CONTEXT: The association between fibular dimelia and mirror polydactyly of the foot is considered to be a very rare lower-limb abnormality. On the other hand, VACTERL is an acronym for a nonrandom association of congenital anomalies for which the etiology is still poorly understood. CASE REPORT: The patient was a seven-month-old white girl whose mother had used misoprostol in the second month of pregnancy to induce abortion. On clinical evaluation, she was small for her age and presented hypotonia, anteverted nares, long philtrum and carp-like mouth. Her left hand had a reduction defect, with absence of the extremities of the second, third and fifth fingers and camptodactyly of the fourth finger. The ipsilateral lower limb presented significant shortening, especially rhizomelic shortening. Her left foot had a mirror configuration with seven toes and no identifiable hallux. The pelvis was hypoplastic. Esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula and imperforate anus were detected during the neonatal period. Abdominal ultrasound identified agenesis of the right kidney and left pyelocaliceal duplication. Radiographic evaluation on the left side showed iliac and femoral hypoplasia, absence of the tibia with a duplicated fibula and seven metatarsals and toes with no identifiable hallux on the foot. Echocardiography demonstrated an atrial septal defect. Based on the literature, we believe that the spectrum of malformations presented by our patient may be related to the vascular disruptive effect of the misoprostol. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that this association might simply be a coincidence.

ABSTRACTIdiopathic root resorption (IRR) is an infrequent condition that is usually found as an accidental finding on radiography. A significant number of cases of IRR in permanent dentition have been presented but are rarely reported in primary dentition. The aim of this case report is to present a case of localized IRR in a 7-year-old boy. The patient was referred because of increased mobility of the left mandibular primary second molar. On radiographic evaluation, severe root resorption of that tooth, and mild root resorption of the right mandibular primary second molar were evident; the patient was caries-free. The left affected tooth was lost, and after placing a band and loop space maintainer, the patient was followed for 18 months. A patient with an abnormal pattern of root resorption, especially in the primary dentition, should alert the clinician to rule out the known important local and systemic factors. The exact causes of and treatments for IRR continue to be discovered.

An ex-30-week gestation, preterm male baby was admitted to a tertiary neonatal unit and noted to have increased ventilator requirements and diagnosed with sepsis. The baby also developed an abscess over the left elbow and over the xiphisternum along with a decrease in movement of the left hand and the right leg. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing Staphylococcus aureus (SA) was isolated from the blood culture. A whole body MRI showed disseminated abscess with multiple foci in the lung, left elbow and over the xiphisternum. Disseminated sepsis with multiple septic foci has not been previously reported in neonates. We would like to highlight the fact that sepsis due to PVL toxin-producing SA can cause significant morbidity and mortality in neonates. Proper screening should be done to rule out septic foci in neonates. MRI is a good non-invasive investigation to document septic foci in a neonate and rule out multiorgan involvement.

Context: Congenital amyoplasia is characterized by contractures (arthrogryposis) involving multiple large joints. Case report: The patient is a couple’s first daughter and no history of similar cases in the family. She was born at term, by cesarean delivery, weighing 3080 grams and with Apgar scores of 8 and 9. Gestational ultrasound revealed fetal akinesia, oligodramnia, and altered fetal skeletal musculature with shortening of the four limbs. During delivery, she suffered a fracture of the right femur. The patient evolved with a delay in neuropsychomotor development. On physical examination, hypotonia, nevus flammeus on the forehead, contractures involving several joints (including fingers, elbows, hips, knees and feet) were observed as well as pits in elbows and knees. Computed tomography scan of the skull showed cortical hypoplasia. Radiographic evaluation showed levoconvex thoracolumbar scoliosis and congenital changes in vertebral bodies of the thoracic spine, and thinning bone structures of the upper limbs. In addition, there were dysplastic acetabular, signs of constriction or tissue band in distal third of the right and middle thighs of the left, intense muscular hypotrophy, thinning of diaphysis of the femurs and echinovirus feet. Abdominal ultrasound and karyotype were normal. Conclusions: The clinical findings were compatible with those of congenital amyoplasia. Fetal akinesia or hypokinesia is a finding widely reported by mothers of children with this condition, as occurred in our case. Therefore, early interventions are very important, in order to avoid, in particular, greatest atrophy of the affected limbs, in addition to osteopenia.

This paper introduces into the scholarship finger-rings and signet-rings discovered on the plateau of Eski-Kermen during the excavations in recent years. The twelfth- and thirteenth-century finger- and signet-rings uncovered in the churches in quarters I and II were modest bronze ornaments of featuring décor belonging to the group of Byzantine-circle artefacts. Adult women often wore a pair or a set of three pieces of the ornaments of the kind. The fourteenth-century hand ornaments comprise only signet-rings, partially attributable to the Byzantine circle and partially to the artefacts made by Seljuk artisans. Predominant were expensive ornaments of silver or gold. The difference between the assortment of ornaments from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and those from the fourteenth century can be explained not only by the change of fashion, but also by the different social status of those who lived in various districts of the provincial town. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, only the ordinary townspeople lived in quarters I and II, where only the bronze ornaments originate from. In the fourteenth century, the members of wealthy families were buried into slabbed graves located in the area in front of the basilica in the town centre, where silver and gold signet-rings were found. In the fourteenth century, signet-rings made a part of women’s and children’s attire. Young women, 18–20 and 19–25 years old, wore one signet-ring at once, on the fourth finger of the right hand; older women, 30–35 years old, decorated their left hand with a set of two signet-rings made in the same style. Young girls wore only one signet-ring on the third finger of the left hand. There were no signet-rings specially made for children: they got reshaped adults’ ornaments.

Abstract. The ratio of second to fourth finger length (2D:4D ratio) is sexually dimorphic with women having higher 2D:4D ratio than men. Recent studies on the relationship between 2D:4D ratio and gender-role orientation yielded rather inconsistent results. The present study examines the moderating influence of nationality on the relationship between 2D:4D ratio and gender-role orientation, as assessed with the Bem Sex-Role Inventory, as a possible explanation for these inconsistencies. Participants were 176 female and 171 male university students from Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden ranging in age from 19 to 32 years. Left-hand 2D:4D ratio was significantly lower in men than in women across all nationalities. Right-hand 2D:4D ratio differed only between Swedish males and females indicating that nationality might effectively moderate the sexual dimorphism of 2D:4D ratio. In none of the examined nationalities was a reliable relationship between 2D:4D ratio and gender-role orientation obtained. Thus, the assumption of nationality-related between-population differences does not seem to account for the inconsistent results on the relationship between 2D:4D ratio and gender-role orientation.

Spanish and English speakers tend to conceptualize time as running from left to right along a mental line. Previous research suggests that this representational strategy arises from the participants’ exposure to a left-to-right writing system. However, direct evidence supporting this assertion suffers from several limitations and relies only on the visual modality. This study subjected to a direct test the reading hypothesis using an auditory task. Participants from two groups (Spanish and Hebrew) differing in the directionality of their orthographic system had to discriminate temporal reference (past or future) of verbs and adverbs (referring to either past or future) auditorily presented to either the left or right ear by pressing a left or a right key. Spanish participants were faster responding to past words with the left hand and to future words with the right hand, whereas Hebrew participants showed the opposite pattern. Our results demonstrate that the left-right mapping of time is not restricted to the visual modality and that the direction of reading accounts for the preferred directionality of the mental time line. These results are discussed in the context of a possible mechanism underlying the effects of reading direction on highly abstract conceptual representations.

A 67-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of pain in his right buttock and lower limb. MRI depicted right L5/S1 lateral recess stenosis requiring surgical treatment; however, preoperative CT showed an approximately 7 cm long, thin, rod-shaped structure in the rectum, which was ultimately determined to be an accidentally ingested toothpick. It was removed surgically 6 days after diagnosis, because right leg pain worsened rapidly. The pain disappeared thereafter, and the symptoms have not recurred since. The pain might have been localised to the right buttock and posterior thigh in the early stages because the fine tip of the toothpick was positioned to the right of the anterior ramus of the S2 spinal nerve. Although sacral plexus disorder caused by a rectal foreign body is extremely rare, physicians should be mindful to avoid misdiagnosis.

The aims of this study were to develop and validate an instrument to quantitatively assess the handedness of basketballers in basketball tasks (Basketball Handedness Inventory, BaHI) and to compare it with their handedness in daily activities by the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI). The participants were 111 basketballers and 40 controls. All subjects completed the EHI and only basketballers filled in the BaHI. To validate the BaHI, a voluntary subsample of basketballers repeated the BaHI. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a two-factor model. Our results show that: (i) Handedness score (R) in daily actions did not differ between basketball players (R by EHI = 69.3 ± 44.6) and the control group (R by EHI = 64.5 ± 58.6); (ii) basketballers more frequently favored performing certain sport tasks with the left hand or mixed hands (as highlighted by R by BaHI = 50.1 ± 47.1), although their choice was primarily the right hand in everyday gestures; and (iii) this preference was especially true for athletes at the highest levels of performance (R by BaHI of A1 league = 38.6 ± 58.3) and for those playing in selected roles (point guard’s R = 29.4 ± 67.4). Our findings suggest that professional training induces handedness changes in basketball tasks. The BaHI provides a valid and reliable measure of the skilled hand in basketball. This will allow coaches to assess mastery of the ball according to the hand used by the athlete in the different tasks and roles.

Abstract Objectives To determine which digit and hand have the highest and lowest skin carotenoid scores, to compare inter-and-intra-hand variability of digits, and to determine if results are consistent with another subject. Methods Two subjects’ first(F1), second(F2), third(F3) and fifth(F5) digits on both hands were measured for skin carotenoids with a Veggie Meter, for 3 times on each of 18 days over a 37-day period. Data were subjected to ANOVA in a factorial treatment design to determine main effects for hand (2 levels), digits (4), and days (18) along with interactions. Differences between digits were determined by Tukey's post hoc test. Results There were significant hand x digit, hand x day, digit x day, and hand x digit x day interactions and significant simple main effects for hand, digit, and day (all P < 0.001). Mean square errors were 143.67 and 195.62 for subject A and B, respectively, which were smaller than mean squares for all main effects and interactions. The mean scores ± SD for F1, F2, F3, and F5 digits for the right vs left hands for subject A were F1:357.13 ± 45.97 vs 363.74 ± 46.94, F2:403.17 ± 44.77 vs. 353.20 ± 44.13, F3:406.76 ± 43.10 vs. 357.11 ± 45.13, and F5:374.95 ± 53.00 vs. 377.90 ± 47.38. For subject B, the mean scores ± SD for digits for the right vs left hands were F1:294.72 ± 61.63 vs 280.71 ± 52.48, F2:285.85 ± 66.92 vs 252.67 ± 67.56, F3:268.56 ± 57.03 vs 283.22 ± 45.87, and F5:288.18 ± 34.46 vs 307.54 ± 40.04. The digits on the right hand of both subjects had higher carotenoid scores than those on the left hands, even though subjects had different dominant hands. Subject A had higher skin carotenoid scores on the F3 and F2 digits for the right hand and F5 on the left hand. Subject B had higher skin carotenoid scores on F5 (right) and F1 (left) digits. Conclusions The variability due to hand, digit, and day were all greater than that of the 3 replicates within the digit-day for both volunteers. This indicates that data were not completely random across the readings when remeasuring the same finger. Different fingers displayed higher carotenoid scores for each volunteer. There is a need to conduct a larger study with more subjects and a range of skin tones to determine whether the reliability of measurements among digits of both hands is similar across the population.
