Litargus tetraspilotus LeConte, 1856 was collected feeding on Oidium sp. (Fungi, Ascomycota, Erysiphaceae) associated with fruit trees. This is the first time L. tetraspilotus is recorded in Brazil, totaling three species of Mycetophagidae for this country. This study aims to provide a complementary description of this species based on new characters and to present information on its life cycle under laboratory conditions and fluctuation in population in the field. During the period of inventories between July 2004 and August 2006, about every fifteen days, a total of 565 specimens of L. tetraspilotus were collected, with the highest abundance found on citrus plants, with values differing significantly between the two years. The population levels differed between the seasons; spring had the greatest abundance and autumn the least. There was a significant positive correlation of L. tetraspilotus abundance with rainfall and relative humidity. Mycetophagidae, as well as other mycophagous families of Brazilian coleopterans, are barely studied, warranting further future studies of their bioecology and systematics.

The study was conducted to know the reproductive performance of spiralling whitefly on guava. Number of colony, eggs, 1st instar, 2nd instar, 3rd instar and 4th instar nymphs per five leaves ranged from 6 to 15, 8 to 32, 0 to 44, 0 to 22, 0 to 45 and 0 to 28, respectively. Maximum number of adults and nymphs were found in the month of January. Highest longevity of Aleurodicus dispersus (21.5 days) was recorded in adult while the lowest was in 2nd instar nymph (6.4 days). The number of colony/leaf and number of 3rd and 4th instar nymphs of A. dispersus had significant positive correlation with minimum and maximum temperature while non-significant positive correlation is observed between the number of egg/colony, the number 1st and 2nd instar nymphs with minimum and maximum temperature. A. dispersus showed nonsignificant positive correlation with minimum and maximum relative humidity regarding number of colony/leaf, 2nd instar nymph while nonsignificant negative correlation with 4th instar nymph.SAARC J. The natural hosts of Amblyomma nodosum in the immature stages are a variety of birds and the anteater in the adult stage. However, so far no data have been published about this tick’s life cycle. To fill this gap, a record was made of its development under laboratory conditions. All the procedures were controlled in a BOD chamber set at 27±1 °C and 80±10% relative humidity and scotophase. The parasitic stages were raised on rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus Linnaeus, 1758), from which more than 50% of larvae and nymphs were recovered, although only a small portion performed ecdysis. The adults did not fixed on the rabbits, which suggests that the experimental conditions were unsuitable for the requirements of this species. The data obtained here indicate that A. nodosum is highly dependent on its host and environment whereas under laboratory conditions and host chosen for the study was not obtained satisfactory results and new studies with different hosts and new environmental conditions should be elaborated.

The nesting activity, life cycle, and brood ball morphometry of the dung beetle Oniticellus cinctus (Fabricius, 1775) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) were studied under laboratory conditions for the first time in India.  The females made a brood chamber within the dung mass provided, wherein they made brood balls to lay eggs.  The life cycle includes egg, larva (three instars), pupa, and adult stages.  The total duration for the development was about one month.  The study found that there was a significant difference present in the brood ball diameter (except in the first and second instars) and brood ball weight (except in the second instar and pupa) of the six life cycle stages.  It was also found that brood ball weight and diameter have a significant positive correlation as well as a linear relationship.

A field experiment was conducted for two years (2016-17 and 2017-18) at Entomological Research Area, Department of Entomology, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar to ascertain the influence of various meteorological parameters on population fluctuations of Helicoverpa armigera on tomato. The maximum oviposition (4.60 eggs/ plant) was recorded during 15th standard meteorologicalweek (SMW) whereas larval population was at peak (4.91 larvae/ plant) during 16th SMW. The larval population showed significant positive correlation with maximum temperature (r=0.617*) and highly significant negative correlation with morning (r=-0.784**) as well as evening relative humidity (r=-0.814**). Maximum eggs parasitization (12.85 %) by Trichogramma sp. was recorded during 16th SMW. These trichogrammatid parasitoids exhibited non-significant correlation with weather parameters and highly significant positive correlation (r=0.976**) with egg counts of H. armigera. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that 77 per cent (R2=0.77) variability in larval population was accounted by weather parameters particularly maximum temperature, morning and evening relative humidity.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) cannot form reproductive shoots during the first year of their life cycle. Flowering only occurs if plants are vernalised and are subsequently exposed to long days. However, the vernalisation mechanism remains poorly understood in sugar beet. Three putative lncRNAs associated with vernalisation (AGL15X1, AGL15X2 and CAULIFLOWER A) were investigated and the hypothesis that their expression occurred in response to vernalisation was experimentally tested. The regulation mechanisms of BvRAV1-like, lncRNA-like genes, BvFT1 and BvFT2 were also examined. The BvRAV1-like gene associated with vernalisation in sugar beet was validated for the first time. Our data confirmed the hypothesis that AGLX2 was the first candidate lncRNA of sugar beet and the BvRAV1-like gene was expressed in response to vernalisation. BvRAV1-like and AGLX2 genes might be coordinated with BvFT2 to promote reproductive growth by repressing BvFT1 during cold exposure followed by long day conditions. A new complementary flowering model of sugar beet was proposed. Our findings opened up new possibility for future studies and further illuminated the molecular mechanism of vernalisation in sugar beet.

AbstractFish larvae of ‘corvinas’ (Pachyurus bonariensis and Plagioscion ternetzi) from Sinhá Mariana Lagoon, Mato Grosso State, were collected from March 2000 to March 2004, in order to determine the parasitic fauna of fishes. Larvae from the two species were parasitized by the same endoparasites: Contracaecum sp. Type 2 (larvae) (Nematoda: Anisakidae) in the mesentery and Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) paraguayensis (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae) in the stomach and the terminal portion of the intestine. Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant positive correlation between the standard length of hosts and the abundance of acanthocephalans and nematodes, and that the prevalence of nematodes presented a significant positive correlation with the standard length of the two species of hosts, indicating the presence of a cumulative process of infection. The present study constitutes the first record of nematodes and acanthocephalans parasitizing larval fish, as well as the first record of endoparasites in fish larvae in Brazil. In addition, it lists a new locality and two species of hosts for Contracaecum sp. Type 2 (larva) and N. (N.) paraguayensis.

Abstract Crypticerya zeteki (Cockerell, 1914) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Monophlebidae) is recorded for the first time from Brazil and Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green, 1908) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae) is recorded for the first time from the state of Maranhão, Brazil. Both species were collected from branches, leaves and fruits of various fruit trees in the municipalities of São José de Ribamar, São Luís and Paço do Lumiar, Maranhão, Brazil. Crypticerya zeteki was collected on Citrus spp. (Rutaceae), Cocos nucifera (L.) (Arecaceae), Cycas revoluta L. (Cycadaceae), Malpighia punicifolia L. (Malpighiaceae), Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae), Musa paradisiaca L. (Musaceae) and Theobroma grandiflorum Schum (Malvaceae), all first records for this species. Maconellicoccus hirsutus was collected on Spondias tuberosa Arruda (Anacardiaceae) and M. punicifolia L. (Malpighiaceae), both new records for this species.

Experiments were conducted to investigate oviposition and host selection by Stenobracon deesae (Cam.), a Braconid parasite of certain Lepidoperous borers of sugar-cane, maize and sorghum in India. The fecundity and sex-ratio of this parasite and the duration of its life-cycle were also studied.Chilo zonellus (Swinh.) and Corcyra cephalonica (Staint.) were used as hosts. The former is one of the principal hosts in the field, but the latter is not normally a host of this parasite.The femal Stenobracon normally avoids laying eggs on hosts that are already parasitised by its own kind when unparasitised hosts are available; but in the absence of healthy hosts or when these are too crowded, parasitised hosts are attacked by it.At a temperature of 26°C. and relative humidity of 75 per cent., the life-cycle of the parasite was completed, on an average, in 23·3 days, but under laboratory conditions at Delhi it took 14·1 days in June-July and 43·7 days in November-December. The average duration of adult life of females in June-February, mainly in ordinary laboratory conditions, was 35·7 days, and single females lived as long as 122 and 128 days. The adult male lived for 42·7 days on the average.In the laboratory, the female lays about 24 eggs on an average, but only about one-third of them yield adults.Males predominate. The sex-ratio appears to vary according to the host; among adults reared on Chilo larvae, 28·8 per cent. were females, but among others reared on Corcyra larvae, only 6·2 per cent. were females.The phenomena of discrimination between parasitised and unparasitised hosts and of the change of sex-ratio with change of host are discussed. It is suggested that the ovipositor enables the parasite to recognise the host and that the stimuli received by the ovipositor from the host influence the functioning of the spermatheca which in turn controls fertilisation and finally the sex of the progeny.

Background: Chickpea, Cicer arietinum which is considered as a “King of pulses” get adversely affected by several biotic and abiotic stresses, out of which gram pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) is the major one. The damage caused by H. armigera starts from vegetative growth and continues till maturity of the crop. This pest is causes 25 to 70 per cent pod damage in chickpea but in favorable conditions pod damage goes upto 95 per cent. Methods: Present study was carried out during, rabi, 2014-15 and 2015-16 at Research Farm, College of Agriculture, Bikaner (Rajasthan). Correlation coefficient was worked out with weather parameters such as temperature (maximum and minimum), relative humidity (maximum and minimum), rainfall and sunshine hours. Multiple linear forms of regression model were also used to assess the effect of the weather parameters on the incidence of pod borer. Result: The studies revealed that peak larval population of gram pod borer was recorded in the second fortnight of February thereafter, population declined abruptly. The larval population of pod borer on chickpea occurred low at vegetative and flowering stages and high at pod formation as well as at grain developmental stages. The temperature (maximum and minimum) and sunshine hours had significant positive correlation with larval population during rabi, 2015-16. The maximum relative humidity showed significant negative correlation during rabi, 2015-16 whereas, minimum relative humidity showed significant negative correlation with larval population during both the seasons. The rainfall showed significant positive correlation during rabi, 2014-15.

The study was to assess the infestation of red pumpkin beetle, epilachna beetle and fruit fly on 12 germplasm of sweet gourd Cucurbita moschata. The study also investigated the effect of weather parameters on the abundance of the insects. Red pumpkin beetle, epilachna beetle and fruit fly showed the highest level of infestation during 3rd week of December, 3rd week of January and 4th week of February, respectively. All the insects revealed the lowest level of infestation on BD274 and BD277 germplasm. Relative humidity had insignificant positive correlation with all the insects. Red pumpkin beetle showed significant positive correlation with temperature. Epilachna beetle exerted significant positive correlation with rainfall. The weather parameters jointly contributed 35.2% abundance of red pumpkin beetle and temperature individually depicted the highest effect (18.9%). Rainfall revealed the highest contribution (44.4%) on the abundance of epilachna beetle and the combined effect of the weather parameters was 66.5%. Temperature, relative humidity and rainfall showed 43.2% contribution on fruit fly abundance and the individual effect of relative humidity was the highest (27.0%). Bangladesh J.
