Abstract Objective: to identify scientific evidence regarding the care of frail older adults in the community, from the perspective of the older adults themselves. Method: a descriptive, integrative review study was performed. The search for articles was carried out in the Medline, Lilacs, Web of Science, Scopus and SciELO databases. The inclusion criteria were complete available articles; published between 2014 and 2019; written in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French; which had older adults as participants. Results: four categories of analysis emerged from the results: frailty from the perspective of frail older adults; priorities from the perspective of the older adults; the older adults’ perspectives on care by services; and interpersonal relationships in the care of frail older adults. The perception of the older adults has specific characteristics, has maintaining their independence as a focus of care, signals the need to maintain interpersonal relationships, improve communication, and for actions of health education and people-centered services. Conclusion: these points demand the attention of care providers and policy services to improve care delivery and provide actions that are welcomed by this public.

Emotional care is an important part of the holistic labor and should be considered when providing care to people affected by perinatal losses. To synthesize the findings from recently published scientific evidence on the emotional care needed following perinatal loss, a search in PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and Web of Science was carried out in January 2020 yielding 22 studies which met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed following Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) methodology. One category on “offering emotional care” was identified: “Aspects influencing the psychosocial well-being of women after perinatal loss,” comprising eight themes: risk of complicated grief, cultural values, perinatal losses in multiple pregnancies, experience of subsequent pregnancies, need of information, contact with the deceased baby, impact on relatives, and strategies for emotional care. In conclusion, the evidence highlights the need of specific emotional grief care.

AbstractConcentrations of circulating adipokines in non-obese polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients had been reported in many researches, however, these results were conflicting. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess whether the levels of circulating adipokines were changed in non-obese PCOS. To identify eligible studies, literature research was performed in the database of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science without the restriction of region, publication or language. Of the total studies found, only 81 met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis showed that circulating levels of adiponectin [-0.95 (95% CI, −1.36 to −0.53)] decreased statistically in non-obese PCOS women. On the contrary, circulating levels of chemerin [1.13 (95% CI, 0.08 to 2.18)], leptin [0.47 (95% CI, 0.13 to 0.81)], resistin [0.45 (95% CI, 0.03 to 0.88)] and visfatin [1.38 (95% CI, 0.68 to 2.09)] increased significantly in non-obese PCOS females. Besides, there was no statistically significant change in the circulating levels of apelin [0.32 (95% CI, −1.34 to 1.99), irisin [1.01(95% CI, −0.68 to 2.70), omentin [-0.37(95% CI, −1.05 to 0.31)] and vaspin [0.09(95% CI, −0.14 to 0.32)] in non-obese PCOS patients. Scientific evidence suggested that the levels of circulating adipokines altered in non-obese PCOS patients compared with controls. Independent of the degree of obesity, the abnormal change of circulating adipokines levels might play an important role in the occurrence and development of PCOS.

Objective: To identify, in the national and international scientific literature, the evidence produced by Nursing that provides subsidies to prevent teenage pregnancy. Material and method: An integrative literature review study, based on papers available in the PubMed, BVS, Scopus and Web of Science metabases, and in the Lilacs and BDEnf databases, in Portuguese, English and Spanish languages, published from January 2013 to March 2020. Results: According to the inclusion criteria, 13 articles were selected. The findings are presented in the categories “lower socio-economic conditions”, “knowledge, attitudes and cultural aspects” and “sexual education and specialized services”. Conclusions: Teenage pregnancy is strongly associated with poverty and other socio-economic issues. Gender relations, communication about sex education in the family and other cultural aspects were found in the discussions, which indicates their impact on this phenomenon. Interventions involving sex education are shown as an alternative to cope. The presence of the nurse at the places that assist or concentrate adolescents can be a great element to reduce pregnancy rates in this phase.

Abstract. Scientific evidence on the importance of emotions in the educational context is growing and becoming more conclusive. These investigation has been carried out with the main objective of knowing the current state of Emotional Education in the area of Physical Education. A total of 21 articles published between 2015 and 2017 were selected according to the inclusion criteria of our objectives, after a systematic review of works in the Web of Science database. These articles were analysed and successively categorized to extrapolate results. These indicate that research in the field has focused more on students than on teachers; additionally, emotional education has been treated as a target rather than as a mean, or rather than studying its relation with other variables. Finally, future research lines and practical applications for teachers are suggested.

Abstract Background There is limited information on how the barriers to interprofessional collaboration (IPC) across various professionals, organizations, and care facilities influence the health and welfare of older adults. This study aimed to describe the status of IPC practices among health and social workers providing care for older adults in the Philippines; investigate the perceived barriers to its implementation and perceived effects on geriatric care; and identify possible solutions to address the barriers limiting collaborative practice. Methods A case study approach was utilized employing 12 semi-structured in-depth interviews and 29 focus group discussions with care workers from selected primary health care units, public and private hospitals, and nursing homes that are directly involved in geriatric care delivery in two cities in the Philippines. Overall, 174 health and social workers consented to participate in this study. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. An inductive thematic analysis using NVivo 12® was used to identify and categorize relevant thematic codes. Results Interprofessional geriatric care provided by health and social workers was observed to be currently limited to ad hoc communications typically addressing only administrative concerns. This limitation is imposed by a confluence of barriers such as personal values and beliefs, organizational resource constraints, and a silo system care culture which practitioners say negatively influences care delivery. This in turn results in inability of care providers to access adequate care information, as well as delays and renders inaccessible available care provided to vulnerable older adults. Uncoordinated care of older adults also led to reported inefficient duplication and overlap of interventions. Conclusion Geriatric care workers fear such barriers may aggravate the increasing unmet needs of older adults. In order to address these potential negative outcomes, establishing a clear and committed system of governance that includes IPC is perceived as necessary to install a cohesive service delivery mechanism and provide holistic care for older adults. Future studies are needed to measure the effects of identified barriers on the potential of IPC to facilitate an integrated health and social service delivery system for the improvement of quality of life of older adults in the Philippines.

One aspect that characterises the twenty-first century is its accomplishments such as better health-care systems, improved economies, a reduction in infant mortality and a growing number of adults living longer. However, these accomplishments can have a downside. For example, people are living longer while at the same time dementia rates are increasing significantly. With the increase in demand for high-dependency-related services, while at the same time costs are spiralling possibly out of control of societal budgets, there is a need for a shift in the care model. Additionally, difficulties in defining a clear dividing line between normal ageing and pathological ageing have led to a stigmatisation of older adults as a social and economic burden. This type of segregation and stigmatisation must be addressed to ensure future care delivery is inclusive. The positive benefits of an inclusive care system are both social and economic, and at an individual level it can positively impact upon an older adult’s mental and physical well-being. Taking this into consideration, the aim of this paper is to describe and empirically explore Humanitas© in Deventer, the Netherlands, a nursing home with a population of 50 older adults with dementia, 80 people with severe physical suffering, 20 people with social difficulties, 10 people in short stay for recovery and 6 university students. This analysis will be adopted as a ‘tool’ for the definition of a new way of conceiving architectural types in contemporary culture, based on the concept of an ‘open system’ described by Richard Sennett. In this study, an open system is able to promote a new paradigm of care built upon inclusive collaboration and teamwork between different categories of health-care providers, volunteers, residents and their families. This will allow an alternative paradigm of older adults’ long-term care and its architectural correlate to ‘normalise’ ageing and its related mental and physical impairments, rather than to ‘medicalise’ and stigmatise.

Objective: this work sought to inquire on the influence of sexuality on the health of the elderly during dementia. Materials and Methods: this was an integrative review. A careful search was conducted in nine databases; however, only five databases provided articles fulfilling the scope of the study: Medline, Lilacs, BDENF, Scopus, and Web of Science (WoS). The health science descriptors (DeCS) were adopted: “sexualidad”, “demencia” and “anciano”, and the descriptors cataloged in the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH): “sexuality”, “dementia” and “aged”. After applying the inclusion criteria, eight articles were selected to comprise the study sample. Results: the practice of sexuality influences upon the health of the elderly with dementia with some beneficial effects, given that it provides, especially, better perception of quality of life and wellbeing. Nevertheless, it cannot be generalized due to methodological insufficiency evidenced in the studies found to construct this review. Conclusions: due to the limitation of studies addressing the theme and the methodological insufficiency of those included in this review, it is necessary to conduct research that shows in depth the influence of sexuality on this population, given that it can be constituted as another approach for the promotion and protection of health in the elderly with dementia.

Abstract The increase in life expectancy and the percentage increase in the older population are related to the reduction in quality of life and social life due to the biopsychosocial changes inherent to the aging process. The present study aimed to verify scientific evidence on the relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms among older adults. An integrative review was carried out using the following databases: SCOPUS, PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL and PyscINFO, applying the descriptors indexed in the Mesh Terms and DeCS “aged”, “loneliness”, “depression”. The PICOS strategy was used to prepare the title and guiding question and the PRISMA methodological guidelines were used to write the report of this review. A total of 827 articles were identified, of which 23 were selected, 16 from the database and seven through a reverse search. Loneliness and depression have some characteristics in common, so that when one of these conditions develops in older adults, another is stimulated. Thus, loneliness is a major risk factor for the development of depression, just as depression is an aggravating factor for loneliness in older adults.
