Saguinus niger popularly known as Sauim, is a Brazilian North primate. Sympathetic chain investigation would support traumatic and/or cancer diagnosis which are little described in wild animals. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and distribution of sympathetic chain in order to supply knowledge for neurocomparative research. Three female young animals that came death by natural causes were investigated. Animals were fixed in formaldehyde 10% and dissected along the sympathetic chain in neck, thorax and abdomen. Cranial cervical ganglion was located at the level of carotid bifurcation, related to carotid internal artery. In neck basis the vagosympathetic trunk divides into the sympathetic trunk and the parasympathetic vagal nerve. Sympathetic trunk ran in dorsal position and originated the stellate ganglia, formed by the fusion of caudal cervical and first thoracic ganglia. Vagal trunk laid ventrally to heart and formed the cardiac plexus. In abdomen, on the right side, were found the celiac ganglion and cranial mesenteric ganglion; in the left side these ganglia were fusioned into the celiac-mesenteric ganglion displaced closely to the celiac artery. In both sides, the caudal mesenteric ganglion was located near to the caudal mesenteric artery.

The autonomic nervous system is a sophisticated and independent structure composed of two antagonistic (opposing) divisions (sympathetic and parasympathetic) that control many vital functions including: homeostasis maintenance, heart rate, blood circulation, secretion, etc. Thymus is one of the most important primary lymphoid organs playing a role in the developing of a juvenile’s immune system mainly by maturation, development, and migration of T-cells (T lymphocytes). In the last decades, several studies identifying sources of the thymic autonomic supply have been undertaken in humans and several laboratory rodents but not in higher mammals such as the pig. Therefore, in the present work, retrograde tracing technique of Fast Blue and DiI was used to investigate the sources of sympathetic efferent supply to the porcine thymus. After Fast Blue injection into the right lobe of the thymus, the presence of Fast Blue-positive neurons was found in the unilateral cranial cervical ganglion (82.8 ± 3.0% of total Fast Blue-positive neurons) as well as in the middle cervical ganglion (17.2 ± 3.0%). Injection of DiI resulted in the presence of retrograde tracer in neurons of the cranial cervical ganglion (80.4 ± 2.3% of total amount of DiI-labelled neurons), the middle cervical ganglion (18.4 ± 1.9%), and the cervicothoracic ganglion (1.2 ± 0.8%). The present report provides the first data describing in details the localization of primary efferent sympathetic neurons innervating the porcine thymus.

Oncocytic lipoadenoma (OL) is a rare salivary gland tumor characterized by the presence of oncocytic cells and mature adipose tissue. To date, only 30 cases of OL have been reported in the English-language literature. We present 3 additional OL cases involving the parotid, including a synchronous presentation with paraganglioma of the right carotid bifurcation. Microscopically, both the OLs were composed of a mixed population of oncocytes and adipocytes in varying proportions surrounded by a thin, connective tissue fibrous capsule. Oncocytes were positive for pan-cytokeratins (CKs) AE1/AE3, epithelial membrane antigen, CK5, CK7, CK14, CK18, and CK19. Calponin, p63, alpha-smooth muscle actin, and carcinoembryonic antigen were negative. Vimentin and S-100 protein were positive only in adipose cells. Despite distinctive morphologic features, OL is often misdiagnosed, given its rarity. We hope to contribute to surgeons’ and pathologists’ awareness and knowledge regarding the existence of this tumor and provide adequate management through conservative surgical excision.

Management of the symptomatic multiple stenosis of supra-aortic vessels (MSSVs) in a “bovine” aortic arch (BAA) configuration is infrequently reported. The optimal treatment choice remains debatable. A successful hybrid treatment for a proximal critical stenosis of the innominate and left common carotid artery was performed in a high-risk patient with a tandem symptomatic lesion in the right carotid bifurcation and a concentric vulnerable plaque in the bovine trunk. This case supports the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of a combined carotid bifurcation endarterectomy and retrograde kissing stenting of common carotid arteries with cerebral protection after evaluation of radiological, anatomical, and clinical parameters.

AbstractInflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) in the head and neck region are common, but those with sympathetic trunk involvement are extremely rare. Here we present a case of cervical sympathetic trunk-centered IMT which is also accompanied by ipsilateral carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve involvement. The patient initially complained of an episodic painful swelling on the right side of the neck and underwent surgery. Preoperative and postoperative serum IgG4 level during 3-year follow-up time is within normal limits. Immunohistochemical study of the tumor has also revealed negativity to IgG4. Postoperative first bite syndrome (FBS) was observed. Surgery seems to be first-line therapy in the patient with IgG4-negative IMT.

In 51 rats the distribution of the aortic depressor fibers which travel in the cervical region with the vagus, sympathetic, laryngeal, or as a separate aortic nerve was investigated by recording the action potential or by stimulating these nerves. A separate aortic depressor nerve was found in only 20% of the rats on the left side and in 5% on the right side. In these animals no depressor fibers were identified in the sympathetic trunk but the laryngeal nerves usually still exhibited depressor fiber activity. In those rats with no separate aortic depressor nerve the aortic fibers were present almost equally in the sympathetic trunk and laryngeal nerves, and on both sides of the neck. Only exceptionally was depressor activity found in the vagus trunk, and stimulation elicited depressor instead of pressor effects in 2 out of 12 rats. Optimal stimuli for obtaining hypotensive effects from the aortic depressor fibers were 80–150 per frequency and 1–2-msec duration.

Abstract Background Blunt celiac artery injury is extremely rare, but it is easy to ignore. The clinical manifestation of celiac artery injuries is usually atypical, so it is easy to fail to diagnose them. Case presentation: We report two cases of celiac artery occlusion after multiple trauma admitted, its mechanisms were motor vehicle collision and fall from height, respectively. The first patient was combined with severe liver injury, and the right hepatic arterial was embolized with coil assisted by the operation through the superior mesenteric artery. Both patients were managed with non-operation treatment, and no complications occurred during hospitalization. Conclusions For patients with celiac artery injury, conservative treatment is an important choice, but successful treatment still needs to be individualized based on the patient's condition.

The otolith digital catalogue AFORO allows unknown otoliths to be classified automatically by using a comparison with its classified records. To do this, the otolith’s contour, which is extracted from an image, is used. In AFORO, otolith images follow a strict positional normalization. Only the left sagitta is considered, and the images must show the internal side of the whole otolith, with the sulcus acusticus visible, the dorsal side (D) placed in the dorsal position and the rostral side (R) placed on the right. The otolith in the incoming image to be classified must also follow the same positional normalization. Variations from the reference position worsen the classification results. In this article, robust contour descriptors are proposed to extend this functionality of AFORO to the images of otoliths that are poorly normalized, contain rotations, are entirely inverted or came from the right rather than the left sagitta. These descriptors are based on the discrete Fourier transform and could extend the classification functionality to incoming images that are taken and sent, for instance, from smartphones in a wide range of working conditions.
