This work aims to evaluate treatments that may help improve speed and uniformity of germination in fruit tree species tarumã. Data were obtained from pyrenes (stones) of ripe fruits which in turn were picked from adult trees in the municipality of Vera Cruz do Oeste-PR. Treatments consisted of applying GA3 solutions at various concentrations (zero, 50 mg L-1, 100 mg L-1 or 200 mg L-1) to pyrenes via immersion for 47 hours, and thermoperiods of alternate 20ºC and 30ºC (8 hours at 20ºC in light conditions, and 16 hours at 30ºC in dark conditions) and constant 30ºC with the same photoperiod. The combination of alternate temperatures of 20ºC and 30ºC with a 200 mg L-1 GA3 solution resulted in an increase both in germination percentage, from 19.2% to 56.2%, and in the germination speed index, from 0.19 to 3.12, with resulting normal, uniform seedlings.

"Quina" (Strychnos pseudoquina A. St. Hil) is a medicinal plant species from the Brazilian Cerrado. As its seeds show dormancy, they were subjected to the treatments pre-cooling at 5ºC during 7 days, pre-heating at 40ºC during 7 days, pre-soaking in sulfuric acid PA during 5 and 15 min, pre-soaking in boiling water during 5 and 15 min, pre-soaking in 100 and 200 ppm gibberellic acid during 48 h, pre-soaking in distilled water during 24 and 48 h, and mechanical scarification to break dormancy. Counts were daily conducted from the 2nd day after the experiment implementation until the germination stabilization at the 65th day. The germination speed index (GSI) and the germination percentage were evaluated. Germination rates above 96% were reached in seeds pre-soaked in water during 48 h and substrate moistened with water or KNO3.

We investigated the morphological characteristics of Maesa japonica seeds and the optimal conditions for germination. The seeds were exalbuminous, and their length and width were 0.85 ± 0.09 mm and 0.77 ± 0.05 mm, respectively. We tested germination at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C; the optimum temperature for germination was 30°C (64% germination). To test the effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) and KNO3 on germination, the seeds were soaked in solutions containing 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 g GA3 L-1 or 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20 or 0.50 g KNO3 L-1 before sowing for germination. KNO3 treatment increased germination percentage and speed. Soaking in GA3 concentrations over 1.0 g L-1 stimulated 100% germination after 13 days. A presoaking treatment that combined 1.0 g GA3 L-1 and 0.2 g KNO3 L-1 promoted germination speed and shortened the time in which half of the seeds germinated. Overall, we determined that the best method for germination of Maesa japonica seeds was pre-soaking in 1.0 g GA3 L-1 and 0.2 g KNO3 L-1 at 4°C in the dark for 24 hours, followed by incubation at 25–30°C in a 16-hour light, 8-hour dark cycle for 10 days.

ABSTRACT The Solanum torvum species can grow in soils with a heavy load of nematodes and pathogenic fungi. It is currently much in demand in intensive agriculture as a rootstock of Solanaceae species, such as eggplant and tomato. This study aimed at comparing treatments, in order to determine the best method to accelerate the germination of S. torvum seed batches. Three seed batches were submitted to four treatments to overcome dormancy (water, potassium nitrate, gibberellic acid and pre-imbibition in gibberellic acid). The first germination count, germination percentage, germination speed index, mean germination time and mean germination speed were assessed. Treatments with gibberellic acid, with either pre-imbibition or only moistened substrate, exhibited the best germination speed index, mean germination time and mean germination speed. The final germination percentage showed a significant interaction between treatments and seed batches. Therefore, the treatments affect the final germination in a batch-dependent manner.

Sapindus saponaria, a brazilian tree species, known as soldier soap, is used in civil construction, landscaping, urban afforestation and reforestation. The objective of this study with this species was to identify the most efficient pre-germinative treatments for breaking the dormancy of its seeds. For this purpose, eight treatments plus the control were tested. The parameters used were the germination percentage and the germination speed index (IVG). As a result, based on the IVG, it was found that the best treatments were: hydrochloric acid, sandpaper and fire, not differing statistically from each other, the first two being superior to the control. For germination and IVG, acetone and hot water showed lower results than the control.

Abstract: Chitosan is a biopolymer obtained from deacetylation of chitin; it has multiple applications in agriculture as an antifungal, soil conditioner, inducer of defense mechanisms, fruits postharvest coating, leaves and seeds, among others. The objective in this research was to evaluate the effect of chitosan coatings mixed with fungicide (dithiocarbamate) on the germination and germination speed of bean and maize seeds in storage and to determine the retention capacity of the fungicide in the coated seeds under different times of imbibition. Two coating treatments at concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5% chitosan in water, two coatings treatments at 0.1 and 0.5% chitosan supplemented with 0.5% fungicide and a coating without chitosan using only 0.5% fungicide in water were used in bean and maize seed; and as control seeds imbibed in distilled water were used; after treatments, germination percentage and germination speed were determined, also fungicide release were determined at 0, 1, 2 and 6 h of imbibition, and the effect of storage time on germination and germination speed was determined at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days of storage at 4 °C and 45% relative humidity. The fungicide release effect was determined by inhibiting Fusarium oxysporum conidia germination. There were no negative effects of coatings on seed germination after storage. The treatment that provided both greater retention of the fungicidal agent and released it gradually, was 0.5% chitosan mixed with fungicide concentration. Chitosan coating seeds mixed with fungicide do not cause negative changes in seed germination or germination rate.

ABSTRACT The benefits of integrating agricultural components into silvopastoral systems are widely known, but the limited knowledge about ecological processes in the establishment phase impedes the use of this technology. The objective of this study was to evaluate interactions between fruit tree species and the sward layer under canopies of trees in the establishment phase of silvopastoral systems in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The experiment was implemented in October 2013, with an evaluation period from January to July 2015. The systems were composed of eight fruit trees intercropped with Tifton 85 grass. A completely randomized block design was adopted, with two replications per area per treatment. We evaluated the agronomic performance of the fruit trees, the categories of the light environment, and the plant accumulation under the canopies. The acerola fruit trees of the variety Roxinha had higher Leaf area index (LAI) and Light interception (LI) values, showing a denser canopy with small porosity and the lowest light quality available to the plants beneath the canopy (lower red/far-red ratio), thereby decreasing plant accumulation under trees. The guava fruit trees showed higher growth rates than the other fruit trees, but lower LAI and LI values and a higher red/far-red ratio, allowing higher plant growth under the canopy. Cajá trees showed a similar behavior; however, this species is deciduous, which limits its potential use in integrated systems. Banana and coconut trees were highly dependent on irrigation during the dry season. The remaining species showed an adequate growth and potential to control plant species growth under their canopies.

AbstractMammalian herbivores can play a role in the endozoochorous dispersal ofProsopisseeds in the arid zones of Argentina, and the introduction of exotic mammals can change relevant parameters of the plant's reproductive ecology. Our specific goals were to quantify the seeds ofProsopis flexuosa,P. chilensisandP. torquatacontained in the faeces of native [mara (Dolichotis patagonum), guanaco (Lama guanicoe)] and exotic [donkey (Equus asinus) and hare (Lepus europaeus)] mammals, and to determine the mortality, germination percentage and germination speed of seeds borne in faeces, compared with those collected from trees. In 2006, seeds were collected directly from trees or removed from mammal faeces. Seeds were counted and classified as apparently healthy or damaged.P. torquataandP. flexuosaseeds were found in the dung of guanaco, hare and mara, whereas onlyP. flexuosaseeds appeared in donkey faeces.P. chilensisseeds were only found in guanaco faeces. There was a notable relative abundance of seeds contained in small herbivore faeces in comparison to the large herbivores. The passage through the digestive tract of animals modified seed germination capacity and speed, with great variability between animal species. Guanacos had greater effects than donkeys on mortality, germination percentage and germination speed. Differences between the effects of both smaller-sized herbivores on seeds were much smaller.
