction, inability to focus on lessons, data collection problems, and inability to benefit from libraries were also revealed as problems experienced by graduate students. Students expect technological opportunities to continue, but to ensure normalization in some issues that cannot be resolved with these opportunities. They think that face-to-face education is more qualified, communication is better, and research can be done more effectively.

Chapter 1 explores the key theoretical and empirical literature that guides the research project. It describes the pushes and pulls that women experience in relationships characterized by IPV/A and it outlines what we understand women need in the short term and long term after the dissolution of a violent relationship. This chapter also incorporates a discussion of central thematic concepts such as growth, healing from trauma, individual agency and collective efficacy, identity, and meaning making. I challenge the false, or incomplete, assumption that there is some kind of closure for women after leaving a violent relationship. Finally, it looks at what it means to be “resilient.”

Corrections is a multi-layered business containing all aspects of life for the employees, clients/inmates, and the general public. Therefore, the findings of the study are transferable to many types of administrators. The chapter uses a case study approach and qualitative research methods. The study findings focuses on corrections administrative leadership mindset, philosophical approaches, and practice policies.. The conceptual and theoretical approaches included effective corrections administrators are promoting the growth of social capital (e.g., social skills and relationships), human capital (employable skills), and cultural capital (e.g., community and public safety). Four state prison wardens/administrators participated in this study. Data was collected via Creswell's in-depth portrait of cases: three-part series of semi-structured interviews. Four themes emerged during data analysis. This chapter focuses on the fourth theme and the conceptual framework.

The future of social work research relies on the intellect and competence of current doctoral students. These future scholars who receive doctoral education that values qualitative inquiry will create a system where qualitative research traditions receive the same privilege as quantitative research traditions. Project-based learning provides learning opportunities that can challenge assumptions about what academia considers “real” research. This descriptive qualitative study explored key attributes of using project-based learning within two consecutive social work doctoral courses to encourage qualitative research skill development. Students and instructors participated in ideawriting and focus groups to assess the usefulness of PBL within these courses. The findings suggested that PBL may be useful for deepening knowledge about qualitative inquiry and reducing epistemological unconsciousness.

RECENT EFFORTS TO RENOVATE the teaching of young children have led to a greater emphasis on teachers' theoretical understandings of children and teaching, and how they translate their understandings into practice. This qualitative research analysed and discussed how early childhood pre-service teachers in one Australian university perceived their theoretical competence and how they used this in their pedagogical decision making and adaptations in their professional placement. The paper investigated how the pre-service teachers justified and enacted decisions about which pedagogical and theoretical approaches to use in their classrooms, and how they reconciled potential conflicts and contradictions between their own ideas, pedagogical and theoretical knowledge, and those of their mentor teachers. A framework analysis of rich qualitative data obtained through focus groups in class illuminated the pre-service teachers' theoretical competency, theoretical confidence, theoretical preparation and theoretical reflexivity. The paper concludes with recommendations for improving early childhood pre-service teachers' professional practice.
