Objective: to develop technologies for preoperative preparation of the posterior lamellar corneal graft based on our own formulation of the preservation medium for optimal dehydration of the donor cornea and a technique for cutting out an ultrathin flap using an optimized method at the Eye Tissue Bank. Materials methods. In a series of experimental studies, we obtained data on the hydration level of cadaveric donor corneas that were preserved in various solutions at different observation periods. Using 16 corneas, analytical weighing and pachymetry were performed via optical coherence tomography in the experimental (n = 8) and control (n = 8) groups. Morphological and functional characteristics of the corneal endothelium were then assessed. At the next stage of work, ultrathin grafts were formed from 16 corneas after hypothermic preservation in the experimental (n = 8) and control (n = 8) solutions by single-pass microkeratome, followed by microscopy of the samples using a scanning electron microscope. Results. After the first days of preservation in the proposed solution, there was dehydration of 9% cornea in the experimental group in comparison with the samples of the control group. After 4 days of preservation, there was no reliable difference found between the groups (p > 0.05) in the study of the endothelial cell viability of ultra-thin corneal grafts by immunofluorescent microscopy using the «Live and dead» marker. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that corneal stromal collagen fibers, preserved in the proposed medium, retained their integrity. Conclusion. The proposed technology can be recommended for use at eye banks for formation of an ultra-thin corneal graft at the preoperative stage.

AbstractEpidemiological and experimental studies have shown that natural products are beneficial for the protection against cancer. Maple syrup is a natural sweetener often consumed throughout the world. Maple syrup contains various phenolic compounds such as lignans, coumarin and Ginnalin A (GA). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of GA shown to have cytotoxic and apoptotic effects in several human carcinoma cell lines. The effect of GA on cell viability was determined by a XTT (2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide) assay as described in the manufacturer’s instruction. Total RNA was isolated from cancer cells using TRIzol Reagent and reverse transcription was performed using Script™ cDNA Synthesis Kit (Bio-Rad) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Expressions of important genes in apoptosis including MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, TIMP-2, CDH1 and CDH2, were investigated in dose and control groups by qPCR (quantitative real time- polymerase chain reaction).When compared with the control group, qPCR results illustrated that a significant increase in gene expression was observed in the expressions of CDH1, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 by 3.52, 5.13 and 2.67 times respectively. Research has shown that Ginnalin A can demonstrate an anti-metastatic effect by regulating the expression of important genes in metastasis on cancer cell lines. Furthermore, in this study the activation of caspase-8 in apoptotic signaling pathways and the pro-apoptotic caspases required for extrinsic apoptotic signal transduction was defined.

Abstract Background Among the practices of complementary medicine used to treat several diseases is the Spiritist “passe (SP).” Experimental studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of this energy therapies in reducing anxiety in adults. However, studies evaluating the effects of the “passe” energy therapy on health outcomes in newborns (NBs) are lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of SP on stress hormone levels, pain, physiological parameters and length of stay in NBs. Methods NBs were randomly allocated into two groups: intervention (3 days SP sessions, n=13) and control (3 days sham sessions, n=12). Results In the SP group, respiratory frequency (RF) was found significantly lower (p<0.05), and reduction of heart rate and length of stay were observed, without statistical differences. While in the control, there was higher tendency of cortisol levels (p=0.05). Conclusions In this pilot study, RF reduced and prevented the elevation of the salivary cortisol concentration in preterm NBs receiving the SP compared with the control group.

This Study Was Typed of Experimental Studies with pre- test and Post-Test with Control Group. The Study Consisted of All woman Referred to the Counselling Centres in university Neyshabur City. A Sample of 36 People Was Selected Then Randomly Assigned to Two Experimental Groups and One Control Groups. The people inventory sexual intimacy Botlani (SII) Was Used for Data Collection Then Based on 12 Meetings 90 Minutes for the Experiment Groups. The Pre-Test and Post-Test Scores Were Analysed Using a Manova Test in the SPSS 20 Software. According to the Results of Showed feminist Therapy More Effect Than Other Experimental Group and Control Group (p≤0.001) so sex Therapy More Effect Than Control Group in Variable (p≤0.001). The conclusion is that the feminist therapy approach can be used to increase sexual intimacy in developing Muslim societies.

In homologous transplantation or allotranplantation of limbs, the great tissue diversity causes variability in the rejection process and, consequently, its immunology is very complex. Thus, limb transplantation is the most used prototype of compound tissue transplantation among the protocols of experimental studies. Composite tissue allotransplantation represents the experimental model to study the homologous transplantation (from an individual to another) of vascularized, innervated musclecutaneous units, joints, bone or even the whole member. Groups of rats were undergone allogeneic hindlimb transplantation. The receptors were randomized and control groups were established as: Control Group A: Autograft controls (F344 rats had its limbs reimplanted) and no immunosuppressive therapy. Control Group B: Allograft controls (BN rats limbs were transplanted to F344). Composite tissue homotransplantation allows the inclusion of innervated muscle-cutaneous units, joint and bone or even the hole limb, is considerably applicable in cases of congenital absence or deformity, trauma or greater resection due to malignant tumor. For many complex deformities, these transplantations would allow a more precise reconstruction than the current reconstruction techniques.

Background: The use of electronic interventions to improve reading is becoming a common resource. This systematic review aims to describe the main characteristics of randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental studies that have used these tools to improve first-language reading, in order to highlight the features of the most reliable studies and guide future research.Methods: The whole procedure followed the PRISMA guidelines, and the protocol was registered before starting the process (doi: 10.17605/OSF.IO/CKM4N). Searches in Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science and an institutional reference aggregator (Unika) yielded 6,230 candidate articles. After duplicate removal, screening, and compliance of eligibility criteria, 55 studies were finally included.Results: They were research studies on improving first-language reading, both in children and adults, and including a control group. Thirty-three different electronic tools were employed, most of them in English, and studies were very diverse in sample size, length of intervention, and control tasks. Risk of bias was analyzed with the PEDro scale, and all studies had a medium or low risk. However, risk of bias due to conflicts of interest could not be evaluated in most studies, since they did not include a statement on this issue.Conclusion: Future research on this topic should include randomized intervention and control groups, with sample sizes over 65 per group, interventions longer than 15 h, and a proper disclosure of possible conflicts of interest.Systematic Review Registration: The whole procedure followed the PRISMA guidelines, and the protocol was registered before starting the process in the Open Science Framework (doi: 10.17605/OSF.IO/CKM4N).

Depression is a nosological entity which may appear alone or concomitantly (e.g. in schizophrenia). Analysis of data from both clinical and experimental studies allows a conclusion that atypical antipsychotics, such as aripiprazole (ARI), may also be effective in treating depression in addition to antidepressants. The aim of the studies was to determine antidepressant efficacy of ARI, venlafaxine (VEN) and combined therapy using both drugs, in prenatally stressed rats (animal depression model) and control group. In addition, this article was aimed at determining the effect of these drugs on locomotor activity of these animals. The effect of chronic stress used in pregnant rats and the use of drugs such as ARI (1.5 mg/kg) and VEN (20 mg/kg) were studied in forced swimming test (FST; antidepressant effect) and locomotor activity test. Performed tests confirmed the antidepressant effect of ARI, VEN and efficacy of combined drugs in FST in both prenatally stressed rats (effect present upon single administration and after 7, 14 and 21 days of testing) and control group rats (effect present upon single administration and 7 days of testing). Moreover, upon single administration of the used drugs to prenatally stressed rats, it was found sedative effect – reduced animals’ locomotor activity. Study results have proven antidepressant and sedative efficacy of ARI, VEN and combined administration of these drugs. Due to the small amount of data on the above preparations, in particular in the context of animal depression models, further studies in this respect are recommended.

Several clinical reports have shown changes in plasma Se concentration with corticosteroid treatments, but the results have been inconsistent. Few experimental studies have been done on this subject. In the present study the effect of dexamethasone (DEX) treatment on Se concentrations and activities of Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase (EC1.11.1.9; SeGPx) were examined in adult male ICR mice. In the first experiment, DEX was given via drinking water containing 5 or 50 mg DEX/I. At 1 or 3 weeks of DEX treatment, mice were dissected and the Se concentrations as well as SeGPx activities in various tissues, including plasma, were determined. At 1 week the DEX-treated groups had significantly lower hepatic Se concentrations and significantly higher plasma and cerebral concentrations than the control group. The DEX-treated groups showed lower SeGPx activities in the hepatic cytosol and higher SeGPx activities in the plasma than the saline (9 g NaCl/l)-treated group, in parallel with the changes in Se concentrations. At 3 weeks, neither hepatic nor plasma Se concentrations showed a significant change. In the second experiment, mice were injected subcutaneously with DEX and, thereafter, mice were food-deprived. The DEX-injected groups had higher plasma Se concentrations. A similar finding was obtained also when the DEX- or saline-injected mice were not food-deprived. Thus, the difference between the DEX-treated and control groups was possibly caused by redistribution of tissue Se. These results suggested that the effects of DEX on Se concentrations were tissue dependent and that the higher plasma Se observed in DEX-treated groups might be explained by the release of tissue Se into plasma as plasma SeGPx.

Background: Several studies showed that fluoride interferes in the dynamics involved in the development of caries and could present an antimicrobial effect or provide demineralization inhibition or dental remineralization. The development of fluoride-releasing materials can contribute to a preventive of demineralization. GIC and Compomer are restorative materials containing fluoride which can prevent demineralization. Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of Compomer and GIC against prevention in enamel demineralization. Method: The cavities were made on 18 bovine teeth which grouped into 3 groups, each group consisting of 6 bovine teeth. After the restorative procedures, the teeth were submitted to demineralization and remineralization cycling during 14 days. The sections of the teeth were examined under scanning electron microscope after undergoing pH cycling. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey Test (p<0.05). Results: GIC group showed the lowest lesion depth of demineralization (10.9883 ± 0.74333) followed by Compomer group (25.4183 ± 3.44268) and Control group (88.9783 ± 3.02495). Conclusion: GIC restorative materials have a better enamel demineralization prevention effect than Compomer. Keywords: compomer, demineralization, fluoride, GIC, remineralization

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a collective term for the positional and geometric isomers of a conjugated diene of linoleic acid (C18:2, n-6). The aims of the present study were to evaluate whether levels of hepatic α-tocopherol, α-tocopherol transfer protein (α-TTP), and antioxidant enzymes in mice were affected by a CLA-supplemented diet. C57BL/6 J mice were divided into the CLA and control groups, which were fed, respectively, a 5 % fat diet with or without 1 g/100 g of CLA (1:1 mixture of cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, cis-12) for four weeks. α-Tocopherol levels in plasma and liver were significantly higher in the CLA group than in the control group. Liver α-TTP levels were also significantly increased in the CLA group, the α-TTP/β-actin ratio being 2.5-fold higher than that in control mice (p<0.01). Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances were significantly decreased in the CLA group (p<0.01). There were no significant differences between the two groups in levels of three antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase). The accumulation of liver α-tocopherol seen with the CLA diet can be attributed to the antioxidant potential of CLA and the ability of α-TTP induction. The lack of changes in antioxidant enzyme protein levels and the reduced lipid peroxidation in the liver of CLA mice are due to α-tocopherol accumulation.
