ABSTRACT Objectives: To capture and analyze the structure of homeless people’s social representations about self-care. Methods: Research based on the theory of social representations, with 122 people in street situation. A semistructured questionnaire and free evocation technique were applied with the inducing words “caring for myself is”. The evocations were processed by the software Evoc and Iramuteq, allowing to identify central and peripheral elements and the connection between them. Results: For the group studied, “feeding oneself, personal hygiene, protecting oneself and visiting the doctor” are actions and attitudes that represent caring for themselves. In the streets, “feeding oneself” is an essential action for living/surviving that underpins the others. Final considerations: Despite behaviors based on the biomedical model, self-care was represented by extended actions to meet basic human needs. This study offers elements of reflection to rethink care practices developed by health professionals.

Introduction: Virginia Henderson considered that every person is unique with all her biological, psychological and social characteristics, and therefore defines 14 basic human needs, that each person has to satisfy. She also advised that a nurse should help helpless people who do not have the strength, desire, or knowledge to satisfy one or more of the basic human needs. Neurosurgical patients with the most severe quantitative disorder of consciousness certainly represent a particularly vulnerable group of patients, who have deficits in all domains of basic life needs. Goal: The aim of this study was to determine the attitudes of nurses about the strenous of health care procedures in comatose neurosurgical patients. Material and methods: The research was conducted at the Clinic for Neurosurgery, Clinical Center of Vojvodina as a descriptive cross-sectional study, by surveying 30 nurses. A modified questionnaire, by Marianne Neuberg, was used to assess the degree of complexity of conducting 19 health activities in patients with impaired consciousness concerning meeting their basic human needs, used is as a research instrument. Results: The results show that the nursing procedures of maintaining personal hygiene, movement and positioning of patients are considered by about 90% of nurses to be very demanding. Similar results were obtained for nursing procedures in the domains of communication, religious and religious needs. Only 4% of nurses believe that providing informational and psychological support and support to the family is not a required health care procedure. Conclusion: The nurses' attitudes indicated that the most demanding procedures for them are the provision of mental and physical care, such as transfers and positioning of patients whose extremities are in spasm. A particular challenge for nurses is health care procedures aimed at providing support to family members.

Because mental health professionals are susceptible to impairment and burnout that may negatively affect clinical work, it is ethically imperative that they engage in self-care. Previous research has found direct effects of self-care on self-awareness and well-being (e.g., Coster & Schwebel, 1997). Likewise, mindfulness has been found to positively affect well-being (Brown & Ryan, 2003). However, no studies currently available demonstrate a link between self-awareness and well-being. Mindfulness may be the link needed to support this association. A survey of mental health professionals (N = 148) revealed that mindfulness is a significant mediator between self-care and well-being. Consequently, mental health professionals are encouraged to explore their involvement in and beliefs about self-care practices.

Abstract Background Self-care interventions are influencing people’s access to, expectation and understanding of healthcare beyond formal health delivery systems. In doing so, self-care interventions could potentially improve health-seeking behaviours. While many men proactively engage in maintaining and promoting their health, the focus on men’s health comes from the recognition, at least partially, that male socialization and social norms can induce men and boys to have a lower engagement in institutionalized public health entities and systems around their sexual and reproductive health and rights, that could impact negatively on themselves, their partners and children. Main text A research agenda could consider the ways that public health messaging and information on self care practices for sexual and reproductive health and rights could be tailored to reflect men’s lived realities and experiences. Three examples of evidence-based self-care interventions related to sexual and reproductive health and rights that men can, and many do, engage in are briefly discussed: condom use, HIV self-testing and use of telemedicine and digital platforms for sexual health. We apply four core elements that contribute to health, including men’s health (people-centred approaches, quality health systems, a safe and supportive enabling environment, and behaviour-change communication) to each intervention where further research can inform normative guidance. Conclusion Engaging men and boys and facilitating their participation in self care can be an important policy intervention to advance global sexual and reproductive health and rights goals. The longstanding model of men neglecting or even sabotaging their wellbeing needs to be replaced by healthier lifestyles, which requires understanding how factors related to social support, social norms, power, academic performance or employability conditions, among others, influence men’s engagement with health services and with their own self care practices.
