The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the oral environment on the corrosion of dental alloys with different compositions, using electrochemical methods. The corrosion rates were obtained from the current-potential curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The effect of artificial saliva on the corrosion of dental alloys was dependent on alloy composition. Dissolution of the ions occurred in all tested dental alloys and the results were strongly dependent on the general alloy composition. Regarding the alloys containing nickel, the Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Ti alloys released 0.62 mg/L of Ni on average, while the Co-Cr dental alloy released ions between 0.01 and 0.03 mg/L of Co and Cr, respectively. The open-circuit potential stabilized at a higher level with lower deviation (standard deviation: Ni-Cr-6Ti = 32 mV/SCE and Co-Cr = 54 mV/SCE). The potenciodynamic curves of the dental alloys showed that the Ni-based dental alloy with >70 wt% of Ni had a similar curve and the Co-Cr dental alloy showed a low current density and hence a high resistance to corrosion compared with the Ni-based dental alloys. Some changes in microstructure were observed and this fact influenced the corrosion behavior for the alloys. The lower corrosion resistance also led to greater release of nickel ions to the medium. The quantity of Co ions released from the Co-Cr-Mo alloy was relatively small in the solutions. In addition, the quantity of Cr ions released into the artificial saliva from the Co-Cr alloy was lower than Cr release from the Ni-based dental alloys.

The electrochemical behavior of a three Ag-Pd alloys used in dental prosthetics construction for crowns and bridges was studied in artificial saliva using the polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The corrosion resistance was evaluated by means of the corrosion currents value and by coulometric analysis. The open circuit potential of Ag-Pd are attributed to dealloying followed by surface enrichment with Ag and the possible formation of an insoluble AgCl surface film on the respective alloy surfaces. Our results have shown that these alloys have a somewhat good corrosion resistance in artificial saliva. When increasing the content of Cu, corrosion resistance decreases. The passivation of all samples occurred spontaneously at the open circuit potential. The electrochemical properties of the spontaneously passivated electrodes at the open circuit potential were studied by EIS. The polarization resistance (Rp) and the electrode capacitance (Cdl) were determined. The polarisation resistance of all the samples increases with the immersion time. The polarization resistances are largest and decrease when increasing the content of Cu. Cu reduces the Ag-Pd alloy corrosion resistance. The present study, thought limited, has shown that electrochemical characteristics can be use to identify such alloys. Knowledge of the in vitro corrosion behaviour of these alloys may lead to better understanding of any biologically adverse effects in vitro.

Development of biocompatible dental implants has become significant impact in dental industry. In the present work, we report for the development of biocompatible nano Yttria stabilised Zirconia (YSZ) coatings on 316L stainless steel (316L SS) obtained by EPD process. The optimized sample (nano YSZ coating on 316 obtained at applied potential of 70 V for 5 minutes) were sintered in air at 600, 800 and 900°C. The surface morphology and composition of the coatings were characterized by XRD and FE-SEM with EDAX. The electrochemical performance of the uncoated metal and nano YSZ coated 316L SS samples were evaluated in artificial saliva (AS) medium using electrochemical techniques such as Open Circuit Potential – time measurement (OCP), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Cyclic Potentiodynamic Polarization (CPP).

This study aimed to compare the resistance of dental alloys to corrosion in a solution containing oral bacteria named Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans). The electrochemical behavior of Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) was investigated in sterile Fusayama artificial saliva (AS) with the enrichment medium tryptic soy broth (TSB) in solution 1 and (AS) with (TSB) and bacteria in solution 2. The electrochemical procedures selected for this work were open circuit potentials (OCP), Potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The NiTi surface was examined using optical microscopy.      After 24 hours of immersion in artificial saliva, the results have shown that NiTi revealed high corrosion reactivity in the presence of S. mutans and present pitting corrosion on the surface.

Calcium phosphate coatings are able to improve the osseointegration process due to their chemical composition, which is similar to that of bone tissues. In this work, to increase the long-term corrosion resistance and to improve the osseointegration process of commercially pure titanium Grade 4 (CpTi G4), biomimetic amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) coatings were electrodeposited for the first time from an acetate bath with a pH level of 7.0 and a Ca:P ratio of 1.67. ACP coatings were obtained on CpTi G4 substrate subjected to sandblasting and autoclaving using electrochemically assisted deposition at a potential of −3 V relative to the open circuit potential for 30 min at room temperature. SEM, EDS, 2D roughness profiles, amplitude-sensitive eddy current method, and Kelvin scanning probe were used for the surface characterization of the biomaterial under study. In vitro corrosion resistance tests were conducted for 21 days in artificial saliva using open circuit potential, polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The passive-transpassive behavior was revealed for the obtained ACP coatings. The long-term corrosion resistance test showed a deterioration of the protective properties for CpTi G4 uncoated and coated with ACP with immersion time. The mechanism and kinetics of the pitting corrosion on the CpTi G4|TiO2|ACP coating system are discussed in detail.

Porous Ti alloys are novel biomedical candidates for surgical implant application. The corrosion resistance of porous Ti-24Nb-4Zr alloy with 41.54% porosity prepared from conventional sintering was investigated by means of open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques in 0.9% NaCl physiological and Hank’s solutions with different pH values (2.4, 5.4, 7.4) at 310 K, respectively. Meaning solid Ti-24Nb-4Zr alloy was chosen as a reference. Porous Ti-24Nb-4Zr alloy shows wide passive regions based on anodic polarization curves. These observations suggest that porous Ti-24Nb-4Zr alloy owns excellent corrosion resistance. Therefore, they are potential for biomedical applications.

In the present work, ZrO2-based composites were prepared by adding different amounts of antibacterial magnesium oxide and bioactive and biocompatible hydroxyapatite (HAP) to the inert zirconia. The composites were synthesized by the conventional ceramic processing route and morpho-structurally analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Two metallic dental alloys (i.e., Ni–Cr and Co–Cr) coated with a chitosan (Chit) membrane containing the prepared composites were exposed to aerated artificial saliva solutions of different pHs (i.e., 4.3, 5, 6) and the corrosion resistances were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. The obtained results using the two investigated metallic dental alloys shown quasi-similar anticorrosive properties, having quasi-similar charge transfer resistance, when coated with different ZrO2-based composites. This behavior could be explained by the synergetic effect between the diffusion process through the Chit-composite layer and the roughness of the metallic electrode surface.

In this study, a waste of biorefinery—lignin—is investigated as an anticorrosion coating on stainless steel. Corrosion behavior of two lignin types (hardwood beech and softwood spruce) was studied by electrochemical measurements (linear sweep voltammetry, open circuit potential, potentiostatic polarization, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance measurements) during exposure to simulated body fluid (SBF) or phosphate buffer (PBS). Results from linear sweep voltammetry of lignin-coated samples, in particular, demonstrated a reduction in corrosion current density between 1 and 3 orders of magnitude cf. blank stainless steel. Furthermore, results from cross cut adhesion tests on lignin-coated samples demonstrated that the best possible adhesion (grade 0) of ISO 2409 standard was achieved for the investigated novel coatings. Such findings suggest that lignin materials could transform the field of organic coatings towards more sustainable alternatives by replacing non-renewable polymer coatings.

Ti-Mn alloy has a high specific strength, excellent cold workability and good biocompatibility. A cold rolled Ti-7 wt.% Mn was compared to annealed sample at 900°C for 10 min and the corrosion resistance property was tested in artificial saliva solution (AS). The Ti-7 wt.% Mn alloys (cold rolled and annealed) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and compared to pure Ti. Simultaneously, the alloys tested in the AS solution for up to 28 days mainly by following the open-circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), SEM and EDX. Annealed Ti-7wt.% Mn showed good corrosion properties similar to that of pure Ti, hence the new Ti-7wt.%Mn alloy have higher specific strength than pure Ti, yet showed same corrosion properties which favor implanted dental applications.

We present the preparation and inhibition behavior of rebar in the presence of calcium nitrate (CN)-containing microcapsules with concentrations of 0.50, 2.00, and 5.00 wt.% in concrete. From both open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy spectra, it was found that an addition of microcapsules containing CN corrosion inhibitor into concrete beams successfully repassivated or maintained the passivity of the rebar when the concrete was cracked. This corrosion inhibitor repassivated the rebar by forming a passive layer on the rebar surface under the crack. This repassivation process was evident by an increase of OCP values to more positive values or by stable OCP values at around -100 mV vs SCE. An increase in phase angle after corrosion activation for the sample with 2.00 wt.% microcapsule clearly showed this repassivation process. The optimum concentration for maintaining the passivity on rebar in the cracked concrete was found to be 5.00 wt.%.
