The definition of the novel's frame has been familiar to literary researchers since the appearance structural theory. They are defined by the compositional norm or form of expression or the boundaries in which the plot is located. In all these approaches, the frame is only a reference point for artistic expression. At the same time, since the 1970s, there has been a clear turn towards autothematicism in literature, accompanied by a postmodern type of narrative, focusing on this context. The narrative itself and the narrator's self-awareness play a kind of game with the reader. From the theoretical point of view, it is the frame on which the recipient focuses. On the example of Łukasz Orbitowski's book Cult, the article shows this mechanism of shifting attention to the frame of expression.

The purpose of this study is the analysis of limit situation in the narrative of war. The material of the study is the novel of Daniil Granin “My Lieutenant” and related texts. In the first part of the paper, the authors explore existing approaches to the term “limit situation” and similar concepts into scientific and philosophical traditions; limits of its applicability in literary studies and its relation to the categories of “narrative instances” and “event”. Proposed a literary-theoretical definition of the limit situation, which can be used in the analysis of fiction texts. Existing approaches to the examination of the situation of war are analyzed: philosophical-existential, psychoanalytic, sociological, literary. In the second part of the paper, the authors propose their method for analyzing limit situations in texts about war, which basis on existing approaches and preserves the text-centric principle of studying the structure of the story. Two interrelated areas of research have been identified: the study of war as a continuous limit situation in the intertextual aspect (the discourse of war); the study of limit situations (death, suffering, guilt, accident) in the narrative of war as part of a specific text. In the third part of the scientific work, the analysis of war as a continuous limit situation results in the study of the concept of “limit” (border) in a fiction text. The role of “limit” (border) concept in the texts about the war is studied, the possible types of limits in the discourse of war are examined. Limit situations in the narrative of war are analyzed on the basis of the novel “My Lieutenant” by Daniil Granin. A review of journalistic and scientific works about the novel revealed both the continuity and the differences between the novel and the “lieutenant” prose of the 20th century. An analysis of the limit situations in the novel revealed their key position in the narrative. These situations are independent of the fiction time, of the fluctuation of the point of view’; the function of the abstract author is to build the narrative as a “directive” immersion of the hero and narrator in these situations.

A height definition in terms of geopotential numbers offers a variety of advantages. Moreover, from the theoretical point of view, such a definition is considered more fundamental.

We know, however, that relativistic gravity (here General Relativity) requires to reformulate the basic geodetic notions and to develop a consistent theoretical framework, relativistic geodesy, to yield an undoubtedly correct interpretation of measurement results.

The new framework of chronometric geodesy that builds on the comparison of clocks offers fundamental insight into the spacetime geometry if a solid theoretical formulation of observables is underlying modern high-precision measurements. Here we approach a genuine relativistic definition of the concept of height. Based on the relativistic generalization of geopotential numbers, a definition of chronometric height is suggested, which reduces to the well-known notions in the weak-field limit.

The article explores the ancient notion of ekphrasis in an attempt to redefine it and to adjust it to the requirements of the contemporary literary and artistic landscape. An overview of the transformations in the world of art in the 20th century allows us to adjust our understanding of what art is today and to examine its existence within the literary context. In light of the above, I postulate a broadening of the definition of ekphrasis so as to include not only painting and sculpture on the one side, and poetry on the other, but also to open it up to less conventional forms of artistic expression, and allow for its use in reference to prose. In order to illustrate its relevance to the novel, I have conducted a study of three contemporary novels – John Banville’s Athena, Kurt Vonnegut’s Bluebeard and Don DeLillo’s Mao II – in order to uncover the innovative ways in which novelists nowadays use ekphrasis to reinvigorate long prose.

Aircraft noise is nowadays considered a pollutant like exhaust gases. Moreover, future requirements for aircraft certification impose a remarkable reduction in noise emission in the next 20 years. Since current technologies are insufficient to achieve the target, new technologies have to be developed, both for engines and airframes. In this paper, three novel engine cycles have been studied from a preliminary and theoretical point of view, considering noise and fuel consumption reduction as key design drivers. The innovative cycles analysed are: Variable Fan Nozzle Area (VFNA), Constant Volume Combustor (CVC) and Inter Cooled Recuperated (ICR). A parametric analysis has been performed for each one of them in order to select the best cycle; then, the three optimums have been compared. The designed VFNA engine provides the largest reduction in jet noise (64%) in comparison to the baseline, whilst the CVC has the lowest fuel consumption. However, both use two fans per engine, with weight and drag penalties. A further noise reduction is obtained installing the engines upon the wings, and not beneath them as in conventional designs. Obtained results show that noise shielding technique is responsible for a 20 dB decrease in OASPL, leading to a noise level, perceived on the ground, lower than 60 dB. This value implies a full satisfaction of the new environmental laws. Finally, the three propulsion systems have been installed on a medium range, twin engine aircraft and its flight performance has been evaluated. Simulations establish the superiority of the novel cycles against the baseline, in terms of reduced fuel consumption for the given mission.

Ivan Petrović (1973) has been working in the fields of photography and art for twenty years as a researcher, creator and collector. Since 1997, he has been creating and publishing photographic projects that reflect the spirit of space and time in which they are created, while in his works he uses both documentary approaches as well as research principles. In 2011, together with photographer Mihail Vasiljević, he founded a para-institution, the Centre for Photography (CEF). Despite lacking its own premises, infrastructure or funds for performing its activities, the institution deals with the search, preservation, collection and analysis of local photographic materials from recent history. In the past ten years, Petrović also moved his artistic practice beyond mere artistic expression, since he addresses the phenomena of photography from an analytical-theoretical point of view. His interest lies in the nature of the photographic image and its role in society and historiography. In this spirit, long-term projects such as Documents (1997–2008), Images (2002–), Portfolio Belgrade (2015–) and the latest film production were created. The interview with Ivan Petrović took place on 1 September 2017 in Belgrade. The main themes were the role of photography in the dominant history, the boundary between one’s own practice and archival work, photography as an art and the likes. Keywords: collection, documentary, photography's role, preservation, research

Many scholars feel, like the legal philosopher Joelberg, that "punishment from a theoretical point of view is something mysterious, and from a moral point of view - disturbing" . The mystery and disturbing ambiguity of the punishment makes the formulation of its definition, and the definition of a criminal punishment in particular, which would be satisfactory, an extremely difficult task. A way out of an embarrassing situation of defining a criminal punishment is to indicate the most important circumstances and conditions that must be met in order for some social action to be called a punishment. This involves an exhaustive and comprehensive indication of the components ("constituent elements of punishment"), and at the same time a sharp cut-off of all other types of activities The question about constituent elements that give particular teams behaviour, carried out by authorized persons, the character of a criminal punishment does not concern the description of patterns of such a behaviour and their fulfilment, such as the action related to the enforcement of the obligation to pay a certain amount, physical deprivation of liberty or fulfilment of the obligation to work. It is important, however, to define the conditions in which the legal formulas of such behavior and the specific actions taken on their basis and the situations resulting from them can be described as a criminal punishment.

Fretting damage, also known as small-amplitude oscillatory sliding motion, can lead to catastrophic failure in many industrial applications. An understanding of fretting fatigue and its reproduction in laboratory tests have enabled an evaluation to be made of the fretting resistance of homogeneous substrate. To reduce the damage caused by fretting fatigue, increasing use has been made of coatings or treatments that result in inhomogeneous solids. From a theoretical point of view, ascertaining the mechanical behaviour of materials so modified is quite complex due to insufficient definition of the contact parameters. This present study seeks to analyse a layered medium undergoing fretting fatigue in a cryotechnical environment and the improvement in its fretting fatigue resistance. The first step of the analysis of a layered alloy is the determination of the new contact parameters in elasticity, and the second is the characterization of the elastic-plastic coefficients of the strain-hardening law. An evaluation of the lifetime before crack initiation will close the analysis.

So far, the science of penal law has not looked closely into the term “doctrine”, and, in particular, “penal and legal doctrine” from the theoretical point of view. Thus we find it necessary to eliminate this gap, since the use of these terms and their synonyms varies greatly in the scientific and educational activities of penal institutions. Understanding the doctrinal grounds is also important for assessing the current situation and prospects for development of the science of penal law. The article analyzes the usage of the terms “penal and legal doctrine”, “criminal-executive doctrine” “doctrine of criminal-executive law”, “penal doctrine”, “correctional doctrine”; penal and legal doctrine is considered as part of legal doctrine; we study the notion of “legal doctrine” in its relations with adjacent categories (science, concept, position); we also investigate the effects of penal and legal doctrine on the penal and legal policy. We conclude that the term “penal and legal doctrine” is the core one and acts as a necessary prerequisite for scientific analysis. We also provide recommendations for the use of the term “doctrine” in the penal law sphere and put forward our own definition of the term “penal and legal doctrine”. In the course of our research we used general scientific, sectoral (social narrative) and level methodology (methods of theoretical and metatheoretical levels of cognition in science).

The transition from pre-human to human has, for a long time, been associated with tool use and construction. The implicit self-definition of humans in this is that of planned control over life world. This is reflected on in the work of Hanna Arendt on the homo faber and the novel by Max Frisch of that name. However, this definition has become problematic in a number of ways: Planned tool use has been seen to occur outside the human species, and the focus on control of the environment has become suspect because of the environmental crisis. The burial practices of Homo naledi indicate high-level self-awareness and social communication, with little tool use being evident. This article asks whether this might be an occasion to redefine our conception of what it means to be human away from the focus on mastery and control and towards including trust, also religious trust, as the true mark of humanity.

AbstractDichotomies in various conjectures from algebraic geometry are in fact occurrences of the dichotomy among Zariski structures. This is what Hrushovski showed and which enabled him to solve, positively, the geometric Mordell–Lang conjecture in positive characteristic. Are we able now to avoid this use of Zariski structures? Pillay and Ziegler have given a direct proof that works for semi-abelian varieties they called ‘very thin’, which include the ordinary abelian varieties. But it does not apply in all generality: we describe here an abelian variety which is not very thin. More generally, we consider from a model-theoretical point of view several questions about the fields of definition of semi-abelian varieties.
