OBJECTIVE: This research aimed at comparing the qualitative chemical compositions and the surface morphology of fracture regions of eight types of Nickel (Ni) Titanium (Ti) conventional wires, superelastic and heat-activated (GAC, TP, Ormco, Masel, Morelli and Unitek), to the wires with addition of copper (CuNiTi 27oC and 35oC, Ormco) after traction test. METHODS: The analyses were performed in a scanning electronic microscope (JEOL, model JSM-5800 LV) with EDS system of microanalysis (energy dispersive spectroscopy). RESULTS : The results showed that NiTi wires presented Ni and Ti as the main elements of the alloy with minimum differences in their composition. The CuNiTi wires, however, presented Ni and Ti with a significant percentage of copper (Cu). As for surface morphology, the wires that presented the lowest wire-surface roughness were the superelastic ones by Masel and Morelli, while those that presented the greatest wire-surface roughness were the CuNiTi 27oC and 35oC ones by Ormco, due to presence of microcavity formed as a result of pulling out some particles, possibly of NiTi. 4 The fracture surfaces presented characteristics of ductile fracture, with presence of microcavities. The superelastic wires by GAC and the CuNiTi 27oC and the heat-activated ones by Unitek presented the smallest microcavities and the lowest wire-surface roughness with regard to fracture, while the CuNiTi 35oC wires presented inadequate wire-surface roughness in the fracture region. CONCLUSION: CuNiTi 35oC wires did not present better morphologic characteristics in comparison to the other wires with regard to surfaces and fracture region.

To solve the problems of low processing efficiency and poor glass surface quality when using rare earth polishing powder to grind super-hard K9 glass. The potential, phase structure, surface morphology, and particle size distribution of the nano-rare earth polishing powder were characterized. Compare the evaluation indexes such as polishing efficiency, surface morphology, and contact angle after the polishing process is changed. The results of the comparative study show that the average surface roughness of the glass after heating ultrasonic polishing process is 0.9064 nm, the polishing rate reaches 0.748 μm/min, the average surface roughness of the glass without heating ultrasonic polishing process is 1.3175 nm, and the polishing rate reaches 0.586 μm/min, the ultrasonic assisted polishing process is superior to the conventional polishing process. The heating ultrasonic method provides experimental basis for precise and rapid processing.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate surface integrity of quenched steel 1045 ground drily by the brazed cubic boron nitride (CBN) grinding wheel and the black SiC wheel, respectively. Surface integrity, including surface roughness, sub-surface hardness, residual stresses and surface morphology, was investigated in detail, and the surface quality of samples ground by two grinding wheels was compared. Design/methodology/approach In the present work, surface integrity of quenched steel 1045 machined by the CBN grinding wheel and the SiC wheel was investigated systematically. All the specimens were machined with a single pass in the down-cutting mode of dry condition. Surface morphology of the ground specimen was observed by using OLYMPUS BX51M optical microscopy. Surface roughness of seven points was measured by using a surface roughness tester at a cut-off length of 1.8 mm and the measurement traces were perpendicular to the grinding direction. Sub-surface micro-hardness was measured by using HVS-1000 digital micro-hardness tester after the cross-section surface was polished. The residual stress was tested by using X-350A X-ray stress analyzer. Findings When the cut depth is increased from 0.01 to 0.07 mm, the steel surface machined by the CBN wheel remains clear grinding mark, lower roughness, higher micro-hardness and higher magnitude of compressive stress and fine microstructure, while the surface machined by the SiC grinding wheel becomes worse with increasing of cut depth. The value of micro-hardness decreases, and the surface roughness increases, and the surface compressive stress turns into tensile stress. Some micro-cracks and voids occur when the sample is processed by the SiC grinding wheel with cut depth 0.07 mm. Originality/value In this paper, the specimens of quenched steel 1045 were machined by the CBN grinding wheel and the SiC wheel with various cutting depths. The processing quality resulted from the CBN grinding wheel is better than that resulted from the SiC grinding wheel.

This paper investigates the effects of MQL system on the grinding performance of Ti-6Al-4V using SiC abrasive, the evaluation of the performance consisted of analyzing the grinding force, surface roughness and surface morphology. The experiment result indicated that the favorable lubricating effect of MQL oil makes it has the lowest value of grinding force, specific energy and force raito. MQL has better surface finish than dry grinding and fluid grinding has the lowest value of surface roughness under different grinding depth. Surface damages such as: side flow, plastic deformation, redeposition are present in dry and fluid grinding. As grinding depth increased, the damages become much more severe. But in MQL condition, it gives better surface integrity than dry and fluid grinding.

Abstract Cutter nomenclature and machining conditions has invoke critical impact on the machining behavior and surface integrity of machined samples. In this investigation, the slot milling operation has been performed under various cutter terminology or nomenclature (cutter with the RRA of −7°, 0° and 7°) and cutting conditions (spindle speed, table feed and MQL flow rate) to analyze its resulting outcome on the surface morphological features such as surface roughness (Sa), skewness (S sk ) and kurtosis (S ku ), etc Because the examination of these characteristics are important and significant to analyze the behavioral changes of asperities such as decohesion, wear resistance and adhesion, etc during in its relative motion. Additionally, the plasticity index and surface morphology of machined samples are helps to predict the variation in surface morphology under various machining behavior and through this study, it is found that the interactive effect of MQL flow rate and table feed offer higher and significant impact over the surface characteristics followed by the MQL flow rate during slot milling process.

To study the ageing characteristics of epoxy resin composite insulation in dry-type transformers in high-temperature environments, glass fibre-reinforced epoxy resin samples were placed in a hot air ageing environment at 130°C for testing. Dielectric properties, partial discharge (PD), microscopic morphology, three-dimensional morphology and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of aged samples were periodically tested. The results show that during the ageing process, the change in the surface morphology of the sample leads to an overall upward trend in surface roughness, and the older the sample, the faster the surface roughness increases; changes in the surface morphology and three-dimensional morphology of the material constitute the basis for judging the condition of the insulating surface and the state of ageing development. Microcracks are the direct cause of debonding of glass fibres and epoxy matrix. Degradation of the sample during the ageing process generates many free radicals, which enhances the polarisation ability of the sample and increases both the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor. The real part of the complex dielectric constant is more sensitive to the ageing response of the sample. The older the sample, the greater the effect on the results of the dielectric spectrum test. Since the aged sample generates more hot electrons during the PD process and makes it easier to inject electrons into the material, the PD of the sample is rendered more intense by thermal ageing. There is a significant difference between the degradation mechanism of the thermal ageing and PD. The samples subjected to PD after thermal ageing produce new groups, and the degradation of the samples is more severe than that caused by thermal ageing, or PD, alone.

This study investigated four commercially available NiTi orthodontic archwires from different manufactures for their grain structure and surface roughness.Four commercially available pre-formed NiTi orthodontic archwire (Ormco, Sentalloy, Highland and NIC) with diameter 0.016 x 0.022 inch2 were tested. The wire samples were polished and etched to evaluate the morphology and structure of wire surface. Each NiTi archwire was investigated under a reflected light microscope of an Optical Microscope to analyze its grain structure and size, in longitudinal surfaces. The surfaces of wire were qualitatively examined in the secondary electron mode at common magnification (500X). The surface roughness was also evaluated by a surface roughness tester. The descriptive statistic was evaluated the mean and standard deviation of surface roughness and Medcale T-Test was to test the mean difference of the surface roughness in each brands. This study showed an average grain size of 2-8 μm for each NiTi archwire. The wire surface of Ormco and Highland showed straiations along the longitudinal axes, however Sentalloy and NIC showed small pores on the wire surface. The surface roughness was 0.09 μm for Highland, 0.25 μm for Sentalloy, 0.28 μm for Ormco and 0.46 μm for NIC archwire. The Highland was smoothest and NIC was the roughest. There were in significant (p < 0.05) difference of surface roughness of each brands. The results showed that the four manufactures NiTi archwires were different in grain size, wire surface and surface roughness. During clinical application, these archwires may exhibit different mechanical properties, such as strength, hardness, ductity, and friction because of their microstructure.

ABSTRACTSingle wafer amorphous silicon deposition was characterized through process modeling and film characterization for application in semiconductor production. DOE methodology was used to determine the main deposition parameters, and the responses were limited to device production requirement properties of surface roughness, deposition rate and degree of crystallinity of the as-deposited film. The data trends and models show that deposition temperature and silane flow are the main factors. Increasing either or both factor increases the deposition rate and the surface roughness. The surface morphology, evaluated by AFM, SEM and TEM, was found to be rougher at extreme growth conditions than the poly crystalline film formed after anneal. The as-deposited surface morphology was not a result of pre-anneal crystal formations as determined by TEM cross sections of samples before and after anneal. Lack of crystalinity is important for impurity diffusion considerations. Device application of the single wafer a-Si process will be a compromise between growth rate (and associated throughput) and surface roughness that can be tolerated.

In this work, Ni films with the thickness of 50[Formula: see text]nm were deposited on (110) silicon substrate by electron beam evaporation at the temperature of 125[Formula: see text]C, 300[Formula: see text]C and 500[Formula: see text]C. Graphene was prepared on Ni films by PECVD to study the effect of Ni film structure and surface morphology on the graphene grown by PECVD. The result shows that the particle size and surface roughness of Ni film increase, as the temperature of substrate go up. The Ni film deposited at 125[Formula: see text]C exhibits amorphous state, and the Ni films deposited at 300[Formula: see text]C and 500[Formula: see text]C exhibit (111) microcrystal structure. The graphene grown on the microcrystalline Ni film deposited at 300[Formula: see text]C is the bilayer structure with less defects and uniform morphology. The graphene prepared on the microcrystalline Ni film deposited at 500[Formula: see text]C has more defects, layers and obvious plane undulation. The analysis indicates that microcrystalline Ni film deposited at 300[Formula: see text]C can be used by PECVD at low temperature to prepare a bilayer graphene with less defects and uniform morphology.
