This study aimed to investigate the conception of women with physical disability regarding the support network for the exercising of motherhood. It is descriptive-exploratory research, with qualitative approach, whose data were collected through semistructured interviews with 12 women with physical disability, undertaken between April and June 2014. The technique of thematic analysis was used for the treatment of the information, and Symbolic Interactionism was used as the theoretical framework. The interviewees reported the importance of the support of the partner, of family members, and of health professionals, during pregnancy and the postpartum, for them to be able to exercise the maternal role. The absence of this support influenced their conceptions regarding their capacity in this function. One can observe the need to promote the reproductive health of the person with a disability, so as to mitigate the stigmas and thus provide them with appropriate support. In addition to this, the health professionals must be trained to understand holistically their needs and rights.

Abstract Ultimately, there has been an increase in the number of cases of newborns affected by microcephaly, knowledge of the caregiver's perceptions regarding the child with microcephaly may promote the construction of therapeutic plans by health professionals that meet the expressed current needs of the child and caregivers. Thus, the aim of the present study is to describe the perception of family caregivers about microcephaly, using Callista Roy's adaptation theory. The research is descriptive, exploratory and with qualitative approach and was conducted at a School Clinic, located in the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte. The research participants were family caregivers of children diagnosed with microcephaly. Minayo's thematic analysis was used, supported by Roy's adaptation theory. Through data analysis two categories emerged: Knowledge and perception of family caregivers about microcephaly and family as support to cope with difficulties. It was observed that mothers, faced with the condition of their son with microcephaly, tend to develop a certain level of adaptation to make the situation less traumatic, making use of available social, medical care and family devices. Therefore, it is emphasized that health professionals need to act effectively in care, facilitating and strengthening effective adaptive responses. Keywords: Microcephaly, child, family caregiver, Nursing Theories. In view of the negative impact of pain on the quality of life of cancer patients, identifying and stimulating the use of effective strategies to minimize these painful feelings is highly relevant for care. The aim of this study was to identify painful experiences of adolescents with cancer and to get to know their strategies for pain relief. This is an exploratory research, using qualitative data analysis. Semistructured interviews were held with nine adolescents with cancer, who reported on acute, recurring and chronic, physical and emotional painful experiences. To relieve these pains, they described pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies, including: distraction, presence of relatives, bed positioning, cooperation to accomplish procedures and keeping up positive thinking. Therefore, it is essential for health professionals to know available evidence for pain relief and to develop skills to articulate this knowledge with their professional experience and with the patients' own strategies.

This study sought to gain insight into the attitudes, beliefs, and values that shape bondage/discipline/sadomasochism (BDSM) activities and to explore the degree and consequences of unintended or non-negotiated harms, including physical, emotional, and sexual violence. A qualitative approach, consisting of 22 semistructured interviews and over 150 hours of observations of BDSM events and activities, was used to develop an in-depth exploration of the lived experiences of participants. Thematic analysis was employed to elucidate the ways in which participants define and in some cases experience harm. Findings suggest that individuals construct rational identities that emphasize safe practices and managing harm; however; there are instances where “boundary slippage” occurs. Implications for understanding the dynamics as well as the potential dangers of “consensual” violence are discussed.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify and analyze the elements present in non-suicidal self-injury experiences by adolescents who self-injured. Method: a qualitative research, with data collection conducted from August to October 2019 through individual therapeutic consultations, mediated by the dialogical resource Drawing-Story with Theme Procedure. Participants were eight adolescents who reported self-injury in a school of a municipality in the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil. Thematic analysis was developed from data anchored in Winnicott’s psychoanalytic theory. Results: two thematic categories were identified: “I think nobody cares about me” and “I do not see the colors I used to see before”. The elements present in adolescents’ experiences on non-suicidal self-injury highlighted the importance of a physical and relational environment that offers holding and is able to integrate characteristics of the adolescence process itself. The importance of a family and peer support network, as well as the need for family, school and health professionals to be involved in coping with and preventing non-suicidal self-injury stands out. Conclusion: non-suicidal self-injury is a multiple phenomenon, closely related to the environment, which deserves attention and care in the field of child and adolescent health. The issues present in the process of becoming an adolescent emerge as essential elements for understanding and coping with non-suicidal self-injury. Due to their multiple characteristics, coping and prevention policies should include several areas, such as health, education, and social assistance. The presence of mental health programs in schools is fundamental.

The literature on social action in the face of trauma, even while relatively sparse, indicates potential links between these domains of experience. Drawing on this literature, this article explores the meanings made by two mental health professionals who identify as being highly involved in social activism and who experienced past trauma that has significantly affected their lives. The personal narratives of these individuals were compiled from semistructured interviews that were selected for a qualitative thematic analysis. Meaningful recurrent themes indicated mutual influences of social action and trauma. Themes included (1) retraumatization and emotional pain associated with activism, (2) trauma and empathy, (3) healing and transformation through activism, (4) from powerlessness to action, (5) from alienation to validation, and (6) integration of parts of self. When applied within the psychoanalytic context of “witnessing,” data revealed three modes: (1) witnessing oneself, (2) communal witnessing, and (3) the language of activism as a witness. While excessive, overwhelming contact with trauma through activism may, in certain situations, engender risks of retraumatization and psychic stagnation, social activism may serve as a facilitator of intrapsychic movement and trauma transformation. Additionally, processing trauma through psychotherapy may contribute to an effective activism. Therefore, while trauma may involve devastating consequences, this article illustrates how people who experienced trauma may avert psychological states of helplessness and powerlessness, and processes and conditions by which individuals who endured trauma may develop a humane, compassionate view of self and others.
